Greetings, Brian in UK!

My first turntable was a portable, avocado green 45-player/AM radio all in one. Got it for my 12th birthday. It was the radio, not the turntable, that would have the more profound effect on my life. I used to listen to that AM radio all night, every night for the rest of my childhood. I still go to bed every night with the radio in my ear.

Hello annie
  9:36am Listener Robert:

A "suitcase" arrangement like that was very common. We had one phonograph that was a little more compact than the one shown. When Mother bought stereo, the "suitcase" had on its sides hinged speakers that clipped closed, but could easily be lifted out of their hinges for greater stereo spatial separation, & then rehanged to pack up. We didn't take them places, but they were nice tabletop models that could be kept out off the way.

We also had a console in the living room that also held the liquor cabinet & a bookcase. We never used it for audio of any kind once Mother got the portable stereo.

Avatar 10:05am ausmanx:

it's definitely LIT-un. and Wolf Hall as a series is work of some brilliance, and will make Rylance a star. if he wants to be one. they spent 20,000 pounds on candles for the show...

Mark Rylance is already a star leastways overhere.
  10:08am Listener Robert:

I actually used to like Sterling a lot, but he's far worn out his welcome, & himself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Pedro G.:

John Sterling and Susan Waldman are the worst broadcast team in sports. Sterling wants to draw attention to himself, which is not what it's about. The master, Vin Scully, wants to bring you to the game.
Avatar 🥁 10:08am βrian:

Ernie Harwell. We'd turn off the TV volume and turn on the radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am tikk:

Avatar 🥁 10:09am βrian:

@I can one-up that: I don't know a single Yankee fan at all!
  10:09am Listener Robert:

Sterling is very different from how he used to be 40 yrs. ago. Waldman always sounds like she's eating, which I think a lot of the time, she is.
  10:10am Listener Robert:

Tikk, it's an example of someone's getting into a good place & then going on reputation.
  10:12am Listener Robert:

When the Yankees play the Mets, if you listen to the Mets b'cast, it's amazing how much more they tell you about what's going on, or other useful info, than the Yankee b'cast.
Avatar 10:12am ausmanx:

guess that depends on yr definition of star, Brian? even in UK i wouldn't have called him that since he's done so little TV and film he's not so well known?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:12am Uncle Michael:

Doug? Bad file?

G'morning.
  10:13am Listener Robert:

Even back 40 yrs. ago, Sterling tended somewhat to overplay his rep. They used to get him to announce football, at which he was just incompetent. But he was good for baseball & fairly good for hockey.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:13am Uncle Michael:

That's part of the music?
  10:14am gina k:

re:BB , The first two sets was good respect, it all comes from the same root.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
True! Sterling was way different and better, earlier in his career. He used to do radio for Washington Diplomats soccer if I remember correctly. I have a soft spot for Suzyn Waldman. She is awful on the Yankees radiocasts, but I love hearing her Boston accent calling Yankee games!

@Uncle Michael
I love you you silly fool!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:15am Jeff Golick:

Sterling's home run call has got to be the worst in baseball.
Avatar 10:17am ausmanx:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

Thank you to Jeff Golick for sharing this Paul Lytton record and for not killing me for playing it first before he did on his show(s).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:18am Jeff Golick:

Ps. That's WOLF HALL on Broadway (at the Winter Garden, previous home of CATS!), not on TV. RSC, not Rylance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
As grating and embarrassing has Sterling's custom home run calls for each Yankee, I think I hate Michael Kay's hideous frat-boy holler "Seeee-ya!" even more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

Thank you for understanding, gina k!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:20am listener james from westwood:

I can stand nails on a chalkboard, but not JS's home run calling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

I still am chuckling to Uncle Michael's query, "That's part of the music?"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21am Uncle Michael:

My daily baseball broadcaster has no call. He'll shout "it's GONE," but that's as close to a call as he's got...and bless him for that.

Doug, I wasn't kidding. I thought you needed to know. I'm still not sure you were hearing what I was hearing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: same re wife reading the books; coolness; etc.

Does Sterling have custom calls now? I'm thinking of his interminable "It is far!...It is long!..." or whatever. Kay's "See-ya" is worse, though, yes.

