Oi, Nick!
Hope everyone is well tonight.

Welcome and hats-off to a beautiful start, Nick whose name is also Name.

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:17am Claw!:

I wonder if we'll be the last ones again tonight, Fish. Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Hi Claw! / P-90 / coleacanth - thx all for joining per usual
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:19am Claw!:

Ooh, I'm diggin this Kikagaku Moyo jam!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:22am Claw!:

Hey, P-90, you rascal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 12:22am Ike:

Hey hey hey!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:22am coelacanth:

Claw! i hoped to be in bed sooner tonight; but now there's insanity here and i must stay awake 'till it's calm...
so -cheers!
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:23am V Priceless:

Hey Nick and night owls! Slang Teacher - blast from the past!
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:24am Nick Name:

Hey Ike / V Priceless - welcome!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:26am Claw!:

Ike! V!
It's a party, Y'all!
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:27am V Priceless:

Voivod! Woo!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:28am Claw!:

Right on, Fish. Maybe you won't need to wait for the end of Nick's show for the sleepy stuff. :)
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:28am Claw!:

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:29am Claw!:

Déjà vu?
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:30am V Priceless:

All over again
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:30am coelacanth:

i dunno...now i'm a bit wired.
i think it's calming down already.
maybe my sister knocked her husband out with a cast iron skillet. but- i'm up!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:31am coelacanth:

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:31am Claw!:

Cast-iron skillet, eh? That reminds me of how I got my eyebrows scar...
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:33am Claw!:

It's not that I got hit in the face with one, though. Some hot grease flew up from the surface and burned me. On the face.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:34am coelacanth:

ya know, if i take a break from the wfmu comment board for a few days,as i often do, i may lose track.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:34am Claw!:

Nick, you're killin it!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:35am Claw!:

It's ok. There are always more stories.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:36am coelacanth:

  Fri. 2/27/15 12:36am V Priceless:

You guys listen to any programs on the give the drummer some stream? Some good stuff there too...
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:36am coelacanth:

hells yeah!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:37am Claw!:

V, not really. I used to play the Ichiban stream a lot, but now, if I'm not listening live, I'm pulling up archived shows I missed. There's just no time, Man!
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:38am V Priceless:

I really dig Tony Coulters show and Uncle Michael's Hinky Dinky Time...
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:39am V Priceless:

I hear you Claw. I'm a chronic 'live' listener most of the time.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:40am Claw!:

Yeah, seems like there's never a dull moment. I check out Crayons to Perfume once in a while, but man, it's hard to stay caught up with everything. The abundance of great programming is truly a blessing, but it can also be overwhelming!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:43am coelacanth:

occasionally i'm torn.
but lately i too have been catching archives.
i ★ed those episodes for a reason.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:44am Claw!:

So tell me, local listeners - since I can only listen online from where I am, I hear the Internet streams in the morning from 6:00 to 9:00. What's actually playing in the morning over there?
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:45am V Priceless:

Yeah. I guess you just have to pick your poison, and hope there's no conflict. Tonys show used to conflict with three chord monte on Tuesdays at noon, but now it works great with Joe on Mondays!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:45am Claw!:

SCIENTIST. Fuck, yes.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:45am coelacanth:

you're missing some awesome radio!
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:47am hot bar:

@claw! oh boy, hot topic. I know the answer.

wfmu is part jewish radio station! 6-9 am, m-f, there is a jewish mostly talk radio show. for real.

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:47am coelacanth:

actually what you're missing is jm in the am. jewish moments in the morning.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:49am coelacanth:

that show makes lots of money for fmu during the fundraiser.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:50am Claw!:

Huh. Yeah, I've caught the very ass-end of that before when I tune into Surface Noise. Wasn't sure if that was just a Thursday thing or not... Interesting. I wonder how that came about?
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:50am coelacanth:

fmu for years had a christian show on saturday mornings too.
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:51am V Priceless:

Yeah. The FMU free form signal only exists on the stream for those hours I think. But you should check out the drummer stream (only streaming) for some great live programming too!
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:52am V Priceless:

Plus the stream is censor-free
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:52am hot bar:

I actually don't remember the details. I assume it was around the time when they went independent from the college?
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:53am Claw!:

So what do they play Sat and Sun mornings?
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:55am coelacanth:

jm in the am was on when i started listening to fmu regularly,if i remember right. that was the early 80s.
they were not programed or funded by the college since maybe 1968? -but they were still on the campus property until upsala went bankrupt -in the 90s??
  Fri. 2/27/15 12:55am V Priceless:

The GTDS stream does not have continuous live programming. When it doesn't , it just streams music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 12:57am Ike:

Sat. & Sun. are same as on wfmu.org. Only M-F 6-9 a.m. are split. JM started around 1980-ish when nobody at Upsala College wanted to do a show 6-9 a.m. For a while JM raised more than 1/3 of each marathon total, but if I understand correctly, not quite such a big portion recently as the audience has gotten more elderly.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:57am Claw!:

Whoa. I just learned something new about early-morning FMU! Thanks, Guys!

And V, I will be sure to check out the Give The Drummer stream in the future. Is there a schedule for it posted somewhere?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 12:58am Ike:

  Fri. 2/27/15 12:58am V Priceless:

Yeah Claw. On the home page in left margin.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:59am Claw!:

Thanks, Ike! Good lookin out! :-D
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:02am northguineahills:

damn, I made a comment about how the first second it sounded like Lightning Bolt, even though I've never heard the new album... (comment was devoured by my browser, apparently)
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:03am Claw!:

So does anyone here know how the music on the streams (both GTDS and Ichiban) gets decided? Are the playlists all compiled in advance by anyone in particular?
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:04am V Priceless:

Great sounds Nick!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:05am Claw!:

V speaks the truth. This set has been killer!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:06am P-90:

Very high on the Prog-Meter this morning.
El Exigente approves!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:07am V Priceless:

I can only speak of the GTDS stream. The streaming portion is a free form mix of all sorts, the shows are live FMU DJs doing their own shows in real time! Like an alternate universe with no FCC restrictions.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:09am coelacanth:

i'm 100% guessing, but i think the gtds stream (in-between "live" shows) is an ongoing rebroadcast of shows originally aired live.(probably edited by Doug Shulkind)
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:09am V Priceless:

Doug Schulkind is the main guy behind the GTDS stream.
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:10am Andrea:

Helloooo from London. Great show!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:11am V Priceless:

Many of the GTDS DJs are spread out across the country. Some broadcast from WFMU.
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:12am P-90:

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:12am Claw!:

Yeah, I'm referring to the "free-form mix of all sorts." Do all the FMU DJs just add songs to an enormous playlist and hit "shuffle?" I mean, the songs have to come from somewhere. Who puts em together? I must know!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:12am V Priceless:

Magma is playing NYC in May!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 1:12am Ike:

@coel, nope, between "live" shows, GTDS is Doug Schulkind's curated "jukebox," i.e. his huge hard drive full of thousands of things from his collection.
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:13am Nick Name:

welcome hot bar / Andrea - thx for checking in
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:13am coelacanth:

welcome Andrea!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:14am V Priceless:

Ike is spot on with GTDS stream source material.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:15am Claw!:

Aha! So I was close! It's pretty much an enormous playlist on 'shuffle.'
Well, that must be an impressive collection he's got on that hard drive. Is Ichiban the same? Is that all Doug's stuff also?
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:15am coelacanth:

okay,Ike. that makes even more sense, since editing the talk out of every program would be pretty tedious.
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:17am Nick Name:

thought id share this with you all,Sten Sandell & Evan Parker: www.youtube.com...
it had me cracking up earlier today
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:18am V Priceless:

I'm not up to speed on ichiban or ubu radio...yet!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:19am rw:

Anybody seen Magma recently? They're playing in Los Angeles too and I'm trying to decide whether to go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 1:20am Ike:

Ichiban is Debbie D. according to its blog, w/"short sets from Fool's Paradise with Rex." Ubu used to be that wonderful maniac DJ Kenny G. but I'm not sure now.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:21am Claw!:

Cool, cool. Really appreciate all the info, guys! I felt like I might as well take advantage of having you all here to drop some knowledge on me. Sorry if I reminded anyone of that annoying kid in class that always had a million questions... ;-}
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:22am Claw!:

And Nick, funny video! That congregation looked really confused.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:22am coelacanth:

i didn't have THAT many questions!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:23am V Priceless:

It's all good Claw. I'm still learning too. I love 'Fools Paradise' didn't know Rex was involved with ichiban too.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:23am coelacanth:

yeah- that wasn't an actual "service",was it?
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:24am rw:

V Priceless, I find the ichiban to be pretty perfect background music for BBQ & such. Try it next time you have guests over.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:25am Kurt Gottschalk:

i forgot about magma and thought this was koenjihyakkei for the last half hour or whatever.
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:25am V Priceless:

Will do, thanks for the tip rw!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:25am V Priceless:

Yo Kurt!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:26am hot bar:

Hello, Nick! I'm enjoying the show. That video is great. It's the best thing I've seen in a church since John Cage's Song Books! At christ's church in philly. Apparently no youtube available, unfortunately. One guy put on like 10 ties in the course of an hour.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:26am 37:

ok....magma on a friday morning!!!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:27am coelacanth:

hey rw,'didn't see you here.
Hi Kurt
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:27am Claw!:

Yeah, Ichiban is great! It was my "gateway drug," so to speak, to everything else on FMU. Then I got hooked on the live programming, which led to the web-only streams becoming less important.
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:29am rw:

Hello coelacanth and e'rybody. I guess I didn't properly check in.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:29am 37:

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:29am Kurt Gottschalk:

what, 37 is listening this time of night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 1:30am Ike:

On GTDS, Charlie and Tony C. do excellent shows. Like Doug, they were both once in-person DJs over the regular airwaves before they moved away. Bodega Pop is also great. But I rarely get to hear Tony C. live anymore b/c I also really dig Liz's show. And Doug also has tough competition from Dangerous for the Brain.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:30am Claw!:

Hey, rw!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:31am coelacanth:

i can loan you a book on etiquette if you'd like.
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:31am rw:

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:32am Kurt Gottschalk:

scrolling through the above quickly (what? i'll prep for tomorrow soon enough!) i'm not sure it was answered but gtds stream (when not live 'casts) is doug's picks, randomized. ichiban is debbie d's picks randomized. of course they both have help and also BRAXTON!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:32am Andrea:

I downloaded your previous shows, so good! Don't stop!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:32am Kurt Gottschalk:

and hi, coel!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:32am 37:

yes... i am, csant sleep.... figured this was a good way to decompress..... o,. i own this disc!...
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:33am Claw!:

Thanks, Kurt. :) Knowledge is power!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:33am coelacanth:

yes,Ike, those 2 for me as well are where i get torn most often.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:34am 37:

who's show is this? i like you....
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:35am coelacanth:

he has a nick name. it's Nick Name.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:35am Claw!:

37, it's the one and only Nick Name, of course! :)
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:36am coelacanth:

...though today i kinda wanted to hear Charlie, who's on whilst Diane is.
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:36am V Priceless:

I urge ambitious archivists to check out Uncle Michaels show (Hinky Dinky Time) from 4th of July last year: he pulled a double shift - 6 hours - of Warner Bros Loss Leaders comps. Legendary!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:37am 37:

cool... i am totally digging the nick name!!... thanks all!!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:37am Kurt Gottschalk:

apart from doing a great show, nick is co-honcho of the find care in the community record label. i'm allowed to say that. support the people that support music!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:37am Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:38am Kurt Gottschalk:

(although "find care in the community" is kinda nice.)
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:39am Claw!:

It almost sounds like a challenge, Kurt. Hah!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:39am Nick Name:

Hi rw, thx for checking in
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:40am V Priceless:

Very cool, Kurt. Thanks for sharing that! Will explore!

