I am so looking forward to this.

Hi there, Kay!

Farre out, man! (Hey, Marc!)

Tony Coulter:

Unfortunately, the fi of today's first tape (John Livengood) is pretty lo, though it does get better on some tracks.
Avatar 12:00pm
Carmichael:

Hiya Tony and Coulterians. Daddy loves his lo-fi.
Avatar 12:00pm
V Priceless:

Hey Tony! FMU schedule changes, and I forgot about my Tuesday commitment here - senior moment - sheesh!

Doug Schulkind:

Lo-fi, high-hum, I smell the blood of a Tape Hiss, man!
Avatar 12:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Carmichael, V Priceless and Doug!

It is pleasantly strange to be (seemingly) immune to schedule changes.

Carmichael:

From Prog Archives: "Best known for his involvement in the legendary band Spacecraft, john livengood released a few curiosities in solo. His work is mainly devoted to synthesizer's experimentations. his first solo effort published during the early 80's is a strange and original combination between hypnotic-efficiently repetitive pop melodies and unusual programmed electronic arrangements. Livengood has also collaborated with the guitarist Richard Pinhas (Heldon) for the album Cyborg Sally (1994). "
Avatar 12:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Carmichael!

Apologies again for the lo fi-ness. It does get better further on in the tape.
Avatar 12:10pm
Tony Coulter:

... and, of course, this is just how the tape is.

ZRW:

Sounds just fine to me!
Avatar 12:10pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya ZRW! Glad to hear it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Rich in Washington:

it sounds fine to me. It's got some of the inherent mixing choices one now fondly remembers from the 4-track cassette machine era; things hard-panned to either left or right, etc..
Avatar 12:12pm
Tony Coulter:

The Livengood cassette, of course, is the one on the left in the pic above the playlist.
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya Rich! Yeah, the panning on this track is a bit extreme!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm

It's wonderful. I love this kind of Electronic Music.

The Spacecraft album is tops: www.discogs.com...

The other member of Spacecraft (Ivan Coaquette) was also in MEV.

A friend's young daughter — on seeing the overhead cab lights of the snow plow silently appear though the swirling snow: "Oooooh. Spaceship!"

Heya, βrian! Might as well think positive when the aliens arrive.
Avatar 12:28pm
βrian:

My great great great grandparents emigrated here from Vegon during the great Xylon famine. We're all aliens at root.
Avatar 12:32pm
Tony Coulter:

I'm almost a full-blooded Vegon -- it's just that I do eat fish occasionally.
Avatar 12:37pm

Aye, I have the same weakness. And we're having octopus for Thanksgiving … (A midwest tradition, in my book.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm

finally I am here. Hello!
Avatar 12:38pm

I'm having football for Thanksgiving. And ale.
Avatar 12:38pm
Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: Hmm. Octopus and cranberry sauce ... I don't know about that.
Avatar 12:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, DCE! Glad you made it.
Avatar 12:40pm
βrian:

Oh no? Think of a cranberry chutney, with the octopus marinated in fresh orange juice, garlic, and rosemary. For example ...
Avatar 12:44pm
Tony Coulter:

I'd eat a rubber tire if it was smothered in garlic.
Avatar 12:47pm
Carmichael:

As long as everyone else eats it. I don't want to be the only one reeking.
Avatar 12:49pm

I *like* the smell of garlic. I'd wear a garlic cologne, if they made one.

In case any eyeballs are just tuning in, the focus of today's Tape Hiss is progressive electronic/new age cassettes.

What do they call it, the stinking rose?
Avatar 1:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Garlic? Garlic by any other name would stink as sweet.
Avatar 1:12pm

It's a good stink, not a vertiginous-retching-horror kind of stink.

Hi y'all!
Brian, we have a garlic-themed restaurant here in LA called the Stinking Rose. I even drank a garlic martini there.

One garlic-related trick I learned in high school: Garlic extract rubbed into your armpits will induce a temporary fever. It's a great way to get out of school early.

I must have read about him about an article on "essential" new age releases.

A unique review of MacFarlane's music from the Mutant Sounds blogspot: "Wonderful and endearingly rinky dink Dr. Who-ish one-man space rock/electronic oddity and part of an unacknowledged (and rather late arriving) late 70's/early 80's Aussie cosmic rock scene that also included Rainbow Generator/Krozier & The Generator, Quasar and (ahem) Cybotron."
Avatar 1:38pm
Tony Coulter:

Sounds like a review of the 1980 LP "Back from Beyond"?

What is Vdo/Eric/Ex-Mutant S. up To Now?
Avatar 1:41pm

He made a major cross-country move, which I imagine kept him pretty occupied for a bit.
Avatar 1:41pm

Could be, Tony. It was just thrown into MacFarlane's description.

New Age, the genre that is the final frontier for crate diggers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm

when 90s 70s revisionism becomes a crate digging fad we'll know we've had it
Avatar 2:22pm

But I thought newage was a particular kind of effluent.

One amazing thing about Daevid Allen is the continuity of his output. This thing is from 1966, but would fit in with recordings of his from any period.
