I do hope you play a track from the Victo show a few years ago. He had trouble at the border into Canada, so John Oswald and Paul Plimley, on a moment's notice, opened the show in lieu of Marilyn Crispell, who was set to close it. But Taylor showed up and did a full set. What a night.

Hi Jeffs, Doug and all and sundry.

Speaking of R.I.P., my wife lost her mom this past Saturday night. Natural causes, as they say, at 97. She was a pretty damn good mother-in-law. The only one who laughed unreservedly at all my jokes. The world is now and forever a much tougher room.
Avatar Mon. 8/18/14 12:17pm glenn:

my condolences to you and mrs. drummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/18/14 12:18pm Jeff Golick:

Ugh, so sorry to hear, Doug. Hugs to you and fam.
  Mon. 8/18/14 12:18pm Jeff J:

Hey all - thanks for dropping by!

Doug - So sorry to hear about your mother-in-law.
Avatar Mon. 8/18/14 12:20pm Jeff J:

Dean - Has that Victo show been officially released? If so, it's one that slipped past us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/18/14 12:21pm Jeff Golick:

On this Unit Structures cut, reeds are Jimmy Lyons and Ken McIntyre.
Avatar Mon. 8/18/14 12:23pm northguineahills:

darn, sorry for your loss, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/18/14 12:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, mates. No surprises on this end. The boulder was rolling apace down the mountain and there was no Sisyphus in sight. OK that was weird. Please tell me my dearest didn't just see me refer to her mother as a boulder.

  Mon. 8/18/14 12:25pm Dean:

Doug - Condolences to you and your wife, and bravo to a woman who hiked the trail beyond 95 years! Remarkable, but sad.

Jeff J - Yes, it's on the Victo label, three disks: http://jazztimes.com/articles/12910-complicite-paul-plimley-john-oswald-marilyn-crispell-cecil-taylor
  Mon. 8/18/14 12:31pm Dean:

And, lord, that was way back in 2000, not just "a few years ago"! I would stay in Victo at the B&B (just a house, really, with an extra bedroom) of a retired nurse who spoke zero English. My buddies and I bought her a ticket to the Taylor show. She knew Victo's festival through the newspaper accounts, but had never been to a show. She genuinely enjoyed the entire long show.
Avatar 🎃 Mon. 8/18/14 12:42pm duke:

Unit Structure, makeout music?
Avatar Mon. 8/18/14 1:00pm Jeff J:

@Duke - I'm thinking Nefertiti is the real get busy slow jam.
Avatar Mon. 8/18/14 1:01pm Jeff J:

Dean - I hear you how time flies! I've taken my dad to several Cecil shows - his idea of jazz is McCoy Tyner - and he loved them. Bowled over the energy and mastery that's unmistakble in a live context.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/18/14 1:07pm Carmichael:

Good morning to Jeffs and others.

That Sisyphus job is no work for a grown up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/18/14 1:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, B in UK. Jessie's mom was here in Pittsburgh, so we were able to spend much time with her.

Derek Bailey on funk guitar here...
  Mon. 8/18/14 1:18pm Dean:

Re: that Cecil Taylor/Gigi Grice record, I recently stumbled across a sampler of piano music on a label, Private Music, featuring solo performances by Eddie Jobson, Joachim Kuhn, etc. It looked/smelled distinctively New Age-y, so I didn't buy it. But Buell Neidlilnger produced at least one of the tracks.
  Mon. 8/18/14 1:20pm Dean:

Yow. No idea J-J A had passed on! What a joy it was watching him perform.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/18/14 1:21pm Jeff Golick:

Sadly never say him play live, Dean. Have heard similar from other commentors, though.

Just back to the computer and terribly saddened to learn of your loss, Doug. Good to hear you and the family were able to see her so often. As expected as it may have been, you and Jessie have my sympathies. And I wish I'd had my grandparents until they were 97 as Lincoln did with her!! What a window into another world she must have been for her. Good thoughts to all of her family in the days ahead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/18/14 1:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, James. Thanks.

The great Sam Woodyard is playing drums on this Ellington/Strayhorn tune. (Joining Oliver Johnson, also on drums.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/18/14 1:38pm Jeff Golick:

Woodyard would pass away about two months after this session.

I heard another track from Pharoah & the Underground last week, and it's very nice.
Avatar Mon. 8/18/14 2:07pm northguineahills:

ahhh, I still have the vinyl (and the box set version) of Four Violins.
Mon. 8/18/14 2:07pm John in England:

Just when I thought nothing in the Kenny Wheeler discography could surprise me, I came across him playing with Joe Harriott in 1969 (part of a compilation CD called Trad Dads, Dirty Boppers and Free Fusioneers -- details on the forcedexposure website).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/18/14 2:10pm Jeff Golick:

John: that's the soundtrack to the book of the same name, yah? I recall Doug playing something from that a while back.
Mon. 8/18/14 2:14pm John in England:

Loosely linked to the book, but independently produced and distributed. Looking it up before commenting, I discovered that Reel Recordings might have bitten the dust, which is a great shame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/18/14 2:17pm Carmichael:

Doug played some Joe Harriott just last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/18/14 2:17pm Jeff Golick:

Yes, it's true that Reel has thrown in the towel. I think that comp was their last project. Doug would know more...
Avatar Mon. 8/18/14 2:28pm northguineahills:

I never get tired of early Tony Conrad.
Mon. 8/18/14 2:33pm John in England:

Re. J-J Avenel, there is is a Steve Lacy DVD (Lift The Bandstand) where you can see him playing the bass at a really strange angle, which must explain why he could be a very 'clicky' player. Mal Waldron's last recording (I think) was a trio with Steve Lacy and J-J Avenel -- One More Time.
Avatar Mon. 8/18/14 2:41pm northguineahills:

Off for eatings, thanks Jeffs! Thorough enjoyed this one!
