Minkus:
Didn't realize this was happening. Awesome. Got a request: Glenn Campbell - Guess I'm Dumb. Brian co-wrote it I believe. Got a big urge to listen to it now, but can't turn off the show. :)
![]() |
![]() "Surf's Up" is so damn lovely. |
![]() |
![]() Campbell was quite a surf guitar player back in the day. Not surprised if he appeared somewhere on an early Beach Boys album. |
Wed. 6/17/15 3:29pm
Bill:

"Skeletal" is the way I felt about 20/20.
![]() |
![]() My perennial argument: Syd Barrett & Skip Spence & Roky Erickson are kewl Damage Psych - but 'Smiley Smile' is unkewl - because:'Beach Boys'?? Nuh-uh, don't wash... |

![]() |
![]() @mick: re? ...yeah - & there was a fire somewhere, & Brian freaked himself out, right? |

Smiley Smiles = Satanic Majesties = Sgt. Pepper

![]() |
![]() 8 whole-show clicks within the first hour and a quarter may be a new record. |
![]() |
![]() yeah, this is totally a click worthy show. Gonna have to revisit this when its not so noisy around me. |
![]() |
![]() Now I did get the Keep an Eye on Summer Sessions. They are chock full of Beach Boys goodness. |
![]() |
![]() Lore is 'Warmth...' done (written?) the very day of JFK assassination - but pre-Dylan that had to be 'subtextual' (couldn't say it outright)... |
![]() |
![]() Nice to do a tribute to someone who isn't dead yet! |
Wed. 6/17/15 4:24pm
lloyd michigan:
Four Freshmen. Pride of Butler University!
![]() |
![]() I love this history of influences. |
![]() |
![]() Has been said: Beatles had not only one (two?) less vocal harmony part(s) - but didn't have that background in vocal arrangements either... |
Wed. 6/17/15 4:25pm
paula pc:
my squeaky-clean mom is an obsessive fan of Stan Kenton and the Four Freshmen but was bewildered by the Beach Boys
Wed. 6/17/15 4:26pm

I love Stan Kenton but cannot deal with the Four Freshmen at all
![]() |
![]() This needs to be mapped! |

Wed. 6/17/15 4:43pm
Lynn:
Speaking as a chick, I loved the movie. But not for Melinda's story. I loved the scenes of Brian's creativity (in the studio especially). I was interested in another chick from the movie and found a great interview with Carol Kaye on youtube. Also must say, I don't really like the Beach Boys because of the vocals-falsetto :( and the lyrics. Am loving this show today with all the instrumentals. Thanks!
Wed. 6/17/15 4:43pm
phat:
Holy cow! That is where those harmonies came from.
![]() |
![]() - yeah - needs the Chuck Berry. |
Wed. 6/17/15 4:44pm
paula pc:
@ Lynn -- and here's the source of that falsetto. it is still fingernails on the chalkboard to me but makes my mom swoon
Wed. 6/17/15 4:44pm
phat:
And, hearing this I hear the Stan Kenton.
![]() |
![]() Wait a minute. The movie's not a documentary? |
Wed. 6/17/15 4:45pm
phat:
Hell. Those strings and trombone are VERY Stan Kenton.
![]() |
![]() I want to see the movie just to see Mark Linett playing Chuck Britz |
Wed. 6/17/15 4:46pm

![]() sniff. this and surf's up. |
![]() |

![]() Rob Wasserman is a jazz bass player who played on a lot of pop records in the 90's (most notably Lou Reed's New York) and made these two duet and trio records with some interesting combinations of people. |
![]() |
![]() Apparently this was not really recorded at a beach party, but it was live. |

Some of this has a ring of Jacques Tati soundtrack to it, "Les Vacances de M. Hulot," in particular.
![]() |
![]() I lke a lot of songs on the Duets album. Some, not so much. I have Trios, too. But the concept was getting old to me. Did Wasserman make it to Octets? |
![]() |
