Listener Robert:

What's a doctette? A group playing on a dock?
Avatar 9:02pm
Van in DC:

Who was that? Sounded like that guy from Ice Road Truckers, the really angry guy?

Anyways, welcome back Irene!

Thanks for having Julie in!!!!
Avatar 9:06pm
Van in DC:

Enjoyed all the pics, thanks

Irene Trudel:

HI Robert and Van! Good to be back, and thanks so much to Julie for filling in. Glad you liked the photos. There are lots more of my Newport Jazz Festival photos on Flickr. Just click on the picture of Scott Robinson's Doctette. Robert, I'm not exactly sure what a Doctette, but Scott Robinson certainly has one! I've tried to decipher it from his website, and am not quite sure but I think it involves space travel (maybe spaceship docking??)
  9:20pm
P-90:

An ensemble of eight PhD's?
  9:21pm
Listener Robert:

Thanks, Irene. I got to the pix of about the 4th ensemble before I got exhausted. Remember when film was expensive so people just had a FEW vacation photos? I'm just trying to figure out what a certain colorful instrument was & how it's played, which I asked in the Flickr comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Irene Trudel:

Hmmn, P-90, that's an interesting thought.

Tommy:

I was sure the first piece you played was Brubeck ....oh well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Irene Trudel:

I know what you mean, Robert. I took so many snaps that i couldn't decide what to leave in or our. I may weed a few before too long.

Hello Irene!

I've cut my coffee intake lately...

Listener Robert:

You're also one of those people who makes me fear they're a horrible grouch IRL, because how could you always be so soothing on-mike & so happy looking on camera w/o making up for it the rest of the time?
  9:32pm
don d:

Bob Dorough opened for Nellie McKay at LPR last month-the most spry 91 year old you are likely to witness. Love his vocal contribution to Miles Davis's Sorcerer album, released in 1967, recorded in 1962. Very unusual.

What on earth is that tuba-sized sax thang - ?!
- So great to get home from Irene Trad pub Tue.s to this prgram...
  9:34pm
JakeGould:

@Irene: The “Doctette” might come from Scott Robinson’s love of the fictional character Doc Savage. www.nytimes.com...

Irene, I don't remember if Torres is on your radar (Mackenzie Scott) but she had an NPR Tiny Desk concert today.... I liked it but why is she so angry it seems like? She sings so angry lately.

good to hear you, irene! hello yoos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm

Looks like a contra bass sax
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
Irene Trudel:

Hi Jake, Don D and Revolution Rabbit! Robert, I promise you I'm not much of a grouch, although my husband may be the one person who can tell when i get angry. Jake, i think that Doc Savage reference must be it. RR, that giant sax is I believe a bass sax, but an unusually large one. Scott needs a hand truck just to drag it around! Here's a picture of Scott with the sax on the handtruck: www.flickr.com...

Folsom, that's what it is. Couldn't remember the full name of the instrument.

Really beautiful music tonight Irene. Wichita Lineman rules as a standard. (I met Bob Dorough when he attended the local stop of the Schoolhouse Rock tour in the late 90s. A great interview and a great guy.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm

There's some guy that has all those big instruments like the tubax.

Ops, the Torres was yesterday. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

So....here is Torres in that anyways

P-90:

Well, I'll be superamalgamated! It IS a reference to The Man of Bronze. As a life-long Doc fan myself, I'm fascinated to learn (via the NYT piece) that it's a Doc-themed concept album (and tour) of sorts. I will have to investigate this thoroughly now...

I like the album cover for the Doctette: www.sciensonic.net...

Now I have to buy one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm
Irene Trudel:

I unfortunately don't have Scott's latest album yet. It sold out at the festival and make take a few weeks to get one. He said the set they performed was planned for a future release. really interesting music!

Thanks for bringing the music back to us by the way. From Newport.

Listener Robert:

P-90, did you ever read anything by the author after whom Doc Savage is widely believed to be named: Richard Savage? Within the past couple yrs. I read his 1st published (said to have been his best) novel, "My Official Wife". Very enjoyable if you like travelog and a Wodehouse-like present'n wherein you as reader are way ahead of the 1st-person account.

Does FMU have a coffee maker? A kitchen? I've always kind of wondered where thirsty / hungry FMU DJ's might get relief from. Down the street maybe? Delivery? Bring it in yourself?
  10:44pm
Listener Robert:

They do have a kitchen. But no reservoir-style refillable liquid soap dispensers in either kitchen or bathroom, I'm told by Ken.
  10:47pm
Listener Robert:

If you're wondering how I know, I wanted to donate gal. jugs of this stuff -- users.bestweb.net... . Besides, they've got all those Miracle Soap cakes from several fundraisers ago.

I have FMU soap bars actually

Hey there, Irene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
Irene Trudel:

Thanks Van! BTW, as Listener Robert says, WFMU does have a coffee maker, a mini kitchen, and some local delivery joints. mostly we bring our own. Hey KP! Sorry we missed you at Damrosh Park. WAY too crowded. Did you get to see the whole Highway 61 trib.?
Avatar 11:29pm
KP:

Yes we did, Irene. They were letting people in as the nonbelievers were exiting. We got in and found seats just as Bob tribute got underway. It was enjoyable and at times thrilling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

Great! I thought it was really well done. The Watkins Family Hour was a great backing band. And I loved that they were able to get Al Kooper in on it.
