Morning, Jeff and all! Dreary, dim Sundays cry out for jazz.
Avatar Sun. 6/5/16 9:02am Peter from DE:

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:03am Jeff Golick:

Well then I'd better play some, @ljfw! Morning to you, and also to you, @Peter from DE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:17am doctorjazz:

Hi all..DO in the AM, then Paper Mill Theater's West Side Story with my 99 mother in law. Now playing DO through speakers to, ahem, help motivate my wife to leave the house faster :) She says you can do better than that, Jeff, but I warned her you will...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:18am doctorjazz:

That's 99 year old, hate tapping on devices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:19am Jeff Golick:

Ha ha, @doctorjazz. Greetings to you and Mrs. @doctorjazz. Yeah, we're really oozing into the start of this show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:20am Andrew Waterloo:

good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:21am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @Andrew Waterloo! Gosh, up early today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:24am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: 99 years! And going to local theater! (Insert "Hasn't she suffered enough?" joke here.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:24am Andrew Waterloo:

yah, doesn't feel like it though
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:26am listener james from westwood:

All of these new releases this year, or any reissues? They're bloody perfect for today.
Avatar Sun. 6/5/16 9:26am Peter from DE:

This atmospheric stuff is a great continuation of my Saturday night, seeing my friend William Clarke-Fields improvise electronic music with visual interface: www.facebook.com... (Bill's set starts 49:30). I also picked up a second-hand copy of "Longing for the Past: The 78 rpm Era in Southeast Asia" (Dust-to-Digital), so it's a great weekend for weird music. (And going to see the Rahsaan Roland Kirk documentary this afternoon.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:27am Jeff Golick:

All new releases, @ljfw. That Wooden Houses link takes you to a name-yr-price download, btw.
Avatar Sun. 6/5/16 9:27am hyde:

hello and good morning DO Radio-ers
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:29am Jeff Golick:

Hiya, @hyde!

@Peter: wow second hand D2D doesn't turn up very often. Nice grab. Thanks for that link. Is that a new Rahsaan doc?
Avatar Sun. 6/5/16 9:31am Peter from DE:

It's called "The Case of the Three Sided Dream." It's available for streaming online for I think $9.99, but if you're near Wilmington DE you can see it at Theatre N at 4:00 (on the big screen, $8). According to reviews, the doc doesn't delve as deep as it could into Kirk's life but features lots of performance footage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:32am doctorjazz:

Paper Mill Theater is Actually off Broadway in Jersey...really nice productions, they sometimes preview shows going to Broadway (Newsies was one). One of the few things out here that mitigates my missing Park Slope a wee bit.
Avatar Sun. 6/5/16 9:33am Peter from DE:

@Jeff -- do check out that link later (and there are two other electronic music performers). I think you'll like it. I'm not always into ambient/drone stuff "at home" but enjoy it more "in person." And Bill's stuff is really cool, he's been playing with visual stuff lately. I have no idea what he was doing, he was moving sliders and pushing buttons on his iPad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:38am doctorjazz:

I actually hate "name your price", feel bad low balling, feel like a sap paying more...
(bring this to my shrink next time...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:38am listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: Thanks for the scoop! Between this show's new releases and the ones Sheila B. plays, this could get expensive! (Maybe why I'm working on a weekend!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:39am doctorjazz:

this Tapscott is great...there's not too much of his stuff around, have to look for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:39am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: but, then, my "joke" doesn't work as well...

