I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Howdy Mayuko and all! If I could bring doughnuts for everyone, I would!

Hello Mayuko, James and other listeners

Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey, what the? I think Michael Shelley has the same color playlist going on right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm
listener james from westwood:

This is a calming color. I'd drive a convertible this color, too. (My birthday's in 11 months.)

Mayuko:

Hello, james, fred! Ken, this is Mayuko Shelley today apparently. Mayuko and Michael don't sound too different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

As I mentioned on MS's playlist, my Geocities web site had this background color.

I hope the summer has been treating everyone well. These are some good radio times for cleaning house!

That Haruomi Hosono track was closer to what Sakamoto was doing at the time than what I expected. I guess I only know his more pop side
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
fred:

Oh, some music from Okinawa!

My work place has no AC, my apartment has no AC, and studio C only has a small fan, but I'm surviving alright, Dave B.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
fred:

I hate AC. I have had a lot of ear problems, and AC is basically an ear infection dispenser. Ice cream is so much better than AC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko: Yikes. Hoping that drinking lots of fluids has helped!
Avatar 12:49pm
Mayuko:

That Hosono track was less pop than usual maybe because it was soundtrack for a movie, fred. And I agree ice cream is much better than AC, if only I don't have to be productive and just take a nap all the time, I'm fine without it. Seems like at this point AC is necessary if you want to function like a decent human being in NYC.

@james trying to stay hydrated!

This Saboten track is very nice (and new to me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
listener james from westwood:

I can think of at least 2 film soundtracks (Tron: Legacy and The Social Network) that I bought and dig but for which I haven't seen the film, b/c I don't want to wreck the images I have in my head that have come to accompany the music.

I wonder where Osaka fits on that East/West divide. Maybe that limit can be drawn scientifically the way Liz solved the North/South NJ division (though I guess it would not involve Taylor Ham and Pork Roll)
Avatar 1:12pm
Mayuko:

Yes! Thems are the Chidori! @Dave B
Avatar 1:14pm
Mayuko:

james, feels like that happens with shows' flyers too. I used to sometimes imagine something so good from a flyer that I don't even wanna go see it actually happen, haha.
Avatar 1:27pm
Mayuko:

Osaka belongs to the Kansai region, which is the west. And sometimes it feels to me their aesthetic is over the top, but maybe that's why many bands who are not afraid of being weird/uncool come out from there. Like Boredoms and afrirampo and Oorutaichi and people like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
fred:

Flyers for small noise shows here are totally unrelated to the music. All I want is legible time, place and hopefully ticket price (so I don't force them to struggle with change). A low bar, not always met. Dance show flyers usually feature a photo, which tells a lot (to me at least)
Avatar 1:34pm
Mayuko:

Haha! Low bars are often not met it seems. I think in Tokyo I was rather often irritated that there are always so much information on flyers with super tiny letters telling me all the wonderful resumes of the artists.

Rooftop Movies are canceled here tonight, so I think I'll go see this tomorrow instead:

I once saw Makoto Kawabata play with Keiji Haino. Different vibes, I'm not sure it relates to the East/West distinction
Avatar 1:40pm

Ah! I've got a tix for Daniel Menche tonight at Pioneer Works. When is the next rooftop, Dave B?

Aloha Mayuko and dizzy listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm

@coelacanth: now that you mention it, I have a hole in my inner ear; maybe that explains why I like this show so much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Mayuko, did you get to the chalk festival last weekend? It was just too hot out for me last weekend and I never ventured beyond my own yard.

Gonna show the films I had scheduled for tonight, Ashik Kerib & Color Of Pomegranates, on Saturday August 27.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
coelacanth:

oh no fred, is that true? how'd that happen?
Avatar 1:47pm
Mayuko:

My prejudice tells me if someone is dead serious and dress in all black like Keiji Haino and myself, then probably s/he belongs to the east culture, haha!
Avatar 1:51pm
Mayuko:

hola, coelacanth!! I used to feel dizzy 24 hours for years when I was much younger. Probably should have my ears checked more thoroughly too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm

i often dress in all black... i think i'm dead serious on the inside!
(i'm not of "eastern" descent)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm

@coelacanth: Recurring cholesteatoma eventually ate through it. I'm at 6 surgeries and counting
Avatar 1:53pm
Mayuko:

Ken, sadly this brutal heat is preventing me from functioning like a decent human being, let alone going to such wonderful event. I also blame the weather for all my miscues and technical mistakes on today's show.

My wardrobe is >75% black at the moment!
This Bourne track is exceptional.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
coelacanth:

yes, but i cannot wear so much black on summer days. i overheat.

...fred i'm sorry to hear that about the cholesteatoma.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
fred:

Thanks Mayuko! I was introduced to Keiji Haino and couldn't do more than mumble. He's quite impressive. But I'm told he has like a museum-worthy collection of instruments, and can play most of them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
coelacanth:

ha! yeah, i've tried to save all my fmu shirts, no matter how dilapidated, but some seem to have disappeared. (including the mighty goldfinch one, which really bums me out.)
