Galeet Dardashti on Judeo-Persian Musical Traditions

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Galeet Dardashti's grandfather Younes Dardashti was an iconic performer of Persian Classical music as well as being a Jewish cantor and singing a type of sacred text sung the month before the Jewish High Holidays, the Piyut. During his heyday in Tehran, Jews and Muslims alike would line up to hear Younes Dardashti sing.

Galeet Dardashti was inspired by her grandfather's life to incorporate Judeo-Persian traditions into her own music. She joins us tonight to introduce her music and the traditions at its roots. She'll also explain how biblical stories of strong women were central to her debut solo release The Naming.

Galeet's FMU visit comes ahead of a big concert sharing the bill with another Jewish singer from the Arab world: Dardashti and Bukharian / Uzbek singer Muhabbat Shamayeva perform Wednesday evening February 25th at the Leondard Nimoy Thalia Theatre at Symphony Space, 95th Street and Broadway on the Upper West Side.

And for NJ folks, Galeet is giving a presentation on how, somewhat surprisingly, a trend has emerged as a lot of Israeli pop musicians have been using the sacred texts of Piyuts as the basis for pop songs. (Her presentation is entitled "Sacred Music Hits the Israeli Pop Charts: Money, Music, and Identity".) It's at the Douglass Center, 100 George St. on the Rutgers University campus in New Brunswick on Monday at 7 pm. Info here .
