Hey, the link said I'd find nude pics of Ken Vandermark and Matt Shipp. What gives?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:02pm listener james from westwood:

w00t! Congrats on number 100!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:02pm listener james from westwood:

Sorry, Anonymous, you'll have to content yourself with Lady Corduroy and Sex Provider.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:06pm listener james from westwood:

(Not to be confused with the Sex Cauldron, which I thought they closed down: www.youtube.com...)
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:08pm Jeff J:

Hey Listener James and Anonymous! We're full of Hot Aire Balloon for this show. The nude photos of Shipp and Vandermark will be back next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:08pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, listener james, and Anon. Welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:14pm listener james from westwood:

I am enjoying a Labor Day weekend of doing jack-diddly-shit. August was a very busy, weekend-less month. Glad for an island of calm. Hope all USians on the board are enjoying their Mondays off, too, and those outside the States are slacking off in solidarity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

adventurous jazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:15pm Jeff Golick:

That's my favorite thing to do, ljfw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:16pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, UM. How do you keep up this pace? Gonna need to lie down soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

What pace is that, Jeff?
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:16pm Jeff J:

We're turning the adventurous and the jazz inside-out for this show, UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:17pm Uncle Michael:

whee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:17pm Jeff Golick:

Songs less than ten minutes long, in a row.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:18pm Uncle Michael:

My show is almost always right at 50 tracks. That's a buttload of Kenzo.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:19pm Jeff J:

Lyrics! Back-up singers! Sing-a-long hooks! No extra charge, even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:19pm listener james from westwood:

Wasn't "A Buttload of Kenzo" the title of his Marathon premium?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:19pm Uncle Michael:

Friday I'm just putting "Ascension" on infinite loop.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:20pm doca:

Hey, Jeff! Hey, all. It's not holiday here, but it sure feels like!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:21pm Uncle Michael:

Happy 100th, guys. It's also my dad's birthday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:21pm Brian in UK:

Happy Bidet, Jeffs. Trying to comprehend Labor (your spelling) means time off.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:21pm doca:

So, guys, let me start asking you. I have a friend who just went to NY to stay a year while on a Fullbright scholarship. I have the plan to visit him. Is it better in late February during the WFMU marathon or in May to catch up the Record Fair? (I'll have classes from March to July, so that's why I'm considering going in the winter)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:22pm Uncle Michael:

I haven't heard this Hoodoo Gurus since...maybe the year it came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:22pm pacific standard simon:

@james - Nope, but I'm happy to say that my copy finally arrived!
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:22pm Jeff J:

Hey DOCA! Glad it's feeling holiday-ish there. As for NYC, you want to come when the weather is better if you can swing it and the Record Fair is a nice bonus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:23pm Jeff Golick:

@doca: I second what Jeff J said, re NY in May vs Feb.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:24pm Jeff J:

Hey Brian in UK! Labor here is a sad, tattered shadow of its former glorious self. But, you know, we'll take the day off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:25pm Uncle Michael:

I shall return...I have to go trim up some apples for applesauce.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:26pm Jeff J:

Happy birthday to your Dad, UM. And we look forward to the Ascension loop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:26pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks for coming early, UM. Welcome anytime...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:26pm pacific standard simon:

I spent my holiday yesterday collecting pears and dog poop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:27pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, @pss is here! Don't get 'em confused, is all.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:28pm doca:

@Jeff J./Jeff G.: Yeah, I think in May the weather in better (but I'm used to lousy weather here in Porto Alegre) plus I got more time to save money.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:29pm Jeff J:

Hello Pacific Standard Simon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:29pm Doug Schulkind:

@pacific standard simon
I am gonna go ahead and pass on that torte. I'm not really that hungry is all.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:29pm doca:

I miss Sleater-Kinney
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:30pm pacific standard simon:

Hiya, Jeff J! AND Jeff G!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:30pm Jeff Golick:

@doca: US TOO. Concerned that Carrie will be better known for Portlandia when all is said and done.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:30pm Jeff J:

Us too, DOCA. We keep trying to start reunion rumors but they ain't taking the hint yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:31pm Brian in UK:

