Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from October 10, 2015 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Hey It's Hinky Dinky Time
  10:03pm
listener james from westwood:

Evening, UM! In for at least part of the Saturday night frolic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm
Uncle Michael:

duke!
James!

The moon is in the 7th house.
  10:12pm
listener james from westwood:

My mom used to play the "Hair" cast album when I was a kid, "Sodomy" track and all. Calmly but very broadly explained what the second word on the title was when I asked her. She was quite cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Uncle Michael:

How are you guys tonight?
  10:13pm
listener james from westwood:

Doing well and hoping all here are doing likewise!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Uncle Michael:

I never thought to ask. I had to learn it all on the street from my no-good friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Uncle Michael:

I had a great baseball day, James.

Erella:

I'm loving this Hair music. Thank you.
  10:30pm
listener james from westwood:

Hair supercut — heh heh heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Uncle Michael:

Welcome Erella...I'm glad you're into it!
  10:37pm
listener james from westwood:

This cut was all I could think of when they had Harry Crane doing the Krishna chant in Mad Men.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Uncle Michael:

I missed out on Mad Men. Was that payed for humor?
  10:43pm
listener james from westwood:

Nostalgia, humor, sadness, and in the end, mercy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Uncle Michael:

nice
  10:45pm
Dean:

Goddamnit. I just tuned in, having forgotten that UM has a special gig tonight. Meanwhile, I'm spinning Bruckner's 7th in the front room while I try to eke out decibels of The Retroliners, who sound nothing like the BB/WB I recall.

Double negative alert! "Ain't Got No"!

Making a couscous tonight with a mutha of a harissa.
Avatar 10:46pm
Erella:

I forgot how great these songs are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Uncle Michael:

Excellent. Welcome, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm happy to trigger the memories. The songs are very good.

Dean:

So far, I can't get behind male plumage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Uncle Michael:

I'll savor your stories later Dean. I look forward to them.
  10:57pm
Dean:

Short story shorter: "Hair" was a formative cultural event during my youth.
  11:00pm
Dean:

And now hair is a formative phenomenon in my ears and nostrils, go figure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Uncle Michael:

Boy do I hear you.
  11:04pm
Dean:

I'd love to learn that a nudist camp production of "Hair" culminated with the cast donning their costumes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Uncle Michael:

you have a subversive mind
  11:12pm
Dean:

...says the guy playing Roger Whittaker singing "Good Morning Starshine."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Uncle Michael:

heh
  11:26pm
Dean:

Curious. I much prefer local community college productions of anything to professional theater. Never thought about how "Hair" might fare. To my mind, being "genuine" has nothing to do with superior thespian performance. Which is why I simply can't stomach film.

Yes, I did know Idris Muhammad was in the band.

"Hair" arrived when I was in third grade. A peer of mine attended at the Shubert in LA. His family was ... well ahead of and well behind the times.
  11:26pm
Meghan:

good evening!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Uncle Michael:

A 2015 production of Hair might as well be Grease...it's playing dress-up. Hair wasn't that in 1969.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Uncle Michael:

I wonder if there's an *actual* ska version of Love is Strange.
  11:32pm
Dean:

I'm partial to Paul and Linda's, I'm sorry to admit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Uncle Michael:

I like it too. I find the ska beat the most interesting thing about Ceaser and Cleo's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am
Uncle Michael:

I really like this Brave Belt track.
  12:11am
Dean:

The fuck? "Maybe Tomorrow" was originally The Iveys?
  12:15am
Dean:

Trivia: Brave Belt almost went by Timid Cravat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17am
Uncle Michael:

You just made that up!
  12:20am
Dean:

Here I sit, stone throwing distance from El Cerrito and Fantasy Records on Ninth Street here in Berkeley. I pass it all the time, and man, do I wonder about who has put down tracks there. CCR, Bill Evans, the original Timid Cravat...
  12:22am
Dean:

Little known fact: Blink 182 toured and recorded a demo for years before making it big. They went by Blink 181.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am
Uncle Michael:

They were never going to make it with that lame name. Ask Matchbox 19.
  1:00am
Dean:

Okay, it's late, I'm tired, and so I must vent. I simply don't understand the general affection for Steely Dan, nor for ABBA. Neither "moves" me. Let me add one more, to me, puzzling so-called artist: Elvis Costello. I just don't get it. Everything I hear from these musicians sounds phoned-in to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02am
Uncle Michael:

That's ok. I hope you don't mind that I'll never forgo any of them.
  1:03am
Dean:

No hate! Really.
  1:05am
Dean:

Moroder? Love his stuff, unequivocally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09am
Uncle Michael:

I find that ABBA record very Moroderesque. See you next time Dean and lurkers! Thank you!
