Listener comments!

  Sun. 4/10/16 8:46am Mark R:

Still don't know what "Congliptious" means. It's a great album, though, and the expanded CD issue especially so.
Avatar Sun. 4/10/16 8:59am duke:

Congliptious is a perfectly cromulent word
Avatar Sun. 4/10/16 8:59am hyde:

for me, Congliptous just means music that a cat hates because my cat is always put off by the beginning of DO radio
  Sun. 4/10/16 9:00am Gary:

Morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:01am Jeff Golick:

Hey earlybirds @Mark R, @duke, and @hyde. Hard to argue with @duke's assessment. Also, my cat is put off my just about everything.

And Gary's here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:01am Jeff Golick:

Grabbing a cup of coffee from the kitchen; back in a sec.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:03am Jeff Golick:

I also agree with @Mark's view of the record!
Avatar Sun. 4/10/16 9:04am holland oats:

d:o! nice
Avatar Sun. 4/10/16 9:05am hyde:

i guess it wouldn't be any fun being a cat if you weren't getting put off by just about everything
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:08am doctorjazz:

Hi all.
Avatar Sun. 4/10/16 9:10am hyde:

i think probably that cool people should just stop dying. i mean enough, already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:11am doctorjazz:

This sounds like it will give the cat an excuse to act out...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:12am Jeff Golick:

Hey hey, Mr. @oats!
Hello, hellooo, @doctorjazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:13am Jeff Golick:

Our cat doesn't seem to have much fun at all. These days she's embroiled in a long term war with some pipe cleaners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:13am Jeff Golick:

@hyde: AGREED.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:16am doctorjazz:

Ozzie, my labradoodle, just hides under the bed in moments like this (or joins my wife, who hides on another floor). Or, to keep the peace, it generally calls for headphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:19am Jeff Golick:

I'm surprised Ozzie will wear headphones.

{ba-zing!)
  Sun. 4/10/16 9:19am Gary:

Is this music prior to tortoises or prior to dreams?
  Sun. 4/10/16 9:20am Gary:

*their dreams
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:20am Uncle Michael:

I gotta make breakfast but I'll be back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:20am Jeff Golick:

I think it's what tortoises listen to before dreaming?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:21am Jeff Golick:

Morning' @UM! D:O Radio will be here waiting, droning on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:21am Uncle Michael:

And I'll be making right hash of things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Eggscellent.
  Sun. 4/10/16 9:23am Mark R:

Cats are just fuckers, man. If you don't dig the music, move out!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:30am doctorjazz:

It's tough getting the ear buds on Ozzie...and he's very fashion conscious when it comes to over ear cans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:34am Jeff Golick:

...and here's a very good piece on Conrad, on the occasion of a show at the Walker Art Center: www.walkerart.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:46am doctorjazz:

Think I need to add something to MY headphones, tame the highs here...man, this can melt your brain (which is what is intended, of course). Sounds like it could be written for bagpipes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:48am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, tad buzzy on the high end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:49am Jeff Golick:

Fair warning: we're about a third of the way into Four Violins. It's gonna run until about ten past the hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:55am doctorjazz:

Good thing violin playing doesn't require breath control.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 9:56am Jeff Golick:

Speaking of: Evan Parker coming up later in the show...
Avatar Sun. 4/10/16 9:57am hyde:

ok, gang. need to light out on my annoying 3 hour commute back to upstate ny. catch the rest via archive. have a good day, music peoples.

Here's that Hinky Dinky Time Merle show link: wfmu.org...
  Sun. 4/10/16 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for the adding the link, Jeff. I am at work and on my "device."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 10:30am doctorjazz:

The Kevin Norton Has a bit of a Tristano feel, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 10:31am doctorjazz:

The theme, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Yah, I can feel that, @doctorjazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 10:37am Jeff Golick:

Of course, @Doug. I was also yakking during the break about how great that show was.
  Sun. 4/10/16 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

I played Tristano's "Descent into the Maelstrom" on Friday's show. What a brilliant piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 10:45am Jeff Golick:

Ethan Iverson wrote about Tristano and "Descent" for the old D:O blog, just fyi: destination-out.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 10:46am Uncle Michael:

Thanks for linking to the Merle show. I have to get out into the yard. I'm going to take you wit on the app.
  Sun. 4/10/16 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

Yes indeed. I dug that muchly. Gotta go back to work. I am "in the coolers" all day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 10:48am Jeff Golick:

Happy to be in your hip pocket, @UM.
@Doug: you're already cooler than cool, so...redundant.
  Sun. 4/10/16 10:49am Dean:

OED on "congliptious": Did you mean "conceptious"? "Likely to conceive; fertile, receptive." Some guy named Shakespeare used it. What's fun is the suffix, "-ious": "with sense ‘characterized by, full of’." Compare "-uous": "with the sense ‘of the nature of, consisting of’."

