A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Bonjour Trouble
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:11am adrian in mpls:

Morning everyone - just saw some cars pinball off each other on my walk into work. thankfully no one got hurt.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:12am adrian in mpls:

And today's art -- so good! Last week I checked out a couple books from the library that have Kenojuak's work in it - I love it so much.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:13am common:

hey adrian! scary...the car thing.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:13am V Priceless:

top o the mornin', peeps!

pardon the newb, but how do i "like" this song?
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:17am swankadelic:

Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:17am Guido from Cologne:

Good morning Trouble and Guten TZAG everyone!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:19am adrian in mpls:

@common - yeah, i wasn't paying attention, and suddenly i heard a huge bang and cars were sliding everywhere, including in my general direction. brave person that i am, i jumped behind a steel railing because i was scared they might skid onto the sidewalk. (they didnt)
  Tue. 1/13/15 9:24am SeanG:

love that use of the Can song vitamin C in Inherent Vice
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:25am common:

that kind of thing has happend to me before, adrian. again, scary! glad you're ok!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:25am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@SeanG Inherent Vice not out in the UK until the 30th. How was it?
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:27am Trouble:

good morning all. yes tome, that is a good think to think about today...i am trying.
  Tue. 1/13/15 9:28am SeanG:

@canterbury it was good! I kinda wish it was longer even though its 2hr 35 min.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:30am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@SeanG As a Pynchon freak I wasn't sure what to think when I heard it was being made into a film. But it seems to have had the author's blessing, so I'll certainly be going to see it.
  Tue. 1/13/15 9:31am SeanG:

yeah the book is better :-)
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:32am braveness23:

Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:46am sphere:

and a Childe ballad to follow. lovely!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:48am braveness23:

Gotta admit, Shirley is hurting my brain a little bit
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:49am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@b23 I hate to say it, but there's an edge to her voice that grates slightly upon mine ears. I'm more of an Anne Briggs kind of elf.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:49am Guido from Cologne:

Shirley sounds unusual on this recording. Some "old-maid" kinda voice. A bit like a Josephine Foster.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:50am redkayak:

@b23 ... Yes, but my sinuses ARE clear now ;)
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:50am sphere:

a lot of Child balladeers (from UK or US) are kinda abrasive. for example, Jean Ritchie grew up in the Appalachians and her vocals can be hard to take.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:51am braveness23:

@redkayak, I think that was the recorders. They'll clear you up right skippy
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:54am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- huh - don't find ShirleyC grating - guess I 'interpret' the 'severe' quality in her vox as being the 'serious' quality of it - both in terms of the dark side of the Folk Tales, & in her being a bit of an Authority of Folk...
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:55am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...her voice seems an expressive instrument to me...
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:55am jamesie:

I love this film! So true
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 9:58am redkayak:

@rev That is true. Heaven knows no one wants to hear ME sing!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:00am Guido from Cologne:

Shirley's voice being absolutely voiud of vibrato can be stressy in times - which is not to be understood against her skills. But this recording here was very special. Usually her voice is much mor light and clear. She seems to have slipped into a certain persona.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:01am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- having a *distinctive* voice is often half the battle
...panda bear are like a perkier fleet foxes
- you are good Trouble!...
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:01am Guido from Cologne:

Animal Collective = the present day Beach Boys ?
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:03am Guido from Cologne:

Panda Bear is one of the Animal Collective main heads ... for those who might not know it.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:04am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- cheers.
  Tue. 1/13/15 10:07am r i s k y:

Oh man, that track just made me so happy. Thanks Trouble!
  Tue. 1/13/15 10:07am blee:

Perfect pitch is the pinnacle of lush melody!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:07am braveness23:

Me too!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:13am Guido from Cologne:

"Everybody's Talking" is a Fred Neil song made famous by Nilson.
Which movie? Midnight Cowboy?
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:13am redkayak:

Darn it. I missed Nilsson during laundry duties :(
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:16am ga01:

Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:17am common:

Guido: yea, midnight cowboy!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:18am patrick321:

So sorry I missed Joe Bataan in JC.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:19am duke:

Yes Joe Bataan
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:20am duke:

I was just reading an article about why all pop music sounds the same. news.ycombinator.com...
Thank goodness all music doesn't sound the same.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:24am braveness23:

is owl glitters part of the animal collective?
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:25am Guido from Cologne:

Do you know this "Country"-mashup here, which prooves it all ...
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:27am duke:

@Guido that's brilliant. I find contemporary "country" even more homogenous than recent pop
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:28am Sem Chumbo:

Late, feeding the birds. Along for the rest of the show, Trouble. on this blizzard-y day.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 10:32am common:

I read that, duke. so much great nonpopular music out there.

Tell them that you do NOT want Liberty State Park put under the auspices of the Meadowlands Commission and/or to be privatized in any way. You must be a New Jersey Resident...but they don't ask for proof..."People Have the Power!"
