"The Killing" is basically a Warner Brothers-style B-movie noir, there's nothing unusual or innovative in the story or even the dialog. Yet...it is filled with little Kubrickian tweaks that transform the material in his unmistakable way.

@P-90: So what handful of SF films from the 50s-60s do you think make the A-list (to cont. an old discussion)? Philo and I disagree about the original "The Fly," which I find not so much a B film, and he's on the fence about it.

Philo Gristle:

FLY is great and love it, but somehow seems a bit B-grade when compared to Forbidden Planet, Day the Earth Stood Still et al. Never saw Night of the Demon, oddly enough. Lon Chaney Jr. in Witch Woman kinda fits the earlier discussed bill alongside I Married a Witch.

P-90:

Hi @kat & @Philo: I love The Fly, I have always loved it, seen it dozens of times, including a couple of theatrical screenings at revival houses etc. It's an extraordinarily well-structured, well written story (screenplay by James "Shogun" Clavell) and a finely-made film. The protagonist is not the scientist/fly guy, it's his wife; Patricia Owens' spot-on performance may be one of the most overlooked, underrated acting jobs by an actress in a Hollywood film. It's really the story of a woman trying to save her husband.
But: I don't include it in the "Big Five". It's in the handful that round out the top ten, along with Them and When Worlds Collide.

@P-90 It's hard to balance on that edge between what you like and what you consider 'great.' I love THEM and IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE more than I do, say, WAR OF THE WORLDS and would always rather watch either one of those again over it. But as far as importance and significance and all that jazz, WotW runs roughshod over them. Despite Ray Bradbury writing for ICFOC. But then again I love ROBOT MONSTER too, so my critical faculties are probably fried.
