Listener comments!

  9:03pm
Listener Robert:

Are you going to have a video feed from the studio at the end again?
  9:04pm
Listener Robert:

If so, I encourage listeners to watch, because it shows some interesting technical things about how studio DJing is done -- rather different from live event DJing.
  9:08pm
Listener Robert:

For instance, you may have wondered how they get the start of a cut off an LP to start with such good timing, without either a needle drop or a wow.
  9:19pm
Listener Robert:

Gee, I guess everyone's waiting w baited breath, so I'll explain what I saw last time. It's almost like a magic trick:

There are 2 turntables. The record is screw-clamped via a cap to the spindle of 1, so no slippage is possible. The turntables have an electrically-engaged clutch xmission. With it in neutral, Mr. Byrne manually positions the needle to the desired point as he listens. Then when he wants to, he switches the audio output to that needle & engages the clutch at the desired speed. Meanwhile he has the other turntable to do the same on, so no waiting. Meanshile he's also getting advice from someone whose name I forgot as to selection. Of course one or the other of them must also work in the Accu-Play listing, and someone has to mind Jub Jub, the dog.

...lovin' the Harry Revel - & all these other hairy revelations...
  9:28pm
Listener Robert:

The Accu-Play is itself something of a wonder, credited to Kenzo DB. It operates on the same principle as blogging software, in that in its normal mode a local file is generated, appended to whatever's already up, & re-uploaded sequentially. However, the DJ can also edit already-existing lines in the table to upload. These go into the left frame. You don't get to see the product as HTML, because it's script-based.
  9:30pm
Listener Robert:

With the scripting comes auto-refresh, simultaneously the boon & the bane of the playlist reader.
  9:32pm
Listener Robert:

I hope we're going to find out whether the Wax Darts have any relationship to the Tuff Darts.
  9:44pm
JakeGould:

@ListenerRobert: How do lightbulbs work?
  9:48pm
Listener Robert:

They work better than tonight's running gag, that's how.

Mr. Byrne, I do have to admit I LOL at the "35" from backstage.

And I like this sketch. For reals.

“Really more of a bee hoarder than a bee keeper…” FUNNY!

Ana Fabrega's set was insane and brilliant. I don't really know what was going on, but I really liked it.

  11:31pm
Listener Robert:

Yay! I liked best the annr. repairman gag. It reminds me of a bit I did like it in Theater Arts class in 7th or 8th grade, but yours was better.

I like to stick it all night with PB.
Avatar 11:39pm
Pat Byrne:

Thanks Cooh! And thanks everybody!
  11:43pm
Listener Robert:

Come to think of it, a lot of really big stuff in entertainment has its genesis in DIY. A play I was in ~50 yrs. ago, written by an upperclassman, "The Best Life", used the gimmick that would later wow 'em in "Saw".
  11:47pm
Listener Robert:

And if you've seen the YouTube of the school players cracking into the orchestra pit in Indiana, know that when I was getting ready to do a run-thru of my aforementioned stand-up bit, a classmate whose turn was before mine got too close to the edge, and it hinged over & vaulted him over the orchestra pit into the 2nd row.
  11:47pm
JakeGould:

@ListenerRobert: Every form of art has come from DIY which then is “industrialized” by a larger industry. Ever really think how superficially ridiculous basic recording of audio/video is but what piles of nonsense surround it when major companies created industries around those basic things?
  11:50pm
Listener Robert:

Yes, JG, even if I never thought about that before, I could stand to be reminded of it.

Then there was my friend David Lindelof (father of "Lost" show runner Damon), long before I knew him, while a college student, used the concept that just a few yrs. later would be used by Mel Brooks as "Springtime for Hitler".
  11:55pm
JakeGould:

@ListenerRobert: FWIW, the reason many TV shows and other places have a “no submissions” policy is partially to avoid the deluge of submissions, but from a legal standpoint if someone submits an idea to a show that is similar to an idea they execute on the show in some way, the person who submitted the work can claim payment, royalties or damages. FunFact™!
  11:58pm
Cooh John:

O-H-I-O
  11:58pm
Listener Robert:

Actually I know a bit about the law on such things. It's the reason why companies that DO accept submissions for inventions, etc., in many cases have you sign a waiver of your rights. That's supposedly how Bill Gates got his foot in the door: a competitor looked at that form from IBM, took it seriously, and decided not to submit. Bill Gates trusted them enough to sign his rights away, in effect.
  12:00am
Listener Robert:

Yay again, Mr. Byrne.
  12:01am
JakeGould:

Signing a waiver and then submitting is different from an unsolicited submission.
