Hello Jeffrey, CJ & Herb.
The Dennis Taylor track had me thinking it was the intro to John Stewarts's Some Lonesome Picker.

BW's birthday today. Who thought he would survive this long, still playing.

Ah Martin Stone, later to form Chili Willy & the Red Hot Peppers with Phil Lithman. Great live band.

Mighty Baby had 2 lives of course -- the first as the band that issued one the most stunning psychedelic prog albums of all time ("Mighty Baby") and the second as purveyors of stoned/mystical folk ("A Jug of Love"). The first has some of the gnarliest lead guitar work of the era.

I spun some Band last Sunday and this week on fmu I've heard them a bunch. Something in the air perhaps

Funny, just re-read Greil Marcus' essay on the Band from Mystery Train. Got me listening to them like it was the first time. Three great voices.

Rock of Ages was re-issued in 2013 with a new Bob Clearmountain mix. What a live band.

Rocks of Ages is what I was spinning. 2 LP set that I got for real cheap a few years back.

Have been listening & has been grand for a Sat. morn - As Ever - Thx DJ JD.

Mark:

Count me as a fan of the Band, too. They tapped into something very ancient and very timeless at the same time. A truly special group. They really didn't make that many albums when you think about it. Probably a few more than they should have, truth be told. But "Big Pink," "The Band" and "Rock of Ages" are all masterpieces. And I'll watch the "Last Waltz" any time it comes on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am
Mike East:

well stated, Mark. I definitely went through a period where I was watching the last waltz several times a week.

Jack:

My friend kept telling me the Band was the best American rock&roll band ever, but we'd go see them and they would suck (even with Dylan at MSG) Then finally I saw them in Westchester and they were amazing. My friend was right.

See you next week. Nice show today.
