Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 8:59am Jeff Golick:

Hey there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:01am Uncle Michael:

Jeff, this is funny. Check the *date* of this playlist:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:01am fred:

Good morning. I'll be staying in this afternoon, by my destination is out. How does this work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:03am Jeff Golick:

WHOA. That is freaky, @UM, and totally coincidental! Really!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:04am Uncle Michael:

Who will now be forced to use that gif on July 31, 2017?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:04am Jeff Golick:

Just keep your tray table in the upright position, @fred, and all should be fine. Welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:07am Uncle Michael:

The honor is to serve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:13am Uncle Michael:

Nice stereo mix today, Jeff. I'd say the balance skews a bit left. (assuming my channels aren't swapped)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:13am Jeff Golick:

Aha, thanks. @UM. That might just be this cut, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:17am Uncle Michael:

For reference, I've got piano/right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:17am Jeff Golick:

Perfect - me, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:19am Jeff Golick:

I think I just decided to honor the late Charles Davis by playing a cut on which he doesn't appear. Ugh. (I have many takes of this tune, is what it is.)
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 9:25am coelacanth:

good morning Jeff and OUTies
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:26am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wull - I'm diggin' all of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:26am Jeff Golick:

Hello and good morning to you, @coelacanth and @Revolution Rabbit Nov63!
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 9:35am coelacanth:

i heard the tail of "cell walk for celeste" but i'll be revisiting that a few times.
10-12 years ago i heard it and decided to buy it but couldn't find a used copy within miles of affordable. i've never checked the wfmu advanced search but this is the first time i've heard it since then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:37am Jeff Golick:

@coelacanth: this here - www.discogs.com... - should do you right.
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 9:37am coelacanth:

...oh, that was "take 8", so- i guess nycr&b has been re-released? with extra tracks?
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 9:40am coelacanth:

{like 2 ships passing in the night...}

Thanks!

...and, rest in peace Charles Davis, who i will say i'm not familiar with, except the name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:40am Jeff Golick:

Those 1960 "Nat Hentoff sessions" for Candid were recently put together in a box. Great to have it all in one place after having been sporadically available in different configurations over the years, with wildly date-inappropriate cover shots of Cecil.
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 9:44am Peter from DE:

Good morning all. Jeff, we are mind-melded today. You just played tracks from the first Ibrahim and the first Muhal that I ever acquired. Both tracks so sad/happy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:46am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @Peter - happy to be melded with you today!
And they say the 1980s were a bad decade for jazz...
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 9:46am Peter from DE:

If you play the first track from Dino Betti van der Noot's Here Comes Springtime that will push things over the top. (check it out if you don't know it)
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 9:46am coelacanth:

that's a great set and a great price for all you get. i do already have at least 1/2 of the material though, on "jumpin' punkins" and "the world of Cecil Taylor".
...what to do...
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 9:47am Peter from DE:

Plenty of great 80s jazz once you get past the "young lions"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:48am Jeff Golick:

@Peter: I don't know it! Totally new name to me; will look for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:51am Uncle Michael:

Definitely left-leaning balance, Jeff.
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 9:53am Peter from DE:

That 1985 Soul Note DBvdN album is his best. Imagine a cross between Nino Rota and Ellington (which is not a bad description of Muhal)
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 9:55am Peter from DE:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:59am Jeff Golick:

Wow, sounds wonderfu, @Peter. Totally under my radar. European dude?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 9:59am Jeff Golick:

@UM: not seeing an easy fix on the mixer; we might have to revisit offline again.
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 10:04am Peter from DE:

Italian, I believe. Weird name, right? I know very little about him. I think his day job is heading up an advertising agency in Milan!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 10:24am Jeff Golick:

I'm about to really try everyone's Dylan patience...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 10:24am Jeff Golick:

(That is, if I haven't already started.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 10:42am fred:

I actually liked that Dylan track (I'm not a Dylan fan at all though)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 10:45am doctorjazz:

Hey all, looks like I missed some great sets, have to catch up in the archives. Having seen Ekaya many times, I heard Davis play often in the 80s. Sorry to hear about his passing.
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 10:45am coelacanth:

mix?
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 10:45am coelacanth:

arrangement?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 10:45am Uncle Michael:

re-envision?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 10:47am doctorjazz:

Did Peggy Lee do a different version of this song? Could swear she did a more upbeat version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 10:49am Jeff Golick:

We would also have accepted "re-envisioning," yes. Thanks, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 10:51am Jeff Golick:

Hey hey, @doctorjazz! I'm not aware of a different Peggy Lee rendition, but would happily hear it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 10:54am doctorjazz:

My bad, same version, I just remembered it differently.
Don't know if you fixed that balance issues, sounds pretty centered through my phone/headphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 10:55am Brian in UK:

Good day Jeff and other backsliders.

Woke up to some soothing Bud Powell this morning.

Some strange att(etudes) going down here.
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 10:56am coelacanth:

i didn't know there were 2 Peggy Lees in music. i happen to think highly of the singer Peggy Lee's singing. direct, on target - not a lot of showing off; just tonal quality, phrasing, passion, power and what seems like a natural ability to sing on key.
- she's Awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 10:59am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: Thanks to Uncle Michael, I was able to move from 1-channel broadcasting (!!) to 2-channel, which helps immensely. There might be some residual balance issues (that he's heard during the show), but overall a massive improvement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:03am Uncle Michael:

I just checked and in my headphones, the balance seems fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:04am Jeff Golick:

Hallo, @Brian in UK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:05am Jeff Golick:

@coel: yah, I always thought that being the "other" Peggy Lee would be a huge handicap for a musician, but she's holding on to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:11am fred:

Years ago, waiting to get into a venue for a show, I overheard excited guys saying Donna Summer would be playing at a small club. I thought it would be WFMU's (aka Jason Forrest) and sure enough it was. At least I guess Peggy Lee isn't afraid of a lawsuit
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:14am Jeff Golick:

I think it's her actual name, @fred! Which I don't believe one can copyright.

One of my favorite little gags on the show "30 Rock" was Liz Lemon's would-be husband, Wesley Snipes, who was in fact a white British dude.
  Sun. 7/31/16 11:19am Dean:

Can't copyright, but can trademark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:23am fred:

@Jeff: Indeed, Dean is correct. There have been many cases. A bunch involving McDonald's, others about people whose names happened to match a presidential ticket
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:27am Brian in UK:

Worth waiting for, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:28am doctorjazz:

This Chris Speed is really nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:29am Jeff Golick:

Ah, glad you agree, @Brian. (And @drj.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:29am doctorjazz:

Ditto for Tiny Bell, that was a great band!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:30am Jeff Golick:

@fred/Dean: fascinating. I guess if there is thought to be a potential loss of business, or confusion in the marketplace, one has a case.
  Sun. 7/31/16 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

What in Sam Hill is going on here?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:33am doctorjazz:

I'm no later, but if guess opening McDonald's Pulling Supplies would be OK, boy a McDonald's Burger Place would not, even if your name is McDonald.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:33am Jeff Golick:

Always a good question, Doug! Hiya!
  Sun. 7/31/16 11:33am Dean:

Right, such as a false implication that the one and only Jeff Golick, celeb DJ on the GTDR stream, endorses my tong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:34am Brian in UK:

You could change it fron the Irish Mc to the Scottish Mac
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:34am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: btw, had some rosemary triscuits the other day and thought of you. They are phenomenally tasty, btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:35am Brian in UK:

This sounds a bit like Jack Emblow.
  Sun. 7/31/16 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

I once dated a girl named Rosemary Triscuits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:38am Jeff Golick:

I'll endorse your tong, @Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:43am doctorjazz:

Holshouser track is absolutely beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:46am Jeff Golick:

Was she salty, @Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:47am Jeff Golick:

@drj: agreed, wholeheartedly.

@Brian: don't know from Jack Emblow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:48am doctorjazz:

Of to discogs again...
Great music, thanks Jeff.
  Sun. 7/31/16 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

No, but her gluten was spectacular. Gotta get back to the stackin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:49am Jeff Golick:

Hah. My absolute pleasure, @doctorjazz.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 11:57am Jeff Golick:

Had no idea of that cameo, @UM!

Thanks, @coelacanth! Thanks for being here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 12:00pm Jeff Golick:

Kate Bush, ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 12:03pm Uncle Michael:

Lot's of Monday DJs to fight over that gif next year.
Avatar Sun. 7/31/16 12:04pm coelacanth:

(wikipedia says Kate Bush, born 30 july, is married to guitarist Dan McIntosh. i had to check!)

...that's fantastic about the gif!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 7/31/16 12:05pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Jeff!