@Jeff J perhaps readings from Studs Terkel might be appropriate.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:32pm doca:

@Jeff G: Yes, I'm of dubious opinion regarding her appearance in Portlandia. The same for Portlandia in general (sorry)
@Jeff J: Keep the rumors going, one day they'll take it!
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:35pm JakeGould:

Some of “Portlandia” is great, but too much of it is improve noodling bullshit.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:36pm ndbob:

greetings Jeff's et al - here fora while @doca I miss Sleater-Kinney too
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:37pm doca:

"improve noodling bullshit" is an apt description for a lot of things, thanks @JakeGould
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:38pm JakeGould:

That said, this sketch is great. www.youtube.com...
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:39pm Jeff J:

@Brian - We usually just play some warped Woody Guthrie sides at the wrong speed and weep quietly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:41pm pacific standard simon:

There should be a prize for the first woman to go into labor on Labor Day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:41pm Jeff Golick:

@pss: Tune into your local newscast tonight...
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:41pm Jeff J:

"Portlandia" has great moments, but Carrie is avoiding her true calling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:42pm Jeff Golick:

I feel like this show is our way of telling this Summer of Shit (news-wise) to fuck off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:43pm Brian in UK:

Nice to let your hair down metaphorically at least!

Always love the line 'This is not available in the shops'
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:45pm Jeff J:

@JakeGould - agreed on that sketch!
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:47pm doca:

@JakeGould: Gonna watch it later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:47pm pacific standard simon:

Nowadays, Iggy really IS "loose" -- have you seen his skin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:49pm Brian in UK:

This was another bold move for Elektra at the time. 1969?
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:49pm JakeGould:

“Shell art is OVER!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:49pm listener james from westwood:

It's not loose, it's "relaxed fit."
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:49pm ndbob:

@simon and I listen to his BBC show
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:49pm Jeff J:

This one goes out to our Uncle Fred
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:50pm Jeff Golick:

Not a fan of rhyming dictionaries.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:51pm hyde:

happy 100th birthday, old timers
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 12:52pm doca:

@Jeff G. and Jeff J: Happy 100th show. I'm going out but I hope I'm back soon to listen to the rest of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:53pm Jeff Golick:

Ok take care, @doca, and thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:53pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:53pm pacific standard simon:

Good one, james.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:54pm Jeff Golick:

@Brian, if I recall correctly, it didn't end well for the boys at Elektra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 12:55pm Doug Schulkind:

One of my earliest jobs in publishing was proofreading a rhyming dictionary by the great songwriter Sammy Kahn. It was for Facts On File, Jeff G.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:01pm pacific standard simon:

I still have my original 45 of that Pere Ubu song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:01pm Uncle Michael:

Apocalyptic Hellscape is about to start rehearsing...as soon as we find a drummer....
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:03pm Jeff J:

Is she singing "Hello Kitty" on here? A topical reference to the revelation about the non-cat news?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:04pm Uncle Michael:

Very few people know that Hello Kitty's name is not Schroedinger, yet it is.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:04pm Jeff J:

Remember many of those FOF dictionaries, Doug. Think we have a few somewhere...
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:05pm Jeff J:

Ha, UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:06pm Jeff Golick:

@Doug: all roads lead to FOF
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Scary thought, JG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:09pm listener james from westwood:

Hooray for the Beasties and Le Tigre!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:10pm Jeff Golick:

Kathleen Hanna's voice is the QUEEN OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:13pm Jeff Golick:

Jesus no one could touch PE at their peak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:19pm listener james from westwood:

Fuckin' firebomb. that "Nation of Millions" album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:26pm Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: no lie.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:26pm duke:

Happy 100th. What did I miss?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:27pm Jeff Golick:

I'd like to send a shout-out to the folks at WFMU who favor proper title capitalization rules when entering albums in the database.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:27pm Jeff J:

So many great versions of "Dark End of the Street"
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:28pm Jeff J:

Hey Duke! We're going "in" for the 100th. Some fave non-jazz tunes. Not used to having so many tunes in one show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:28pm Jeff Golick:

Heya, @duke! Oh, just some Superstars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:29pm Doug Schulkind:

