Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Matt F:

Oh yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
listener james from westwood:

True weird story: In 3rd grade, the music teacher took some sort of shine to (a) this song and (b) one of the students, which culminated in a school assembly in which said student, dressed as King Tut, was wheeled by the music teacher into the gym on an Egypt-decorated ... thing of some sort (the rack we stored folding chairs on w/ some cardboard to make it look like a boat?) with this song playing. The guy then conducted a mock interview about Tut with the lad. Also, a bunch of K-5th graders were implicitly introduced to the word "honky."

In summary, the 70s were a time of many contrasts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
Amanda:

WOW to that story. AMAZING!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
listener james from westwood:

I really wish I'd been with it enough to document those years. Grade school in the 70s was comparatively batshit in a number of ways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Amanda:

As well, a certain type of 70s cool dad or cool teacher REALLY latched onto Steve Martin's whole thing, in a big way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm

This Rainer Maria is right in Amanda's range, no?

Glad you appreesh, Kurt and UM! Kurt, you are right, this album and a lot of the mid-late 80s ones are super-worth-revisiting

Lovely show, but now I''m craving a nice salad of field greens and yellow daisies, for some reason...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Rich in Washington:

last time I saw them had to be 20 years ago, on some tour supporting a crap Green Day-of-the-week band, sponsored by a local radio station that would never in a 100 years play New Bomb Turks - along with Rev. Horton Heat, Lunachicks, a few more bands. It was really apparent that many of the bands hated one another.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Matt F:

Nice! Hey, maybe you know already but that Plimsouls track earlier in the set is an Easybeats cover. Or maybe a cover of a song that the Easybeats covered. Stop playing good records so I can leave the house, please.
  12:59pm
P-90:

And yeah, I should stop thinking about revisiting Elvis's eighties output and just do it already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm

THAT IS MANSPLAINING, MATT

That RM album came out in 2001, not mansplaining
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm

Aha. I knew it was around then, MB$, thanks! A godsend during that weird time of top 40 rock being horrible
  1:11pm

That album made me like them, which was funny because it seemed like their older fans hated it

if you like, well maybe not .... like.... 70s variety shows you have to check out Redundant Variety Hour blog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm

Because Bobby Vinton had a variety show in that era that I watched, I named a stuffed rabbit my uncle won me at a fair Bobby Vinton.

I don't know who was more warped by that era, me or the King Tut kid.

I can only imagine it has that nadir, that dark 9th-circle of 70s-special hell, the Star Wars Holiday Special.
Avatar 1:40pm

I remember that compilation album that had the Andrews Sisters on it. They'd advertise it during syndicated sitcom reruns, and the VO guy shouted "It's V-E Day!" like a seven year old kid in the 80s knew what the hell that was...
Avatar 1:42pm

my favorite variety clips are the European TV ones because they are an extra level of WHAAAAAAAT

i actually got to play one of these early Moog semi-modulars at my old job... it was the most beautiful looking thing, best part was it didn't have LEDs but big red LAMPS all over it blinking away
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm

Due to reasons beyond my control, I am currently unable to listen to the stream. I see talk about the Monkees and now the theme from their TV show is playing in my head.

there's a great photo of him playing the synth with his cat

Ah, I just remembered what Troy McClure says. It's "SPINOFF! Is there any word more soothing to the human soul?"
