Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from March 22, 2016 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Lyle:

Sonic Youth, eh? I recall quite clearly one November morning in 1975. I was on the road with a reconfigured (smaller for monetary reasons) Ralph Marterie Orchestra. Not quite sure where we were. Somewhere upstate in New York. Phonecia, I believe it was. At any rate, the bus was not functioning properly. At cruising speed it worked quite well, but when it was idling, it made a high whining kind of sound - just the type of pitch that could quickly drive a busload of men to madness. Ralph was particularly incensed as he mercilessly berated the bus repairman that had been dispatched to the scene. About that time I noticed a young man skulking around on the periphery of the mechanical work that was happening. He had a little beigh Mayfair tape recorder in hand and he was documenting the sound of the enfeebled bus. Turns out he was a boy called Thirsty Moore. Later, he would go by the more sophisticated moniker of Thurston, and he would incorporate the sound of our troubled bus into part of the random noise utilized on Sonic Youth's "Bad Moon Rising" record. Funny how things work out.

Lyle:

Thanks, Lopez. You just reminded me of the time I spent a few days with Trini Lopez' band. I think we were in California, but after all these years, dates and places get all mixed together in my mind. I do recall that Trini had an affinity for Zagnut bars! It wasn't uncommon for him to eat seven or eight of them a day, and often we would have to stop at a gas station or a candy store for him to bolster his supply. One night we were just leaving Palo Alto, on our way north to a one-nighter in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Trini realized he was out of Zagnut bars and he became visibly upset. So much so that when the union bus driver refused to stop the bus citing regulations about frequency of stops and unreasonable artist demands, Trini took one of his guitars (a Fender coronado?) and smashed it in the aisle of the bus! A splinter from the guitar lodged in Mickey Jones forehead. Mickey was our drummer who would also play with Bob Dylan. Well, Mickey took trini by the lapels and proceeded to slap him about the neck and head a few times before he got off at the next stop and quit the band. Trini never mentioned this event again, nor did he eat another Zagnut bar. The stress of the road made many musicians do foolish things. Still does, I guess.
