Mr. Conklin! I'm up unusually late tonight. Nice to hear (at least the first part of) your show in real time!
Avatar 3:23am
Jeff Conklin:

Thanks, rw! Live Steve Gunn set coming up shortly
  3:27am
rw:

K. I'll stay up a little longer... So when you do a show like this is it better to stay up all night or get a short nap in beforehand? I ask because I had this time slot at my college radio station and it was always a dilemma. It always took me the entire week to recover too.
  3:30am
P-90:

Good Morning, DJ Jeff.
Avatar 3:31am
Jeff Conklin:

I'll let you know when I figure it out, man....
  3:35am
rw:

:)

Speaking of The Band, this week I got to photograph a small pile of rock and roll memorabilia. Working on a photo of Robbie Robertson's guitar now. (I think it's his. It's a bronze colored Strat with a black pick guard and maple neck.)

Jeff Conklin:

Morning, P-90. That's cool, rw!!
  3:37am
rw:

Yeah, it's pretty odd/cool looking. Later this week I think I get to photograph Janice's pink boa!
  3:38am
P-90:

rw: Sounds like RR's unique Strat, he actually had the body dipped in bronze like they used to do with baby shoes and other memorabilia. Is the middle pickup (sausage-shaped gizmo under the strings) posittioned all the way back, next to the other one that's by the bridge? If so it's the one he played at The Last Waltz show, etc.
  3:40am
rw:

P-90 That's it.
  3:46am
rw:

They also have a Jerry Garcia with an inlaid wolf. Unfortunately I didn't get to photo that one because they already had an image. I did get to shoot a smashed Hendrix sunburst Strat though!
Avatar 3:47am
Jeff Conklin:

Touch Jer's guitar for me , please.
Avatar 3:49am
pierre:

Bonjour Jeff and Avant listeners !
  3:50am
rw:

Ha! Will do. I'm hoping they'll like my photos better than the existing one and let me photograph that one too! It's pretty darned cool!

P-90 That's pretty interesting about the bronze dipping.

hopefully everybody is mesmerized by this new Bachman tune

the kid is amazing
  4:10am
P-90:

@DJ Jeff: Yes, "mesmerized". I've always been a big fan of this kind of 12-string stuff. blame it all on that fucking armadillo, you know the one...
@ rw: are you saying the "pile of memorabilia" includes the ORIGINAL "Wolf" guitar? That sold at auction for somewhere north of a quarter million bucks. Is this a private collection?
  4:19am
P-90:

OK, a news report from the year of the auction (2002) says it went for $700,000!
Jerry didn't play it for that long, but it was essentially his first "custom" guitar, so it's historically very significant. The story about the "wolf" was that it was a popular sticker that you get by mail order from ads that ran in every comic book for years. Jerry stuck it on the guitar, then later returned the guitar to the builder for refinements. When it came back, it took him a while to notice that the sticker had been painstakingly duplicated in inlaid wood by Doug Irwin, the builder...

Yo JC, nice to be on live. Been doing you on delay (don't tell Devon)
  4:23am
rw:

JC, Mesmerized.

P-90, It's for a museum show at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles honoring or associated with Bill Graham which opens relatively soon. I don't know who's loaning the guitar but that's the one. That's a great story too!
  4:28am
P-90:

So the 'pile' is on loan from several different private collections, the Garcia and Last Waltz connections to Graham are key. Do you have an Instagram or other site where you post your stuff?
Avatar 4:28am
Jeff Conklin:

I want to see that exhibition, read about it. I'll be out that way in June, hope its still going on
  4:35am
rw:

P-90 I don't have an instagram. I'd post them for you but I'm not sure if they're wanting to keep them secret for now. They're for Rolling Stone. Deadline is Friday so they'll probably be up soon.

JC I think it opens mid May. Should be up through June at least. I've seen bits and pieces in the basement. I think you'll like it.

And loving this Dead stuff. Even when you were doing Bring Out Your Dead I used to listen, but have none on my machine. Keep educating JC, I like it.

Go Phil!
  4:54am
Mark:

I think it's great that you play the Dead even though sometimes the haters come out in droves. I'm generally pro-Dead--saw them twice, wasn't blown away either time, but didn't think they sucked, either. But I loved the risks they took and the possibility that on any given night, you might see one of the greatest shows in history. I'll take that over a "professional" band churning through the same set list, night after night, any time.
  4:56am
Mark:

Recently picked up "Dick's Picks. Vol. 9" recorded at the University of Montana, 5/14/74. This Roosevelt Stadium must have been a "Wall of Sound" show, too, right?
Avatar 4:57am
Jeff Conklin:

Hey, Mark. I never saw them. Yes, Wall of Sound made its debut in May of '74 I believe.
  5:00am
rb:

This is off Dick's Picks 31 I believe
Avatar 5:01am

It is on there, rb, but this is a matrix off the Live Music Archive. Sounds better to me...

I'm amazed and impressed when you guys get artists like Steve Gunn to come in and do live sets at weird times like 3 in the morning. Yesterday, Nate had a band called The Connections in, rocking out at 8 am on a Sunday morning!
Avatar 5:18am
Jeff Conklin:

That set was recorded in the cold light of day, Mark

Lovely, I don't recall hearing Sarah Louise before. A find.

I've never listened to this show before, it's stellar!
  5:57am
Mark:

Well, it's still cool all the great artists who appreciate what FMU does enough to give their time and come in and play and provide the station with unique content that nobody else has. And Nate's band yesterday really did come in and jam at 8 in the morning on a Sunday! @monodone, you done did it now--you're hooked for life!
Avatar 5:57am
Jeff Conklin:

Thanks, monodons!

Thanks to all of you for spending yr time with me. It's much appreciated. Everybody have a great week!
