Time for my third Crunch Time show of 2015! Crunch Time is we at WFMU are calling our Silent Fundraiser this year, and I've put together another special show to remind you of how awesome WFMU is (not to mention my show in particular! right?!), and hopefully to motivate you to pledge.

This week is Singles Going Steady Week on WFMU, and tonight I'm bringing you Singles Going Seventies! The program will be limited to singles released from 1970 through 1979 (inclusive) -- but as regular listeners know, this really isn't much of a limitation at all! Saddle up for sassy 7" releases from the seventies: from disco to pop to punk to rock (classic and otherwise) to AM gold, whether it was in the Top 40 or just Bubbling Under you'll hear it all!

Now, because this is a SILENT fundraiser I won't be talking about it much at all during my show which means I'm depending on the written word to convince you to PLEASE PLEDGE! This is the time of year when the money we raised during our 2015 fundraising marathon starts to dry up, and the 2016 marathon is still several long months away, so any help you can offer would be amazing.

If you've already pledged, THANK YOU! Your support is greatly appreciated. If not,
P L E A S E   P L E D G E   N O W !

Stay tuned for more special shows this month, and of course please take a moment to Like The Evan "Funk" Davies Show on Facebook and follow me on Twitter! Thank you.!

  Wed. 10/21/15 9:08pm Joe R.:

"Smoke from a Distant Fire" - recognized this right away yet it's entirely possible that I haven't heard this song since it hit in '77 (I had to look that up naturally)

ohh yes

  Wed. 10/21/15 9:54pm Linda Lee:

what's amazing me this week is how well these old 45s held up, in general. most everything i'm hearing sounds really great! no warp & wear at all.
  Wed. 10/21/15 9:54pm Linda Lee:

haven't heard anything from the back of a cereal box yet ..
  Wed. 10/21/15 9:55pm Lord Gamblor:

I would have given tonight, but Man City scored in the last minute and spoiled my bet that they wouldn't. Thankfully I won on Real Madrid as I bet they'd tie with Pars St Germain. A good night with $100 profit, but not enough for me to start throwing it around. Well done Mr Ghould.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Wed. 10/21/15 9:55pm Barkevious Shabazz:

In the limited universe of songs with handclaps all the way thru, Maxine Nightengale's is pretty much the best.
Avatar Wed. 10/21/15 9:55pm JakeGhould:

Also, old school 45s were pretty much engineered to sound god on average to bad sound systems like crappy car stereos or even AM radios. So to me that makes them really pop out.
  Wed. 10/21/15 9:56pm Tommy Vance:

Hey, you're playing my theme tune!
Avatar Wed. 10/21/15 9:56pm JakeGhould:

evan, what else have you got in store for us tonight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Wed. 10/21/15 9:56pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The station is at 52% of the goal of $200,000 and the month is like 2/3 over. The cash needs to flow in at a higher rate to achieve the goal.
  Wed. 10/21/15 9:56pm Linda Lee:

really true!

  Wed. 10/21/15 10:03pm Spoony:

@SlapShotZero, wait, was that the song they were all drunkenly dancing to in that nightclub?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/21/15 10:03pm efd:

Novelty records were the memes of their day.
Avatar Wed. 10/21/15 10:04pm JakeGhould:

“Yes, and I am adding these Jaws singles to the record changer…”
Avatar Wed. 10/21/15 10:05pm BadGhostZero:

@Spoony: The song was played just about every time the bus is shown driving to another town.
  Wed. 10/21/15 10:05pm P-90:

I have zero memory of either of those Jaws tracks, but me like!
Avatar Wed. 10/21/15 10:06pm BadGhostZero:

I was expecting Dickie Goodman's "Mr. Jaws." A kid that lived down the street from me when I was a kid had that record.

"you hear me knockin, baby? let's play Land Shark!"
Avatar Wed. 10/21/15 10:07pm JakeGhould:

  Wed. 10/21/15 10:08pm cheri:

evan I've heard about that! btw evan, do you have "the time warp"?

I have a Star Wars Christmas single. The a-side is "What Can You Get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb?)" and "R2-D2, We Wish You A Merry Christmas" is on the flip side.

TRIVIA: Jon Bon Jovi's first appearance on a record was vocals on "R2-D2, We Wish You A Merry Christmas."

“What Can You Get a Wookie for Christmas?” A nice jacket. I never see Wookie’s wearing nice clothes. Always that bandolier and what’s that for? Snacks?

@P-90: Ammo for what? Chewbacca uses a laser crossbow. What kind of ammo does that need? Think about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/21/15 10:16pm steve:

had to look up the BASF label - "The record label run by German chemical company BASF, started financing recordings of classical music in the 1930s and started making stereo recordings in the early 1940s."

i'll be careful,evan, but it's a killer show tonight!
  Wed. 10/21/15 10:22pm Linda Lee:

yes, weird. also weird how the guitar line sounds just like a sample!
  Wed. 10/21/15 10:23pm john:

I'll suggest there is more than one unintentionally weird thing about this record, but that one hadn't occurred to me.

Fun Fact: This will be the first World Series ever that does not feature one of the 16 original Major League Baseball Franchises.

At least one of:
Braves, Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Giants, Indians, Tigers, Reds, A's, Phillies, Cubs, White Sox, Pirates, Cardinals, Senators (now Twins), Browns (now Orioles) has been in every World Series up until now.

That Rubicon song a little while ago was kind of nice.
Wed. 10/21/15 11:14pm daveB from Oakland:

this song has elements of Jackson 5's "ABC". And some messed up lyrics
Avatar Wed. 10/21/15 11:15pm glenn:

another weird, and somewhat unbelievable, bit of sports trivia - until this year, the montreal canadiens had never started a season 5 - 0.

@daveb, once you really start hearing some of these lyrics it's .. unbelievable.

@daveB from Oakland: Yeah, that track was rip-off weirdo.

it's been absolutely decades since i've heard this blackfoot sue & i really like it much better than i should. for such a clear beatles/hendrix derivative it's really clean & nice.

hey folks, just another plug to give if you can during this "Crunch Time" silent fundraiser (and mascot contest!). I'd love to go into next week's show with something more than 55% of my monthly goal. And many thanks to everyone who's already pledged!

The chorus of the Streak song reminds me of that Scottish band from the early 2000s called the 1990s who, you know, sound like a '70s band.