Rightious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 10:52am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that, @Dean. C'mon in. Maybe leave your OED on that shelf there.
  Sun. 4/10/16 10:55am Dean:

Had to look that up, too. Shelf: "A slab of wood (or other material) fixed in a horizontal position to a wall, or in a frame, to hold books, vessels, ornaments, etc.; one of the transverse boards in a bookcase, cabinet, or the like."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 10:57am Jeff Golick:

What do they got on "drawer." I kind of hate that word. So mushy.
  Sun. 4/10/16 11:00am Dean:

Heh, I was gonna get all cocky and just posit without looking, "One who draws." That is indeed the entry that first appears. I think you're interested in this one: "A box-shaped receptacle, fitting into a space in a cabinet or table, so that it can be drawn out horizontally in order to get access to it." From the verb, "To cause (anything) to move toward oneself by the application of force; to pull."
Avatar Sun. 4/10/16 11:03am glenn:

speaking of drawers, anybody want to buy one of my dovetail jigs?
  Sun. 4/10/16 11:08am Dean:

CIMP sound thin?! I'll have to compare that one to other CIMPs that are nearly ideal, sonically speaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:10am Andrew Waterloo:

good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:12am Jeff Golick:

@Dean: might just be my rip...

@glenn: Pass on the dovetail jigs, but happy to have you here!

@Andrew Waterloo: Good good morning to you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:13am Andrew Waterloo:

another music festival recovery day for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:17am Jeff Golick:

@AW: which one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:19am Andrew Waterloo:

a Guelph indie fest called Kazoo, some of the non local highlights were Yonatan Gat, Kid Millions with Jim Sauter, and Not the Wind, No the Flag.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:19am Jeff Golick:

Whoa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:20am Jeff Golick:

Am thinking that Evan Parker might not feature on this part of Kirchin's four-part WwW opus. He's certainly more prominent on parts 1 & 2. Ah well.
  Sun. 4/10/16 11:21am Dean:

Sure wish I could make it to Guelph one of these days.

I wonder if Supertramp got the idea for including kids at the outset of "Crime of the Century" from this Kirchin. Seems unlikely, but maybe not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:24am Andrew Waterloo:

Guelph Jazz Festival is top notch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:25am Jeff Golick:

Haven't tried 'em, but these links seem recent enough to be live: inconstantsol.blogspot.com... (Kirchin's Worlds within Worlds 1 &2.
  Sun. 4/10/16 11:26am Dean:

I knew Ajay. Haven't talked to him in years, but used to hang with him at Victoriaville.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:27am Andrew Waterloo:

Yah, I ran into him at Not the Wind Not the Flag. There's a bunch of familiar faces between Victoriaville and Guelph.
  Sun. 4/10/16 11:29am Dean:

That's great. I know he had health issues a few years ago. But the festival presses on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:30am Andrew Waterloo:

last year he took a break and the Rainbow from the Vancouver Jazz festival ws the program director.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:33am Andrew Waterloo:

Jim Sauter was just wow. He had something going on with an old fender amp and feedback.
  Sun. 4/10/16 11:33am Dean:

Had to look up Rainbow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:34am Jeff Golick:

Is it Rainbow or "the Rainbow?"
Avatar Sun. 4/10/16 11:34am glenn:

i was born in guelph, lo these many years ago.
  Sun. 4/10/16 11:37am Dean:

"I was born in Guelph..." Not quite the bluesy lilt of "I was born in Chicago..." But still, I'd love to visit.
Avatar Sun. 4/10/16 11:39am glenn:

it's a great place, outside of the ubiquitous suburban sprawl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:39am Jeff Golick:

I think the next line, @glenn, is something like, "Been away so long, my friends don't recognize me no more."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:40am Andrew Waterloo:

it has it's hints of Portlandia. But, also a university with an institute for improvisation.
Avatar Sun. 4/10/16 11:43am glenn:

the university has an agricultural college, so it's kind of like a place where hipsters go to become farmers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:47am Andrew Waterloo:

I knew about the veterinarian school
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:50am doctorjazz:

Loving this "unplugged" Otis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:51am doctorjazz:

Just watched the Fame Studio doc on Netflix, fun to see.
  Sun. 4/10/16 11:51am Dean:

Not unlike UC Davis, an aggie school with a program in wine-making.
Avatar Sun. 4/10/16 11:57am glenn:

oh, and hank davis [cult rockabilly hero] is a psychology prof at u. of g., although he may have retired by now.
  Sun. 4/10/16 11:58am Jesse k:

Morning Jeff, thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:59am Jeff Golick:

Ahoy, @Jesse K! Thanks for being here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 11:59am doctorjazz:

Drone on, Jeff, fun show, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/10/16 12:02pm Jeff Golick:
