@Robert: I quite agree with you about needless big deals being made about long opening shots in films, but I never heard that phrase associated with the opening shot of Touch of Evil which not only was the longest shot in history, it was also the GREATEST single camera roll of all time. Your comment leads me to wonder if you've ever seen it? I mean, if you had, there's really little to say about it except, "Wow" or "cool."

long takes in film aren't achievements of actors, so much as the director, cinematographer, director of photography, lighting, sound, etc...many factors involved. Stage is a different thing totally. I wouldn't compare the two.

CD Toaster, I'll do you one better: I've seen the movie named for/based on (sort of) it: "Whisper of Evil", a Strathman-Lindelof prod'n in 8 mm sound & color. It's had very limited screenings. It included the 1st screen appearance of later C-SPAN macher Brian Lamb in the role of the DJ.

  1:20pm
P-90:

Just fyi film buffs, the Touch of Evil story was set in Tijuana, the locations (including the opener) were Venice, CA (beach town in Los Angeles). No one made a big deal about the long opening shot at the time, it wasn't promoted by the studio or anything. It was Welles working with a professional Holllywood crew again after years shooting on shoestring budgets in Europe. He was just enjoying doing things wth those resources, like the long credits shot. And believe it or not, while it was a challenge to himself to do it that way, it was also meant as a time and money-saving strategy; several minutes of sepearate set-ups for a title seguence would have taken longer than that one long shot, which was blocked, rehearsed, and shot pretty quickly. Welles was being creative but also showing Universal and the other studios that he could be a "good citizen" and do things economically...

  1:21pm
Listener Robert:

Well, Mike, in some cases a long take in a movie is a huge thing. I'm thinking of the one in "Gangs of New York", following the line as the immigrants enter & are processed into the armed services, then onto another ship, then the other other ship coming back w the body bags.
Avatar 1:24pm
Monica:

hi ho, annie!!! and greg from brooklyn !!! and linda lee!!!
  1:24pm

Did "Touch of Evil" have a zombie mummy like "Whisper of Evil", huh? Did it have a shot of an actual silo fire, like "Whisper of Evil"? Did it include directions to adjust the projector to compensate for when the battery in the camera got weak, like "Whisper of Evil"? I didn't think so.

P-90:

The long Touch of Evil" opener was made a celebrated thing by critics and other directors over the years. The "long, uninterrupted take" has been around for a long time, but has only been fetishized in recent decades by De Palma, Scorsese, etc. There's a notable continuous opening shot at the start of Julien Temple's 1986 "Absolute Beginners". And of course, Hitchcock's "Rope" was a feature done as a continuous shot.
  1:32pm
Listener Robert:

I know only of the shot of dinner at the long table in "Touch of Evil"; I think I might've seen the entire movie once, but it didn't impress me that much. A LOT of the movies that movie buffs rave about, especially those Orson Welles ones, don't impress me as much as others, though I've yet to see "F for Fake", which seems from its descriptions like I should enjoy it.

Welles made that shot work like an "overture" to the movie. And he makes a "cameo appearance" himself in that shot that prefigures the central arc of the story.

Listener Robert:

"Gangs of New York" had not only that long shot, but loads of other great things. The story wasn't much, but who cares? It had a great laugh that I got only after I thought about it a while: Abe Lincoln on stage when somebody else gets shot in the audience. (They must've been taking turns.) The Lewis character's lines were great, reminiscent of Leo Gorcey as Stich Mahoney. The closing montage sequence, which theoretically was a nothing, was mind-blowing. The movie was full of things that make me think about hx; when I bicycled on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, my mind was drawn to the anti-cholera spray truck in that movie.

UK here also. I fear WFMU is suffering a refugee crisis, Brit listeners swarming, what with the determined campaign to make the BBC so shit and commercial that it can be abolished without sentiment.
On this station, the fill-ins are so lovingly crafted that they keep being better than the shows they fill in for. So instant love for Monica, who I hadn't heard before.

What determines whether a music genre is a “core” versus a “wave?”
Avatar 2:42pm
Jeff:

Grindwave is the next core.
  2:43pm
JakeGould:

Wavecore = Genre.
Corewave = Something that happens on “Star Trek” where Geordi LaForge advises Captain the crew should abandon ship.

i like waves better than cores.
  2:51pm
JakeGould:

So maybe “Normcore” is a wave? Like “Normwave?” And “Sea Punk”… Wait! There are waves, cores and punks… Gotta sit down for while.