You have to really suck bad to screw up a Dan Penn song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:30pm Jeff Golick:

@Doug: I could do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:31pm Doug Schulkind:

You could pull an "Amanda" and we could be the judge...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:31pm Uncle Michael:

I've heard this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:32pm Jeff Golick:

Sam Cooke and PJ Harvey would make a nice couple.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:33pm Jeff Golick:

@Doug: I know the FCC doesn't care what we do here, but they may make an exception for my singing.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:37pm Jeff J:

Lovely appearance here by Terry Hall of the Specials
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:38pm Brian in UK:

Oh for some DP now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:40pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
I think maybe Homeland Security would have jurisdiction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:40pm Brian in UK:

@Jeffs I made this comment the other day so apologies for repeating. I find the production/mixing on the Burritos first album could have been better all round.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:41pm Brian in UK:

If Gary Usher had produced it. Well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:44pm Uncle Michael:

I've probably mentioned that my first P-Funk show was a day or two after Eddie Hazel died and Michael Hampton played a very long and very wonderful Maggot Brain in Eddie's honor.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:44pm Jeff J:

That production never bothered us -- maybe just so happy to hear Gram Parsons singing and not, say, Roger McGuinn whose vocals on Sweetheart missed the mark for us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:45pm Brian in UK:

You Don't Miss Your Water...........
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:45pm Jeff Golick:

@UM: whoa. That must've been quite something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:45pm Jeff Golick:

@Brian: DP?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:46pm Brian in UK:

Durban Poison.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:47pm holland oats:

hullo all - good to see d:o doesn't stand for day off - happy 100th showversary jeffs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:47pm Jeff Golick:

Ah! Ah.
I don't know what that is...
(((quick google search later)))
Ah! Aha. Yes.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:47pm Jeff J:

UM - sounds amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:47pm Brian in UK:

Boring fact, I saw Gram Parsons at the Royal Albert Hall in 1968 with The Byrds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:48pm Brian in UK:

You might not have got it over your way in the 60/70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

It was. The show itself was amazing. It was 4 and a half hours of non-stop music...though everyone but the drummer got at least one break. It was a New Years Eve concert in a big place with tables and chairs and champagne and finger food. There was a dance floor and things like portrait setups so people could get photographed with their dates. It was like prom...for 40 year-old black people. I don't think there were a dozen white folks there. I wore my vintage sharkskin suit an my wife looked pretty good too. Danced, danced, danced and sweat right through that suit. it was the best time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:50pm pacific standard simon:

Gotta go -- some of us laborers do have to labor today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:51pm Uncle Michael:

down tools!
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:51pm Jeff J:

Thanks for stopping by, PSS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:52pm Brian in UK:

Mike Watt does a good homage to Maggot Brain but....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:53pm Uncle Michael:

I've seen Watt but I haven't seen that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:54pm Brian in UK:

Not sure if he has done it live, on Ball Hog.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:54pm ndbob:

excellent show Jeff's! - might be back
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

I once saw him playing in a band with J. Mascis. I would think J. could handle Maggot Brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:56pm Brian in UK:

Exactly Uncle he plays it with Mike & Bernie Worrell on thr record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:57pm Uncle Michael:

Mascis is on the record? I saw them together probably seven years after that album.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:58pm Jeff J:

Thanks ndbob! We'll be here - trying to end the show with the proverbial bang. If the TNT dries out in time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 1:58pm Brian in UK:

Hey give Roger a break. Not a great voice or song writer but that jangly twelve string. There would be an ocean liner full of bands unheard without that.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 1:59pm Jeff J:

Love how Robert Christgau said Peter Stampfel sung like "a chicken who just won the lottery." A high compliment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:00pm Uncle Michael:

I'd hate to think of a world in which Roger hadn't mightily pissed-off David Crosby. He's the grain of sand that produces oysters.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 2:01pm Jeff J:

Brian - Love Roger's guitar playing. Sometimes dig his singing. But not during the Sweetheart era. Not sure why it rubs me the wrong way in that era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:02pm Doug Schulkind:

I didn't make it to Maine this summer. I missed my fried clamtones. The best in the universe, from here: www.mainetravelmaven.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:02pm Jeff Golick:

I love singing along to this Jorge Ben (in my fashion).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:03pm Brian in UK:

Country was a foreign land for Roger coming from folk. The wonderful thing about Roger he was an open book.
Gram's voice is just SO right.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 2:05pm Jeff J:

Agreed on all counts, Brian.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 2:05pm Jeff J:

And speaking of golden voices...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:06pm Uncle Michael:

You won't believe me but I saw Diana Krall kick all kinds of ass on this song once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:06pm Brian in UK:

Him & Laughing Len.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

Doug, the Mrs. wants to go to Maine next year. I need to pick your brain. Mine's already picked clean.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 2:10pm Jeff J:

Wow, that's an unlikely cover. Guessing that Krall's hubbie Elvis Costello turned her onto the Waits tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:11pm Doug Schulkind:

My Maine knowledge is fairly limited to Down East. But my Down East knowledge is not fairly limited. Nor unfairly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:12pm Uncle Michael:

It was an unplanned addition to the encores. Possibly EC-attributable. Some friends of mine once went to see TW in Boston and Elvis was seen in the lobby, there in attendance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

Is Down East where we want to be for a week?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:14pm Doug Schulkind:

@UM
Oh God yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:19pm listener james from westwood:

Most horrifying Elvis trivia ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:20pm listener james from westwood:

No, I take that back; the most horrifying bit is that at one point, he got an injection in his EYEBALL.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 2:21pm Jeff J:

My fave Elvis trivia is that he believed he could move clouds with his mind!
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 2:22pm Jeff J:

Though, really, who's to say he couldn't?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:22pm Jeff Golick:

That cloud moment IS a good one.

Boring fact: I have received a needle in my eye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:23pm Jeff Golick:

Most likely not the same injection that Elvis received.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 2:23pm ndbob:

This might be mine www.tabletmag.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:23pm Uncle Michael:

It's easier for the king of rock and roll to get a needle in the eye than to get a camel into heaven.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 2:25pm Jeff J:

That's a great one, ndbob. Never heard it before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:25pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
You mean your injection wasn't a fried PB-and-banana infusion, too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:26pm Jeff Golick:

Yeah, thanks @ndbob!
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 2:27pm ndbob:

yw
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:27pm Jeff Golick:

@Doug: it was a butternut reduction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:29pm listener james from westwood:

You get to switch to pumpkin spice injections tomorrow.

It's interesting to listen to FMU and now with the comments to appreciate how much British music other than hitsville (sorry Berry, I mean top 10) has been enjoyed.

I once had a bad case of banana nut.

UM, I'm afraid to ask where the injection for that was administered.

In me loaf.

The British set. Linda T's voice is still so strong, the way she can move from 'pure' folk to contemporary on her new album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 2:35pm Jeff Golick:

@Brian: we're trying to put together some kind of British folk > jazz show. Sort of a Joe Boyd-to-Keith-Tippett kind of thing. (Don't hold your breath, tho.)
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 2:37pm Jeff J:

Agree about Linda's voice. She did some amazing shows with David Thomas's 2 Pale Boys, showing off her range in a totally different context.

The only time I hold my breath is when the telephone rings after midnight.
Avatar Mon. 9/1/14 2:41pm ndbob:

@brian same here - though when I was growing up the phone rang after midnight all the time - my father being an Ob?GYN

Hard to get into the mood of this song, as at present, in my apt, two teens are mainlining John Oliver show rereuns in one room, while in another, my daughter and wife are Simpsons marathoning. I'm in between.

Labor Day!

One of Lester Bangs' finest moments: him on this song.

Turning 100, we've grown a bit senile on matters relating to time.

Speaking of Lester Bangs, I learned about Peter Laughner from Bangs' bio/obit of him in "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung."

I perma-borrowed that book from my mother in ~89 when she got it from a book club. Once I began listening to FMU a few years later, I was able to ID with more and more of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 3:01pm Jeff Golick:

Oh yeah, @ljfw. Do kids still read that, I wonder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/1/14 3:02pm Jeff Golick:
