@JeffG - I enjoyed D:O Radio (including bonus hour) on Sunday. Was errand running so didn't get a chance to comment on board. P.S. I laughed at your wife comment about giving your listeners an Easter treat with one less hour of music. Cruel!

wow, that Tom Brady track was something else. didn't realize he recorded Instruments of Happiness - must've been during offseason? OH WAIT, /TIM/ Brady. (Tom's cousin, presumably.)

Avatar 12:22pm

Instruments of Happiness is the name of the guitar ensemble that performs this Antoine Berthiaume track and the thing by Tim Brady heard earlier. The group is Canadian and was founded by Brady.

Listening!
Avatar 12:26pm

Both this Berthiaume and the Brady sort of seem like an extension of the sound of proggy guitarists like Steve Hackett or Steve Howe.

@ Dean - cool! The live experience is top notch - perfect balance of solo and lesser-played Genesis faves this time out.
  12:34pm
gerardo:

Phlemish enough for a Mort Subite ? bont think so
  12:35pm

I thought the full quotation was, "Nothing is inevitable except death, taxes, and platitudes."

@ Cecile: Surprise were from Saint Louis, MO. They only put out that one album.
Avatar 1:30pm

wow, that guitar player had a great European folk flavor to his solos. I usually only hear that stuff IME in European bands and such.

Guido from Cologne:

Hi Tony!
Funny I just switch in!
There is a great version of "Gelin Aysem" by singer Alpay from 1965 which I have.
this sounds like a prog-re-treatment.
Avatar 1:31pm
Cecile:

that's really cool. That's why I tune in and post here. Another new lead in the mystery of music.

Is this Grow Fins set, uh, worth a deep dive?
Avatar 1:46pm
Cecile:

yes, Jeff it is. It also has some super rare live footage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
Jeff Golick:

Oh, thanks, @Cecile. I've had it in my sights for years now, but never took the plunge.
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

I think it definitely is worth a listen -- particularly if you don't have any Beefheart boots. There's a lot of overlap with earlier boots -- although, of course, the sound quality is better on Grow Fins.
Avatar 1:48pm
Cecile:

I bought it like the week it came out. What Tony said, and also the packaging is gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Guido from Cologne:

"Grow Fins: Rarities" is great for the booklet, which tells all about the starving band and the misstreatment of John French.
Avatar 1:52pm
Cecile:

yes, that part of it makes me sad.
Avatar 1:53pm

Oops -- this track is not in fact from 1871 (you'd never guess). Will fix in a sec.

Avatar 2:20pm

It's really, really good, Jeff. You've gotta get it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm

Ok, then. It's a very reasonable (almost criminally so) $6.49 download at emusic.

Criminally reasonable...I can get behind that.