And re Lytton, can think of no better show for its debut!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

I grew up listening to Chuck Thompson call Orioles games. When something good would happen, or after a particularly thrilling win, he'd bellow "Ain't the beer cold!"

@Uncle Michael
Oh you silly wonderful man. OF COURSE IT WAS PART OF THE MUSIC!

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:25am Alex In Illinois:

In the old days, the sports announcers all started out on radio, and were radio-minded. So the default was tell as much of what was going on a clearly and quickly as you can. Maybe some of the terms even evolved for that purpose?
  10:25am George from Bristol UK:

Heh Doug, we're twins ! I played a track by África Negra and Joao Seria on my 2 hour BCfm Silversound Contrasts radio show yesterday in Bristol UK. "Mino Bo Bé Quacueda" - the track with the really long fade out as the band rumba away down the street - from Carambola (África Negra 83).

Did you hear that one of the guys Suarez bit, Ivanovic (Chelsea) went on to bite some one else?? That can only mean that Suarez is a vampire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

@Brain in UK
Wow, I didn't realize either. Something to chew on.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:56am Brian in UK:

What do you do with a player who is a serial biter, recially abuses opponents and is a quite brilliant footballer. BUY HIM. Barcelona have a wonderful front line but the Italians can defend and have patience by the bucketload..

OK Mr. Drummer, gotta go run errands and get ready to coach my son's soccer practice--working on restarts. Thanks for the tunes!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:59am Brian in UK:

I used to play a game with those who thought they were hip by making up names and hear them say yeah great band. One was 'Plastic Tearful & the One-Eyed Bucketload' Havn't thought of that in years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

See ya later, alid¢ pätor
  11:00am Listener Robert:

DC Pat, do you include the (uncommon) drop ball as a restart you practice? I bet not.

BTW, I coach chidlren in tackle football.

Catching up here. A renowned medical doctor wrote a memoir, "Buckets of Patients." Another great band: Peter O'Toole Lending Library.
Avatar 11:11am d¢ pät:

LRobert--good point. It doesn't come into the games much but does happen. mostly working on throw-ins, corners, goal kicks--which they screw up sometimes and give up the ball. I'll do some drop balls today too!

Oh, to be in London in June, when a really cool classical festival is slated, Swept Away, featuring the music of Kurt Weill, Ernst Toch, and many others: http://www.kingsplace.co.uk/whats-on-book-tickets/curated-weeks/the-continuum-ensemble-swept-away I work with one of Toch's grandchildren. His interest in Toch is purely due to the family connection. He has no idea who Stefan Wolpe, Ernst Krenek, Erwin Schulhoff, etc., are.

@Dean we are planning to go to Vienna in August to see the sights travelling by train, then on to Brno to watch the MotoGP. Really captivated by the twenty years before WW1 and Stefan Zweig's writing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

There is just miles and miles and miles and miles and miles of heart on display in these songs. I wish I could experience even a fleeting moment of the "express yourself by any means necessary no matter what" gumption that the folks in this sequence eat for breakfast. I find it all so breathtaking and impressive. And heartbreaking. In a good way.
  11:28am Dean:

@Brian in UK: Funny you mention Zweig. I need to re-read his memoir, The World of Yesterday. (No, it's not called "Buckets of..." anything.) But I also have a book of his about Balzac and perhaps a novel or two, all unread, unopened.

And speaking of the World War (which wasn't WWI until there was a WWII), I have been reading Kenneth Burke's literary criticism written between the Wars. His observations are utterly fresh in many respects, despite their being from a world very much of yesterday.

I am making a leek and goat cheese pie these days. Sometimes with prosciutto. The leeks get sautéed in butter, cream and white wine. Um, like, really good.
  11:45am Dean:

@Brian in UK: News to me, too, but I'm not all that tuned into movie stuff. For instance, about ten years ago I predicted the next blockbuster would be a contrived biopic about Gutenberg, the "invention" of movable type, the machinations surrounding a claim to the invention, his love life, etc. I figured we'd see one within two years.

Bobby Brown is performing on homemade instruments here. He had about 50 different contraptions, all built on a rig he could transport in his van. He would pull up to a site, pull out his rig and play. This recording was made on the beach near Laguna.
