Like - for The Beatles, it was important that they went from Engineer Norman Smith to the younger Geoff Emerick in the psychedelic era. Engineering is not Mastering of course...
Many Artists complained - especially in the Analog era, & early in the Digital era, that things were too Compressed by uptight &/or insensitive Engineers during Mastering (they would want to be sure the highs & lows weren't too great) - all the dynamics flattened out...