@Peter: agree re in person; at least there are fewer distractions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:43am Gary:

Where's the coffee pot?
Avatar Sun. 6/5/16 9:43am Peter from DE:

@doctorjazz A lot of Tapscott's Nimbus West recordings are on Bandcamp
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:44am Jeff Golick:

BOOM: nimbuswest.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:45am Jeff Golick:

@Gary! How goes the recovery? I wouldn't be surprised if you had trouble finding your hands and feet after that marathon broadcast on Friday...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:46am Gary:

Ha! I'm fine -- I'm recovering right now from staying up too late last night
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:48am listener james from westwood:

Man, Gary, Kurt, and Uncle Michael should get some sort of 6-Hour Super Shift medal. Likely shaped like a coffee carafe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:49am listener james from westwood:

Plus didn't Clay Pigeon and, who, Therese or Meghan, pull a monstro shift during Hurricane Sandy as the waters lapped the shores of Jandekistan?
Avatar Sun. 6/5/16 9:54am Peter from DE:

This set is in my wheelhouse! Tapscott - Zorn (powered by Sorey) - Muhal...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:54am Jeff Golick:

...and didn't Glen Jones break the Guinness record for longest show or some such?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:55am listener james from westwood:

100 hours and change! And the station has the certificate to confirm it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:57am Gary:

I've listened to some of that Glen Jones show -- my morbid curiosity wanted to know what a person would sound like towards the end of that
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 9:59am Jeff Golick:

And?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:02am listener james from westwood:

He sounded like he was swelling up all over, like his tongue needed a 20-day nap. He sounded like a smeared, distorted Polaroid. The bizarre thing is he was up for a few hours after that! He went to Ken Freedman's place and gave an interview and such before crashing.
Avatar Sun. 6/5/16 10:04am Peter from DE:

Got this recording the day it came out, glad to have more Evans with DeJohnette (and studio setting), but nothing on this album can touch the classic Verve Montreux record
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:04am Jeff Golick:

That's an impressive image, @ljfw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:06am Gary:

I was trying to find the place where he might have collapsed at the end or something, but I never did. The parts I heard were near the end, and he seemed to be holding up well, although I admittedly did not sit there and listen for very long -- I was literally scooting around trying to hear something on the lines of "I ... uh ... it's been ... this ... what are those birds with human arms do --" [crashing noise]
Avatar Sun. 6/5/16 10:07am holland oats:

mornin' d:o & all those lost in the black forest
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:15am Jeff Golick:

Top o the morning to you @holland oats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:19am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Lurkin'. Appreciatively.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:23am Jeff Golick:

I see you there, @RRN63; happy to have you aboard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:23am Jeff Golick:

More on this Martirano piece: www.subrosa.net...
  Sun. 6/5/16 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

Sub Rosa does such wonderful work. Mind blowing catalog. Hi Jeff and all Outbounders!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Hi, Doug! How's NOLA treating you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:33am Jeff Golick:

A few months ago I featured a number of Sub Rosa releases in a set: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:34am Jeff Golick:

Just gonna stick this here, from the Sub Rosa link above: "Under development from the late 1960s, the SalMar is believed to be the first interactive 'composing machine' with digital logic circuits at its heart. The performance took place in the spring of 1983 at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris. It illustrates the power that an electronic composition can achieve when the composer arrives at a true synergy with his synthesizer. When you listen to this recorded performance of Sal Martirano playing his 'Construction,' you experience such mastery. The instrument under his command does his bidding, and what you hear are compositions, not jams."
  Sun. 6/5/16 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

The oyster po' boys are flowing like a mighty river, and I am the paddle wheel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:40am Jeff Golick:

If that were real life and not a simile, Katrina would've looked a whole lot different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:41am Jeff Golick:

Or is it a metaphor --- @ljfw?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:46am listener james from westwood:

@Gary: Glen was actually standing as he crossed the line. I think he was worried if he sat, he'd conk TF out.

Ken also gave him a sponge/Wet Ones bath at some point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:54am doctorjazz:

Just got rained out on my Ozzie walk, had to hide the electronics, catch up on the archive.
Back to Tapscott, I had no idea there was so much of his music out there. I remember trying to find him in record stores and catalogs years back, and all you could find was The Dark Tree, maybe another cd if you looked hard. Boy, things have changed in these days of the internets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:55am doctorjazz:

We're a pretty soggy twosome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 10:56am Jeff Golick:

Here's that blog post on Jocy et al: blogthehum.wordpress.com...
  Sun. 6/5/16 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

When you spell "mama" "momma," you know things are getting serious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:00am Andrew Waterloo:

mmm the coffee is ready
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:05am doctorjazz:

Great Aretha cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:07am listener james from westwood:

LOL @ the Quimby drop-in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:09am Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: there are just SO MANY references to jazz being horrible out there...can't help but collect them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:16am Jeff Golick:

If I could just play piano like Herbie Hancock on this Lee Morgan number, I'd die happy.

