A monstah!
Avatar 5:44pm glenn:

never heard of him, but then, i've never heard of half the jazz types that i hear here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Doug Schulkind:

I believe it's spelled as a single word, glenn: "jazztypes"
Avatar 5:47pm glenn:

oh. sawwy.
Avatar 5:51pm glenn:

so, is it jazzcigarettes, then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Evening Doug and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi Artie, ho davex!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Don is still playing and teaching regularly. He turned 79 this past May.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Doug Schulkind:

I should devote an hour to the artistry of Attila Zoller. Jazz guitar has always been a tougher nut for me to crack, but I am nuts for Zoller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Doug Schulkind:

This LP is one of two Don Friedman recorded with trumpeter Booker Little. Both are sublime and superb. They are supbliermb.
Avatar 6:10pm glenn:

that's so not a word.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Doug Schulkind:

For some reason, I had been under the impression that this song was written for Martin Luther King, Jr. But it wasn't. Apparently, it was written for jazz critique Nat Hentoff. Oh well!
  6:12pm Dean:

Thought I recognized AZ. Gonna go home and listen to a disk on hatology w/ Friedman and Lee Konitz.

Jimmy Ponder. There's a jazz guitarist worth some time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
I've got that Hat Hut ready to go in Set #3.
Avatar 6:14pm Holly in NC:

Hello, Doug & everyone!
  6:14pm Dean:

Then I'll just have to hear it twice.
Avatar 6:14pm ndbob:

heya Holly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Hallo Holly in NC!
  6:15pm Dean:

Picked up this one, Flashback, during the waning years of Tower Records, when they discounted most of their Fantasy/Riverside/etc. reissues on vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Those days of Tower cut-outs were blessed days. I must've purchased 1000 Foikways records alone at the Tower outlet on West 4th St in Manhattan.
Avatar 6:20pm glenn:

jeeez. how many records do you own, drummah?
  6:20pm Dean:

I covered the Southern California stores. Picked up the complete Riverside Bill Evans box for a fraction of the list.
Avatar 6:24pm ndbob:

wow Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Entirely not enough, glenn. Never ever ever enough.
Avatar 6:26pm glenn:

yeah, i have lots of clamps.
Avatar 6:26pm Holly in NC:

Guys! Check out this amazing Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar (real name) !
Found him in Chapel Hill last week..

Avatar 6:26pm glenn:

or cramps, as the british call them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Doug Schulkind:

Full disclosure: Some of the Folkways records I bought at that Tower annex, I bought multiple copies of. This was when they were getting rid of them for 25¢ apiece. I bought 50 copies each of several great Folkways LPs. The Ghetto Reality record, for one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Nice one, Holly! I can deal with thems kinds of insects. Just not the "other" kind.
Avatar 6:28pm glenn:

that's a funky caterpillar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Doug Schulkind:

Friedman's touch is both "light" and pounding at the same time. Not easy to pull off.
  6:29pm Dean:

That thing's got as many feet as Doug has records!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Doug Schulkind:

Better known as the euphonium player on several recordings with John Coltrane, the bass player here is Julian Euell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Yikes, I misclicked my mouse and cutoff the first 30 seconds of the song. SORRY DON!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of Julian Euell, he got his Ph.D. in 1973. He was Assistant Secretary for Public Service at the Smithsonian from 1970-1982, and was partly responsible for the institution's increasing interest in jazz history.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm listener james from westwood:

Wholly entertaining so far; glad to be here with dinner and eardrums!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Better than dinner and doldrums!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Doug Schulkind:

Coming up next is a track from maybe my fave Don Friedman record, Metamorphosis. It is the LP that features on its cover the image adorning today's playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Doug Schulkind:

More Attila Zoller here (and on the next track, too). Also drummer Joe Chambers is playing here. The gents are playing a Jimmy Giuffre composition.
Avatar 6:53pm ndbob:

scrolling back... what a caterpillar Holly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Why, it's a caterpillar of the community.
Avatar 6:55pm northguineahills:

This was tastey, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Doug Schulkind:

Don is playing solo on this cut from a trio record. Actually.
Avatar 6:55pm Holly in NC:

@ndbob - Next year he will turn into a Regal Moth, largest moth in NC, & also stunning!
Avatar 6:57pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Doug Schulkind:

There's gold in them there northguineahills!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:58pm listener james from westwood:

@Holly: Holy jeepers, what a caterpillar! 'Round here it's mostly tent and gypsy moth caterpillars, plus those little green loopy ones. That one is indeed regal!
Avatar 6:58pm Holly in NC:

Thank you, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Don Friedman is still going strong. Long live Don Friedman!
