Hahah I'm a hipster about it, @Doug. I'm kinda too young to have really get into cassette, though I did walk around school listening to my tape walkman. I'm still waiting for the CD Renaissance!

I preferred cassettes with shells that screwed together so that I could affect repairs as needed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

So many times, I got out my mini-Philips head screwdriver and opened up a cassette to detangle the tape and reassemble. It almost always worked. I LOVED cassettes.

Nice, Van! My wife and daughter gave me an iPod for my birthday almost 10 years ago. Dirty little secret: I never touched it. I'm just not an iPod kind of guy. I don't have a single MP3 on my iPhone either. I'm a weirdo.

Avatar 9:20am ausmanx:

i don't have ipod or phone either, Doug. but did buy one of those USB cassette players to play old tapes. Chris Forsyth's PEEESSEYE had a six-tape monster which was just too essential... as for killing music, of course downloading is supposedly killing music now, and it's the same corporations complaining about it!

When I worked in an office that couldn't get WFMU in any format, my iPod was vital to filling in the gap. I downloaded FMU archives and threw them onto the iPod, then listened whenever. So much better than listening to other commuters or coworkers.
Avatar 9:22am chromaphone:

Love the sound of cassettes. So warm and inviting. Been digitizing a slew of recordings of another fav radio show from a while back and the warmth seems to translate decently to CD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Hugo:

Tapes are still big in Africa. I have a small collection from Kenya and Malawi. Back when I was living in Thailand, cassettes were the medium. CDs were quite expensive, but things have changed since then. I do have an Ipod, too. Anyone remembering the minidisc recorder? I have two of those.

i suspect if i lived to 100 i'd want to kill people too. as for Richie, Brian, it was a good innings but of course it's all quite ludicrous the way they're carrying on about it over here, like he was the most important person who ever lived. i mean, even Bradman was just a guy who hit a ball with a stick

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Webhamster Henry:

Good morning Doug - I still have a lot of cassettes - mostly airchecks of old , pre archive WFMU shows. I also used to record a lot, and have a pair of binaural mics-in-the headphones that I could walk around town with and capture an eerie, "you are there" quality with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Webhamster Henry:

Mr. Tony Coulter has a regular "played off cassette" Tape Hiss feature of his GTDS show.
Avatar 9:36am still b/p:

Listening to an old bargain cassette of Tony Bennett's 50s - 60s hits on my Easter ride outa town...when it suddenly occurred to me,"Oh, there's probably a Dolby button on this (very infrequently used) player." Made a remarkable difference, but ya know, for that tape, I could go either way, hiss-wise.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:37am Uncle Michael:

I'll probably miss Steve and the Dukes again. The timing isn't optimal.
Avatar 9:37am doca:

@Henry: You should pass some of those recorded shows to WFMU to extend its archives
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38am Parq:

James @ 9:22. My iPod -- an old school 180G rotating disc one -- is still essential to car trips. Haven't listened to the radio in a car in years, except once in a while when I'm passing through WFMU's signal area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Hugo:

@Doug: joik correctly pronounced. As for Hætta, it is pronounced as Hatta - hat-ta.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:39am Brian in UK:

Weirdly, from the IMDB description: " the seeming absent-mindedness and dim-wittedness of the Columbo character has been replaced with an unsatisfying and pronounced arrogance"

That kind of describes per-dishevelment, season one Columbo.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

I think there's some dishevelment disambiguation being displayed here.
Avatar 10:53am Flash Strap:

yeah that whole episode is just wrong. it's even worse than the description. I don't remember him being arrogant so much as the whole thing having a garish slapstick vibe, with Columbo being tailed by bumbling assistants and everyone running into each other constantly. And of course, there's a twist halfway through, in total violation of the formula, which is fine as an idea, but doesn't work at all in practice.
Avatar 10:54am Flash Strap:

but then, the same guy gives us "Identity Crisis", on my shortest list of best Columbo eps, ever.

I met Peter Falk during the Olympic Arts Festival in LA, 1984, at Royce Hall. It was a performance by Piccolo Teatro di Milano of Shakespeare's "The Tempest," a glorious production (and in Italian!). The Mannix theme was better than the one for The Prisoner? You know, that 1960's BBC show that weather balloon that chased people.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:08am Alex In Illinois:

In the Prisoner theme, thunder and rain and conga drums were the first sounds, and a crescendo of brass sounds is synchronized with his car passing on the highway. Later on in the intro sequence, whenever he is slams his fist on a desk, the thunder is intertwined with the guitar. Puckkc! Doo-doot-doot-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo Puckck! Puckkc! Doo-doot-doot-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo Puckck!.

I am a Dr. Who fan, and I like its theme enough that I will play it on an accordion some time, but The Prisoner still is still more dramatic. And the Monkees theme? I can't be the only one here who with friends would re-enact that intro sequence singing that tune. We were never able to do that Monkees walk for a whole block. How far was anyone else here able to do that Monkees walk?
