I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

In Tono, a strange house in the mountain is called a mayoi-ga (a house hound when one loses his way). Translation of Tale #63 Mayoiga, from "Tono Monogatari (The Legends of Tono)": lovetono.exblog.jp...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm
fred:

I'm confused by "house hound when one loses his way". Could it be "found" instead of "hound"? Otherwise could you maybe rephrase?
Avatar 4:24pm
Mayuko:

oops! that must be typo. it's a house you find when you go into a mountain and lose your way home.

Good Monday, Mayuko, fred, and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm

I'm glad I got this right, and even more that folktale language works even in Japanese. I've always been fond of combining Wittgenstein stuff with Pinkola Estes like tales
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm
fred:

I'm listening live! I'm still on Sonic Protest vacation tomorrow, but the festival is over. Mono headphones, but I'm happy to not have spoilers for a change. Already cliky-starred the first track, and Ikue Mori is a close-to-sure bet

Hi James and Mayuko wonderful to be here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
fred:

@Flash Strap: I wanted to say Hola back, but that would be awkward. Will you settle for a Pierre-like "Bonjour"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
fred:

Are you kidding me? I'm listening live and you're playing Kyrgyz music? I did the right thing!
Avatar 5:14pm

A bonjour will do nicely, Fred

hello folks :)

Hi there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm

Totally makes sense to me, and I stand corrected as this is actually Kazakh. I like Kazakh music too. Already clicky-starred the whole show. A quake-related performance is particularly appropriate today

Hi Mayuko! This show is a regular Sakura Matsuri!

It's hard for me yet to distinguish musics from around that area yet, fred. Glad what I'm doing/saying today is making sense to you.

@Mayuko: It's obviously hard for me too! As long as we're trying and taking interest, I hope we're both learning and doing something good

have to run but i just want to say that this show was the sonic fuel to a reasonably successful collage session and I'm very grateful for it

@fred, I agree, it's simply fascinating to hear all these things but I also think it's a good thing that we all get interested and try learn about others. Music is one of the things that helps doing that the best!

@Danne D oh! no oreo tonight?! I will die from hunger.

Have a good rest of the show Mayuko :)
I'm usually distracted at work by other craziness though :(
And oftentimes I'm as I am now packing up and heading into the car.

Now I have to give Mayuko extra oreos next time I see her :(

Hey! I know this track! And it's the ONLY thing you've played that I know.. Just one reason why I enjoy your program so much is that's about typical.
Avatar 6:32pm
rbxbx:

Stepchild: I love that aspect as well! Knowing a few things here and there is nice to keep you feeling like a cool music-knowing person, but exposure to new things is where it's at :)
Avatar 6:33pm
Mayuko:

ha, I don't know what other DJs are playing most of the time either, haha. so glad you've enjoyed the stuff I've played, Stepchild!
Avatar 6:33pm
Mayuko:

oh and hello rbxbx! welcome on board!
Avatar 6:35pm
rbxbx:

Hiya! This is actually just robert still, but I've rebranded and finally created a wfmu account :)
Avatar 6:37pm
Mayuko:

Now that I think, there are even some stuff that I don't even know until I play - like that Tohoku ritual music I played earlier today, just found them last week. These traditional music/performances/cultures differ from time to time, region to region within a country, I can never be arrogant enough to say I truly understand them just because I am from the same country. So much to learn!!!
Avatar 6:38pm
Mayuko:

ah, so that was you robert! ok, well greeting twice and thrice doesn't hurt. hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
fred:

Thanks for sharing the learning opportunities. We lean as you do. That's beautiful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
Stepchild:

Flash Strap said something similar the other day Mayuko. Reminded me of a John Cage story of delivering a lecture series where he promised to learn the material each week that his students (California housewives, I think he said!) asked for, then lecture on it.
Avatar 6:43pm
rbxbx:

Didn't Richard Feynman often do the same thing? Learn a subject by having to lecture on it. It's a good trick :)
Avatar 6:44pm
geezerette:

Hi Mayuko, echoing Fred and others. Wonderful learning new things, especially fun together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
fred:

I meant "learn" not "lean", though that works too
Avatar 6:45pm
Mayuko:

Flash Strap definitely is an explorer, as his show name explains! I love that John Cage story! and Richard Feynman too? That's so funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
fred:

@rbxbx: I'd hate to lecture anyone though, mentoring is more my thing
Avatar 6:47pm
Mayuko:

and hallo, thank you for listening, geezerette!!
Avatar 6:50pm
Mayuko:

Doing a radio show is better than lecturing/mentoring! AND I get to learn a lot every week AND have fun with all of you.
Avatar 6:50pm
rbxbx:

@fred – fair enough, teaching is the crux of the matter. Come to think of it, I think I prefer mentoring to lecturing as well. Need to find more opportunities to do so :)
Avatar 6:53pm
rbxbx:

I haven't heard Flash Strap's show yet. Will have to make it a point to do so. Sounds great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
fred:

@rbxbx: I wasn't expressing a value judgment, just a personal flaw: I suck at lecturing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm
listener james from westwood:

There was a "Simpsons" where Marge offers to give piano lessons to earn the family a bit more dough. Either Bart or Lisa says, "Mom, you don't know how to play the piano!"
In one of my favorite lines in the series, Marge optimistically replies, "I just have to stay one lesson ahead of the kid!"

遠野 is a beautiful place, quite convincing there would be many ephemeral folk tales told.
Avatar 12:38am
Mayuko:

So you have been there too, zzmz?! That's really great!! I was there in May... so green and wisteria was in full bloom everywhere... it was indeed so beautiful.

zzzmm:

Speaking of 遠野 and 民謡ベストコレクション4 岩手編 you played it while back I thought you had relatives in IWATE.
Avatar 5:55pm
Mayuko:

My real grandfather was supposedly from Aomori, I never met him and I don't know any of his relatives, but maybe it's his genes in me that gets me attracted to Tohoku region, haha. The first CD I ever bought when I was in 3rd grade was the soundtrack of "Night on the Galactic Railroad" for the story written by Kenji Miyazawa who was from Iwate, so that's what originally got me interested in Iwate.
  9:50pm
mzmz:

I'm not much of fan of 宮沢 賢治 although only read his well-known stuff. Did you know? he's very hot in west these days. btw I also got 民謡ベストコレクション4 岩手編 too. Love it every track.
Avatar 8:02pm
Mayuko:

Not a huge fan of the most famous poem of his either, but there are many less known poems and short stories I love. and he's got a unique, almost awkward (or maybe rugged is the word) rhythm of his own in the way he writes which is kind of addictive. That kind of thing must be hard to get translated... but I'm very curious to know how he has been received in the west!

Thank you very much! Google seach couldn't show it.
