@ Cliff: I always thought -- given the blues-rock/boogie debt -- that the name was a twist on the name of TX bluesman Z.Z. Hill. (ZZ Hilltop?) But apparently -- according to one dubious source -- they derived it from the name B.B. King. Shrug.

BTW: Back in the '60s, I gather that there were a number of Andy Warhol impersonators hitting the lecture circuit, all with the artists's carte blanche approval.
Similarly, I gather that decades later the surf-rock band Man or Astroman? granted a similar license-- allowing fan/tribute/cover bands to tour using their name.
  10:56pm
JakeGould:

@EFD: Amazing the sheer extent of what folks got away with in the pre-Interweb days. I mean, chutzpah is too light a word.

Avatar 10:58pm

Great interview! Now I wanna read the story. (Semi related- the Shangri-Las did shows when no original member was in band. I heard this from Bobby Schayer, drummer supreme, and so he called the band the Shangri-Nots! Then I saw the band, a different version, do a free city hall park show. I saw RChristgau in crowd so I told him this.)

@Figgs that $10 is going to go unclaimed by me.
  10:59pm

Really? I always thought the biggest thing Andy Warhol had to deal with is unauthorized prints his studio assistants would make and then sell on their own. Gerard Malanga has silk screen ink on his hands.
