This music is transporting me to somewhere not here. Thanks for the ticket.
Avatar 9:41am

@Marty-WOW, I just love CAN, and read up on them on Wikipedia and had no idea they existed until now. Thank you! Up there with Bevis Frond on my list of must gets.
  9:43am

my favorite marathon appeal: "Hey you asshole hipsters, we schooled your ass in Can"
  9:44am
Cliff:

Bwahaha, somebody actually said that during a marathon?!
Avatar 9:45am
Wild Neil:

@Bill-I consider myself schooled although not a hipster. Hey Bill, can you please clue me on the "new wave" thing? I know new wave came out in the late 70's early 80's but not sure what you are getting at. Please help me understand.

yes! on Diane's show - I got the feeling it's ok to take off the gloves there

WN - "new wave" was kind of a catch all for anything not strictly mainstream, like "alternative" in the 90s
  9:49am
MONEYBAG$:

Pretty sure I exposed one of the DJs there to Can, not naming names
Avatar 9:50am
bobdoesthings:

hi marcel
  9:50am
Brendan:

Wow just had a musical deja vu revelation . Talk about influence. The progression, rhythm and solo of the first guitar solo of Porcupine Tree's track Anesthetize is SERIOUSLY influenced by that Can track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am
Marcel M:

BOB!

Neil, I'm jealous of your Can Virginity. Discovering them for me was an awakening I'll never forget.
  9:51am
Cliff:

Later on I think New Wave got redefined to just mean Talking Heads, Blondie, etc., poppy not-quite-punk bands, and early Cabaret Voltaire got stuck in with Industrial
Avatar 9:52am
Wild Neil:

@Bill-OK! Yeah, I remember back when Beck's "Loser" was playing-simultaneously-on my car radio in Atlantic City, NJ both on Stockton State's radio station (college radio) AND the local rock station. At that point "alternative" had, perhaps, jumped the shark. 1993.
  9:52am
Cliff:

Marty, it cracks me up listening to you talk about the places you eat at :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am
Marcel M:

Yeah the Jesus thing at In n Out is really weird.
  9:53am

Love how you can serendipitously find a predecessor/ influence to something you love and that becomes the new avenue. Thanks MM

DAGNABBIT. Missed Can... Saw Delight is usually ranked poorly among the smarty-pants crowd, but it's got solid winners. It was among the first CAN sounds I ever heard (so long ago), therefore...

I think the movie "Liquid Sky" was "New Wave" in some respects....
@Marcel-I am so SURPISED by some of the music I hear on WFMU some days...just EYE OPENING like the first time I heard King Crimson back in 85 or so...
Avatar 9:54am
bobdoesthings:

ahhh! sound is only in Right headphone! I feel like i'm going to tip over
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am

I can appreciate the later Can stuff more now than when I first discovered them. I was so into the early stuff, when I threw on the later stuff I was like, "the fuck?" But now I can get down with it more.

Las Cruces NM had this goofy, dirty place called Golden Bull that would sometimes make me sick but we ALL LOVED IT no matter...their burgers were pure heaven on earth.
@Marcel-I now REALLY like EARLY King Crimson over their stuff with Adrian Belew. Its all awesome, I just like it better.
