This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

In California, the plants never stop growing. Especially the weeds.

Roger that, C.

heh, I thought that's what you meant in the first place, you subtle devil
Avatar 7:16pm
Flash Strap:

"Music & Secrets to delight your plants"

BUT WHAT ARE THE SECRETS? I guess we'll never know, not with these ears, restricted to this wavelength
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
listener james from westwood:

Spider plant, Chinese evergreen, snake plant x 2, arrowhead vine, and pothos. Way down from my usual massive complement of plants, after I lost most of my plants to fungus gnats from shitty Miracle-Gro potting soil. (Protip: Bake it at a low temperature for a stretch in a cheapo tinfoil lasagna pan to kill the eggs/larvae.) Must buy many more as the weather improves.
  7:18pm
patashnik:

I'm a succulent man experimenting with mushrooms.
Avatar 7:18pm
Flash Strap:

hmm, are your snake plants now soothed? Side note, has anyone out there ever had snakefruit?
  7:19pm
patashnik:

What does it taste like? For that matter, what does snake taste like?
Avatar 7:20pm
Flash Strap:

let me see, patashnik... some of this stuff might suit your fungus. The succulents should be right at home. I'm a succulent man myself, had a nice set of succulents and cacti when I lived in Mexico. Lots of barrel cactus
Avatar 7:21pm
Flash Strap:

snake tastes like a rubber chicken lightly rubbed down with live catfish, snakefruit is a little harder to describe... tart, woody, looks like a snake on the outside, constipatory side effects
  7:22pm
patashnik:

Oh well. I'd give it a go anyway.
  7:22pm
walkingtrees:

rearranging my succulents and repotting other greenery and then found this to be the theme for this evening
Avatar 7:23pm
Flash Strap:

according to wikipedia, snake fruit has "a starchy 'mouth feel', and a flavour reminiscent of dilute pineapple and lemon juice", so there you go. they should have sent a poet
Avatar 7:24pm
Flash Strap:

walkingtrees! what a profound pleasure.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
listener james from westwood:

The snake plants are always chill. Their fibrous nature prevents observable phototropism. The arrowhead vine, on the other hand, I have to turn every few days or it lists to one side.
  7:24pm
patashnik:

That's a common problem.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
listener james from westwood:

Or maybe it's not light they're seeking. The light and the speakers playing WFMU are in the same direction relative to the plant. Maybe it just has fine taste.
Avatar 7:25pm
Flash Strap:

perhaps they are craning out to hear The Secret, to be delighted
  7:25pm
patashnik:

I had to look up the snake plant. I would've recognised Sansevieria. I have a tiny musica that can't seem to decide what it's doing.
  7:27pm
walkingtrees:

ahoy flash! nice to catch these wave live
Avatar 7:28pm
Flash Strap:

well, just beyond nice to have you with us
  7:31pm
walkingtrees:

got fish frying, fresh copy of Corto Maltese to flip thru, new lighting on the succulent bed, light snow in colorado and your picks for the ears...nice evening indeed..thanks!
Avatar 7:32pm
Flash Strap:

Sounds like a dream, thanks for making me a part of it hoss
  7:34pm
patashnik:

James, I actually had no idea bagged compost could have beasties in it. I've never had a problem and the indoors use an old bag that's been sitting half moist for over a year.
  7:34pm
walkingtrees:

imma try to get spooky ryan in on this
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
listener james from westwood:

It wasn't compost in this case, which may be the difference; it was bagged potting soil. It's the 2nd time Miracle-Gro soil has caused a problem with me. Perhaps actual compost would be better.
  7:37pm
patashnik:

My mistake, potting soil.
  7:39pm
walkingtrees:

"miracle"-gro might be a problem
Avatar 7:39pm
Flash Strap:

Oh, wouldn't that be lovely? I always hope he'll turn up
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Doug Schulkind:

This track has hidden menace.
  7:39pm
patashnik:

What are you folks doing for lighting and fertiliser for indoor succulents?
  7:41pm
walkingtrees:

i like jump start t5 strips...nice and compact, and easy to daisy chain for lighting
Avatar 7:42pm
Flash Strap:

I agree, Doug. Fajerman's whole project is a little threatening
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
listener james from westwood:

The snake plants do OK with eastern exposure and an all-day compact fluorescent. With this setup anything more fleshy, like sedum, jade plants, aloe, agave, won't thrive. Fertilizer for them, I just top-dress with new soil.
  7:42pm
walkingtrees:

also handy for other green amigo pre-flowering
  7:46pm
patashnik:

I don't think I can work a strip into my setup. I've never been sure about CFL but the plants are stuck in a dark room in a dark country.
Avatar 7:47pm
ndbob:

I've taken care of one plant ever .. it died not long after
Avatar 7:48pm
Flash Strap:

Absent a green thumb myself, I'm fortunate to be partnered up with someone who keeps the plants beautiful and alive.
  7:48pm
patashnik:

I do have a few fleshy ones, James. Thriving would be nice but just keeping them healthy year on year would be good. I lost a few just in the past year and can't tell if it's random or me. ;)
  7:50pm
walkingtrees:

strips can be attached to almost any flat surface side or hung from above
  7:52pm
walkingtrees:

spookcUSA wishes you all well....he's presently relocating his abode
Avatar 7:52pm
Flash Strap:

talk about menace, there's not much hidden about it here. sorry if your plants have nightmares, there's light on the other side of this tunnel
Avatar 7:54pm
Flash Strap:

and I well-wish in return of course, but he knows that already
  7:54pm
patashnik:

I think plants manage menacing sounds all right. Mine have to put up with dark D&B from time to time. That might explain things.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
listener james from westwood:

Some of these tracks are pleasantly putting me into a sort of "In Search Of..." mind. Similar instrumentation/patterns to the soundtrack to said series?

This show is just wonderful. I love all the growing sounds. It may be wishful thinking, but I can't wait for a fungus show...whenever that may come.
  8:13pm
walkingtrees:

yay to fungi show....where is everyone residing and what's growing?
Avatar 8:13pm
Flash Strap:

Thanks, Bird. One day perhaps! There's definitely less fungus music out there, to the detriment of us all
  8:17pm
patashnik:

Flash, keep it up. I should be in the mood for something upbeat tonight but I've been happily stuck here. +1 for fungi shows and Vangelis.
  8:17pm

that teisco track
  8:18pm

walkingtrees, Scotland, succulents and mushies if things work out.

Looks like you got a mycological challenge, dear flash...
  8:20pm

im giving another go at my myco experiments soon myself ;) succulents and green friends here...colorado

I'm growing mystery plants myself....A few weeks ago, I went to the international grocery and bought roots that I have never heard of. I'm rooting them now, and I can't wait until they sprout up. It's pretty exciting

What is that, lamb's ear?
  8:24pm
patashnik:

Thanks for the tip as well. I missed out on that show. walking trees, I'm still watching my first try colonise so I'm waiting anxiously.
Avatar 8:26pm

Hey Unca Mike! I have no idea what it is, looks a little too spiky for lamb's ear but I'm no horticulturist
Avatar 8:27pm

And seriously, gang, Private Life of Plants is so cool. It's actually sort of scary sometimes too. Plants are really eerie when you view them at their own speed

I strive for genius, Shayna. Occasionally I nip at its heels with a wicked turn of phrase, and then it's gone from sight, lost in the mists of my density.

Thanks for asking treesman. I'm working on it, but as you can imagine it's not easy. It is a serious goal of my 2015 to just get it done by hook or crook.
