Live performance and chat by Julia Kent

On "Asperities," the fourth solo album by acclaimed Canadian cellist Julia Kent, the theme of conflict creeps into her music. The word "asperity" means a roughness or sharpness of temper/conditions and Kent says, "As the title suggests, this is a record born of conflict: internal, personal and global." Julia creates these musical conflicts by looping cello, effects and found sound. Julia Kent performed some of these pieces live for the WFMU listeners.

is this a re-make of 'from the air'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Irene Trudel:

Oh, she does, bob. Very sweet but very insistent that I give her lots of attention. Head-butting is her thing. Paul, good catch This is a re-working of "From the Air" for a new film of Laurie's that opens tomorrow in NYC.

Nope, Paul, it's all just me engineering and typing while Julia plays here.

Homemade chicken soup going on the stove, guitars freshly strung, Mets leading in 7th and Irene's beautiful show cranked up on the stereo. It's a good night in Hell's Kitchen...

Mets winning right now, 3-2 top 7th
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Irene Trudel:

Hi Summer & Michael! Thanks for the Mets update!
  10:16pm
Van in DC:

Is Julia Kent influenced at all by any classical artists? Just curious.
  10:18pm
Van in DC:

Oh, and I'm sure this is probably a rhetorical question - Irene, have you been adopted yet? Probably by tens of billions....
  10:21pm
Van in DC:

Perfect sense Julia. Thanks!

Love the Julia Kent

Van, we only do the DJ adoptions in our March fundraiser. Adopters get rights for a whole year. Same with the pet mascots. By the Way, Kevin Kastning will be live next week with guitarist Sandor Szabo, who is visiting from Budapest.
Avatar 11:11pm
Van in DC:

Ah okay thanks. I get mixed up on adoptions. Look forward to next week!

Good morning Irene, hello one and all
  11:32pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Irene Trudel:

Hey Sean! Glad to have you even this late. I haven't seen the game, but the Mets won!!!
  11:32pm
Van in DC:

SEAN!

You're late.

HI!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Irene Trudel:

I should say, early, Sean. Isn't it about 4:30am UK time?
  11:36pm
Van in DC:

October by the way is just brutal for asking for money. WETA, the classical musical station I really love here, also is commercial-free, and listener supported. And yep, October is their big begging month as well. Sigh.
  11:37pm
Van in DC:

Holy mackerel, RENAISSANCE!

Hey Jake & redkayak! Nice to have you here, even late in the show.Gonna say good night now. Remember, next week is a short show-- starting at 10pm-- but we'll have Kevin Kastning & Sandor Szabo right at the the top to maximize time.
  11:53pm
Van in DC:

Is that how you know you made it as a recording artist? When people start comparing other artists to you? I imagine that would be the height of ego.