(I'd probably also have to change my pants. Just saying.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:19am listener james from westwood:

The bit where Lisa tries to get KJAZZ to play Bleedin' Gums Murphy's record has this gem of a line:

Well, I'd spin it for you, but you know, ain't no one going to hear it. Our broadcast range is only 23 feet which makes us the most powerful jazz station in the entire US of A.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:20am Jeff Golick:

LOL, @listener james!
  Sun. 6/5/16 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

It's only 10:28am here. Oh how I wish D:O was only 1/2 over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:31am Jeff Golick:

...too bad there's no good music in New Orleans, @Doug. (But aw thanks!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:33am listener james from westwood:

Skies just OPENED the HELL UP out here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:36am Jeff Golick:

Was wondering what that noise was.
  Sun. 6/5/16 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

Best music so far: The Original Pinettes, the world's only all-female brass band. Heard them at a bar in the Treme (rather unnervingly) called Bullet's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:45am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff, folks (& Doug) Bulleit is a strange tasting rye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:46am listener james from westwood:

That Benjamin track was entrancing.
  Sun. 6/5/16 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

Rain was pummeling at the rate of 2-3 inches per hour here last evening. The wind blew the doors open to the restaurant where we were and drenched the front of the place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:47am Jeff Golick:

That sounds amazing, @Doug. (The all-female band, that is.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:49am Brian in UK:

.......and then Marie came gliding down the boulevard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:49am Gary:

Oh wow, it's Jayne Cortez!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:50am Jeff Golick:

Hullo, @Brian in UK!
  Sun. 6/5/16 11:52am Doug Schulkind:

I went back to the Louisiana Music Factory for a 2nd visit, just to buy their disc. The day before, I bought a CD at LMF by another group claiming to be the world's only all-female brass band. They are called

Mo' Lasses
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:53am Brian in UK:

It is a scorcher over here today. Been digging and suchlike, one is glowing.

Doug, can guess what we will be hearing soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:55am Jeff Golick:

"The music you are listening to was improvised on February 3rd, 2013 on MacDougal Street in New York. We had never all played together before. The first note you hear was the first note played. Fifty minutes later we took a break, which is where the album ends. I named the pieces in tribute to five influential people who passed away between December 28th, 2012 and February 4th, 2013. The title of the album can be taken as a humble request at the moment of their crossing over."
  Sun. 6/5/16 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

What, share my tunes? You must be kidding!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:57am Jeff Golick:

("We" = Daniel Carter, Daniel Levin, Satoshi Takeishi & Waldman)
  Sun. 6/5/16 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

Gotta head out now. We have my mother-in-law's ashes and are going to go sprinkle them under a live oak in Audubon Park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:59am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: these ladies may have a claim: www.discogs.com...

Oh! Peace be with you and may be wind be at your back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 11:59am Brian in UK:

Doug Must have a touch of sun stroke (Note Sun Stroke are the only trans Gender Brass Band in the world)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 12:00pm Gary:

Doug! I want to go music shopping in New Orleans with you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 12:01pm Brian in UK:

Gary control yourself remember Amsterdam & London. Besides there is a queue.
Avatar Sun. 6/5/16 12:02pm Jesse K:

Only caught the tail end today, late night::late morning but what a great way to wake up thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 12:02pm listener james from westwood:

Last chance to join Gary in doing a 6-hour shift! If not, go, have a fab Sunday, and thanks muchly for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/5/16 12:05pm Jeff Golick:
