I spent my Halloween at home, for the first time it think, ever

Oh I saw a Peter Pan, and I think Captain Hook.

Also, just learned of this "Trunk or Treat" phenomenon, for which I must voice some hearty disapproval.

My local state assemblyman posted a pic online of him participating in Trunk or Treat.

Saw a mother carrying a kid in a snugglie: the snugglie was a fixed up like a movie popcorn box and the kid was wearing a popcorn hat. Hilarious.

I stayed home on Halloween and watched many a Simpson's Halloween special and ate pumpkin pie and candy. It was glorious.

Trunk or Treat is when a bunch of people park their cars in a lot, decorate their open trunks, and hand out candy to kids who are dressed up. What's wrong with door-to-door trick-or-treating?!

I spotted an Andorian, and sugar-fixed the hordes of little ones that came by the door. But only after startling them.

Ken From Hyde Park:

My daugter & I made a costume that copied one she saw at a party the week before. She fit a cardboard box around her middle with a stuffed jacket and a mask head on her back. So it looked like a ghoul was carrying her dismembered torso. She got lots of compliments from people.

Try holding down some buttons KP. In my old car I can't remember which it was, maybe the volume or something? You pushed and held it down to change it.

Where is this trunk or treat biz happening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am

At a suburban strip mall/church parking lot near you!

At least in a well-lit parking lot, there's less chance of getting ambushed by a stray pet bobcat in New Jersey.

Trunk or treat plays into our current short-attention-span society. Kids can finish getting their candy in less than ten minutes.

I'd always thought mile came from mille (sp?), Latin for 1000, and the Romans used it as 1000 paces.

Oh, probably, you're right. But it's been a unit of measurement in England for a veeeerrry long time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am
Liz Berg:

Me such a dummy! I thought UK was like the continental euros!
Avatar 11:15am
Cecile:

they use kilos and whatnot for weight.
  11:16am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Yeah, weird mix of metric and imperial over here. Food, etc. tends to be labelled in grams/kg but everyone still thinks in pounds and ounces. Road signs are all in miles, but we're supposedly participating in the metric system (most people here only have a vague idea what a kilometre is!).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am
Artie:

Would love to see the US go full metric. Think of it as the upstart punk kid of measurement systems!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am
mariano:

In my experience, Brits, Aussies, and Kiwis are able to do miles and kilometers, pounds and kilograms with equal ease. The Brits have one I'll never understand, though, the stone, or 14 pounds. You'll hear things like he weighs 15 stone, etc.
  11:21am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

The eccentric antiquarian John Michell staged a series of anti-Metric protests in the 1970s (the premise being that the ancient systems it was to replaced encoded some kind of mystical knowledge). Metrification is arguably part of the overall flattening-out and homogenisation of reality, so I'm starting to see his point. I weigh 8 stone, incidentally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am
Artie:

@mariano: just think of one stone as 6.35 kilos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Artie:

I weigh in at 2.1 Canterbury wood-elves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am
Greg from Bloomfield:

My car gets 40 rods to the hog's head, and that's the way I likes it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am
Sem Chumbo:

Was in school during the metricfication in Canada, so can do metric into Imperial (British) and American measure, the last of these being different in volumetric measure from British, i.e. US gallon is 80% of Imperial, or 4/5th of 4.5 litres. See how easy it is?

@Liz: I was lucky to see Anne-James Chaton 's performance with Andy Moor, and wikipedia tells me a recording has been made of this collaboration. His recordings, often published inside books, are hard to find. You might find him in the WFMU discothèque, since I recall hearing him once here. The real great stuff is his "Evènements" (German electronic music record label Raster-Noton)
