Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from February 9, 2016 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Cliff:

"Ēostre or Ostara (Old English: Ēastre, Northumbrian dialect Ēostre; Old High German: *Ôstara (reconstructed form)) is a Germanic divinity who, by way of the Germanic month bearing her name (Northumbrian: Ēosturmōnaþ; West Saxon: Ēastermōnaþ; Old High German: Ôstarmânoth), is the namesake of the festival of Easter. Ēostre is attested solely by Bede in his 8th-century work The Reckoning of Time, where Bede states that during Ēosturmōnaþ (the equivalent of April), pagan Anglo-Saxons had held feasts in Eostre's honor, but that this tradition had died out by his time, replaced by the Christian Paschal month, a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus."

Lyle:

We had just finished a gig in Blue Earth. I suppose it must have been one in the morning. I was 3rd bone with Dorsey's band, and most of them were asleep on the bus. Tommy and I were awake, though, and we were hungry. So we pulled into this trout farm which was, of course, closed at that late hour. Over the fence we went with a couple of the cane poles we always kept in the cargo hold for just such an occasion. We dug up a couple of fat earthworms, which was easy as it had recently rained, and before you know it we each landed a nice trout. We tried to skidaddle out of there but a policeman met us in the parking lot and we thought were going to jail. Luckily, he was a big Tommy Dorsey fan, and after Tommy played a few bars of The Dipsy Doodle and signed an autograph, that policeman let us go on our merry way, trout and all!

I understand why you would doubt my authenticity. After all, most of the boys I remember from those days have been in the ground for years. Funny that Mr. Turner played the Blondie combo. Someday I'll tell you about the time a pretty young gal named Debby Harry sang with us when I was in Guy Lombardo's band in Hackettstown, NJ. Centenary College, I think that was the gig. Anyway, she was a shy thing, as I recall. She had to be pushed onstage by her beatnik-looking friends. Guy was growing increasingly irritated in those days by his inability to cross-over with the younger set, so he wasn't patient with her. I had to tug his sleeve and wink at him, giving him a "calm down" look. Debby ended up singing a passable version of Sammy Cahn's arrangement of Herman's Hermits, "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter." The crowd loved her. Guy called the gig early and told us to get on the bus. He was silent all the way to Poughkeepsie, but then he lightened up. He was like that. Moody.

I enjoy your programming Brian. Some of it is a little raucous for my taste, but I like hearing what the young folks are up to these days. I also enjoy reading the comments of your loyal listeners. Good bye for now. Keep swingin'!