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:40am coelacanth:

holy shit V! i remember my older brother always THINKING about buying those loss leaders- but he never did. $1./record...i wish i had them all.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:41am Kurt Gottschalk:

hey, nick! i just noticed you opened with aine o'dwyer's 'music for church cleaners'! i just learned about that record. heard an interview with her on resonance-fm (the second coolest radio station in the world).
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:42am Kurt Gottschalk:

and followed with y pants, while i was on the subway. dang.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:42am 37:

i own several of those loss leader WB LPs.... very fun.... my sister and I loved to explore them back in the 70's.... ah.... the 70's....
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:43am Nick Name:

Hi kurt! yes, Zeuhl ! , ha ha. koenjihyakkei / Ruins : Yoshida Tatsuya - great stuff
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:44am V Priceless:

@ coel: ha! well at least now you know where you can hear a good chunk of 'em! : )
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:45am V Priceless:

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:45am coelacanth:

V -i'm Psyched!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:46am hot bar:

thanks vp. Loss Leaders is quite the name. here's a link to that show:
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:46am coelacanth:

...and Thanks for mentioning it.
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:48am V Priceless:

I think there were like 24 or 25 LPs in the Loss Leaders run!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:48am Nick Name:

thx Andrea, i appreciate it - glad you are enjoying
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:48am V Priceless:

Cool! Thanks for finding that, hot bar!
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:49am Nick Name:

thx 37 - enjoy
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:50am hot bar:

whoa, this guy David Lang has a Pulitzer for music. I've never heard of such a thing.

np, vp :)
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:50am Kurt Gottschalk:

i don't think loss leaders fell into this, but it's the same era (and they might have). the book 'stiffed' is a really fascinating account of cut-out bins and how the record industry conspired with the mafia to get out of paying artists royalties in the '70s. and it's not a crackpot book. www.publishersweekly.com...
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:51am Claw!:

Wow, I didn't realize those Loss Leaders records were a thing. I see em at work from time to time, but no one really looks for them. Rock comps tend to be slow sellers for us, so maybe that's why...
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:51am V Priceless:

Wow Kurt!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:51am coelacanth:

i never noticed them again after 7.
i still have all the inner-sleeves, probably from the first run. there was 1 1-record,4 2-record,& 1 3-record set.
...then an album entered the house with another 2-record set.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:53am coelacanth:

...i should say: the sleeves with the forms to order them.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:54am 37:

"schlaggers".... what were some of the other names of those LPs.... I will go have a look....
heard my first alice cooper on one of these
was "zappaed" one of them... no i doubt it
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:54am coelacanth:

Claw! i'm envious that you work in a record store.
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:55am Nick Name:

Kurt: I'm more than certain the Aine O'dwyer cd was missing for a while, i only discovered it last week, glad i did - its really great. Hopefully i'll be able to listen to that interview on the second coolest radio station in the world - they don't archive though? i think ? i played Rick Wakeman live at Lincoln Cathedral a few shows back, he was on the church organ - was good too
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:55am coelacanth:

"the big ball"
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:55am 37:

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:56am Kurt Gottschalk:

hey nick - they're archiving now via mixcloud but it's a bit of a mess.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:56am coelacanth:

i'm not home or i'd go find one of those inner sleeves.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:58am Claw!:

It's a pretty sweet gig, not gonna lie.
Am I broke all the time? Sure!
But do I ever drag my feet on my way into work? Only sometimes! Hah!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:58am 37:

hot platters, the whole burbank catalogue.... man i forgot about all these...
  Fri. 2/27/15 1:58am V Priceless:

@ 37. Yep! 'Zapped' with Alice! That had to be first year, '69 maybe?
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:59am coelacanth:

"songbook",or something?
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 1:59am 37:

the days of wine and vinyl.... i want to go back...now...

What Tome said!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 2:02am Kurt Gottschalk:

NICKNAME! i found it. now i feel a little better about those times getting lost coming out of the holland tunnel. www.mixcloud.com...
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 2:02am Kurt Gottschalk:

it's a _really_ nice interview.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 2:02am coelacanth:

okay, discogs has them listed. the last one i ever saw advertised on an inner sleeve was the 8th one,"zapped".
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 2:05am Claw!:

Yeah, Dr. John!!!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 2:05am 37:

isn't there one called "all singing, all talking, all rocking'?... gris gris gumbo ya ya !!!!!

The album is just "Gris-Gris," I believe. He's referred to as Dr. John the Night Tripper.

I have this record, but I'm not at home to look at it at the moment.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 2:11am Claw!:

"Sun Moon and Herbs" is also fantastic.

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 2:15am coelacanth:
