Was just looking a few minutes ago at something on the early days of the Northern Soul phenomenon in England...ohh, the kids woulda loved this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm

Eugene Church is one of those guys who basically had one song he just did over and over — but goddaaaaaammit, it was a song that deserved to sustain a career!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
Gaylord Fields:

The English Northern Soul scene comprises some of the best — and some of the worst — records ever played for a dance crowd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
Matt F:

"There are only 100 known copies of this record".... because it stinks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Matt F: To paraphrase the great Billy Miller, those records are rare because they're not well done.

When you're taking massive amounts of speed do you really care how good a record is?
  2:50pm
original famous sugarwolf:

Has anyone checked Jacques Dutronc's guitar for the Parisian tiger?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm
Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: No, you care about how much you can resell the record for once you make it a Northern Soul hit, so you can afford to buy more speed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm
Uncle Michael:

Some of the records are good. Most aren't. Some of the bad records are bad records of really cool songs. Most aren't. Some of the bad records sound better to my ears than they probably deserve to, simply because I'm not as sick of them as I am most Motown hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Uncle Michael: As an occasional '60s soul DJ, there's nothing more satisfying than dropping down a big Motown hit after spinning obscurity after obscurity to recontextualize how effin' good those overplayed Motown hits are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm
Doug Schulkind:

I hear Roaring Lion is loose on the outskirs of Paris. Wait, what?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm

Gaylord: and then playing Sugar Pie Honey Bunch in Italian.

Doug, you were saving that joke hoping I'd play one of the big cat calypso singers, weren't you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
Parq:

I wait all week for the cymbal splash that ends the first line of melody in this ska talkover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Matt F: Ha! When I've played that version, the crowd hears that unmistakable intro and goes nuts, and then they all shake their heads along with their moneymakers when Levi Stubbs starts in with the phonetic Italiano!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm
Uncle Michael:

I hear you, Gaylord. I do hear you. Even with the Mowtown stuff, I find myself often more intrigued by some of the obscure stuff off the Complete Motown Singles comps than the 100 Motown songs that have been run into the ground...but plent of those 100 are pretty terrific. And the context you describe can highlight that.

Doug Schulkind:

A pal of mine used to know Roland Alphonso to say hello to (they both lived in Bed-Stuy). One day my friend ran into Alphonso on the street and mentioned that he knew a DJ who played his music on the air a lot. Apparently Alphonso found this startling and teared up. He said he didn't think that anyone even remembered his music. This was back in the early '90s. I always think of that when I hear/play Rolie's music on the radio. Makes me teary.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm
listener james from westwood:

I did indeed. With more casinos in the offing just north of Bergen and even in the Meadowlands (and Jersey City?! Where the hell?!), it's interesting to see how the casino industry has not only fallen short of that promise, but by overexpanding, has subverted it. And this from a guy who loves Las Vegas.

@Uncle Michael: Wow! So my joke was not far from the truth. Excellent!
Avatar 3:43pm
Jeff:

Time to repost an excellent REAL eggnog recipe, via one of
Bill Neal's cookbooks:

Eggnog

- 6 eggs, separated, at room temperature

- About 1/3 cup sugar, or to taste

- 1 c. brandy

- 1 c. rye whiskey

- 1/2 c. dry sherry

- 1/2 c. white rum

- 2 c. milk

- 2 c. heavy cream

- Freshly grated nutmeg

Beat the egg yolks until very light and doubled in volume. Slowly
add the sugar, and continue to beat very hard while carefully adding
the liquors. Stir in the milk and the cream. Beat the egg whites
until stiff and fold in. Set aside or refrigerate several hours
before serving. Garnish the cups with fresh nutmeg. 20 servings.

This recipe can get pretty alcoholic for many people, so you can run
the likker mixture down to 2/3 or even 1/2 what's listed if you want
to pander to the lightweights.

Once you try this, you'll be forever spoiled for whatever it is they have in those supermarket cartons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
listener james from westwood:

Homebrew's always a good plan vs. the seasonal sludge in a carton.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm

Doug, best get the last crops in while you can. Except the Brussels sprouts. They get sweeter with a bit of frost.

Jeff:

@Holly: it's really good. Fluffy in a way that store-bought stuff never can be. A bit less sweet. Definitely more alcoholic than people these days are used to - which I think kind of helps with the time-travel effect this recipe has, a glimpse into a bygone era of punches - but as I said, you can pull back on the booze relative to the rest and the beverage still holds together.
