Hey, Adam

Jeff,
I've been a WFMU listener for almost 30 years. Besides a few rare plays from Bob Brainen and Jesse Jarnow, I think that you may be the only other dj on the station to play the Grateful Dead. Very nice. I was stunned hearing those first notes of Estimated Prophet.
Anyway.
I usually don't do much listening at this hour and I am happy to have stumbled on to your show. Nice playlists. Its moments like these that have kept me a faithful listener and supporter. All the best.
Longtime/lifetime GD fan.

That was Super.

Dan Rather interviewed Bob Weir yesterday.
Avatar 3:33am
Jeff Conklin:

@Dave B: I often play the Dead as they are near and dear to my heart and they are spiritual forebears to a lot of modern music I play whether those artists see the connection or not. Thanks for tuning in.

Smilty69:

Nate K interviewed Jesse Jarnow re: Grateful Dead book he wrote. Pretty good stuff.
Avatar 3:40am
Jeff Conklin:

@Smilty69: Cool. Jesse and I go way back. Reading the book now.

Smilty69:

Last week someone mentioned Phish on the comments board. Jeff, have you ever played them on your show?
Avatar 3:45am
Jeff Conklin:

@Smilty69: No I haven't and its very unlikely i ever will

Those connections and segues are the mark of an artist. It's all too often that G/D get clumped into the jamband camp and stopped there. It's great to see the dots connected to different genres and more exploratory stuff.
If you get a chance sometime, listen to a song from Bill Frisel, Joe Lavano and Phil Motian called "Cambodia" It has a similar Dark Star vibe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51am
Smilty69:

I never got into Phish but I do think Billy Breathes is beautiful album.
Avatar 3:52am
Jeff Conklin:

@Smilty: they are a great band in many ways but not AG material.
  4:01am
Spoonys:

I wish more people realized the Dead are much more than a jam band. I cant tell you how many times people say they wouldn't like them because they don't like jam bands
  4:05am
Spoonys:

I am also blown away by how many "deadheads" put Garcia on such a pedestal. Without Bob it wouldn't have been the the Dead
Avatar 4:12am
Jeff Conklin:

@Spoonys: Re: jam band/Dead thing: I've been amazed at how things have changed in that regard. People are a lot more open to them as great songwriters than they were 15 years ago...

Good morning.J.C., and all. Along for the rest of the ride, watching the river flow.
  4:22am
Spoonys:

@Jeff that is really good to hear actually. Also fun fact on the subject of Phish....I say fun fact, but don't hold me to it...I am pretty sure at one point a Phish concert held the world record for most nude people photographed at one time.
Avatar 4:23am
Jeff Conklin:

@Spoonys: That's true and I was there (not nude)

Good morning! I dropped in as our DJ was speaking. Fortunate to hear that version of, "When I Paint My Masterpiece." Nice to see DJ Drone Beard in the Ghetto: )

I would imagine it is hard to forget a day like that
Avatar 4:35am

Morning, John.

@Spoonys: It was at one of their festivals. I didn't see the photo shoot and I think I'm better for it...

Grabbed the full Lake Mary digital discography on Bandcamp the other day and have been binge listening ever since. Such a great artist. This album sent me down the road.
Avatar 4:40am
Jeff Conklin:

@Bentangle: This album sent you or hearing Lake Mary on this program did? ;)

Scraps deSelby:

h'lo Jeff. It's nice to hear these musicians at night, wake up and go to sleep hearing them. I'm now in the hospital / rehab healing from a fractured hip, and it's even more nice to hear WFMU and Avant Ghetto. Thank you.

p.s.: Don Cherry in free jazz mode is awesome.

josh:

occasionally i'll hear something on WFMU that really grabs me and forces me to stop what i'm doing and take a note of who the artist is. it keeps turning out to be lake mary recently.

it's kinda like the opposite of that nick cave quote about the RHCP.
Avatar 4:45am
Jeff Conklin:

Hey, Scraps, hope you're ok and that we may help in the recovery process a little bit!
Avatar 4:46am
Jeff Conklin:

@josh: That's great to hear! It's an amazing, multi-faceted project...

no kidding jeff - i see there's a collaborator credit on this one, but it's quite different from the other tracks i've heard.

Good Morning. Great hearing a banjo as the sun is rising.

Glad to hear Dylan, especially enjoyed the *When I Paint My Masterpiece* earlier.
Listened to days of Dead from the Internet Archives while on a giant and very dull accounting project. Under-appreciated and under-credtited musical influence, as you say.
