Listener comments!

Ajay:

Morning Jeff. Listening in to the show sitting outside my tent under the bright sun with a cup of tea in hand on a beautiful French campsite. Summer holidays + Conklin jams = time to relax
  3:08am
Eiderdown:

Good morning Jeff! Putting my kids to bed and tuning in. It's been too long...
Finally giving this WFMU app to use.
  3:09am
Eiderdown:

By the way Ajay, that sounds fantastic!

Jeff Conklin:

Morning, boys! Good to be back
  3:13am
hola:

I have to thank you for educating me about the Dead. I never liked them that much, but after hearing so many tracks on your show I'd never heard before I now "get" them. And I like them.
Avatar 3:18am
Jeff Conklin:

@hola: That's awesome to hear. I truly believe there is Dead music for every discerning music head. Sometimes all it takes is a shepherd ;)
  3:19am
hola:

Ha! Also, it's funny because I caught a few of your shows on East Village Radio and I don't recall you were really into the Dead then. If you feel like answering, do you consider yourself a Dead Head, or just someone who likes a lot of Grateful Dead music?
Avatar 3:20am
Fox (Rā-chul):

Woot! Hallooo lovely humans!
Avatar 3:28am
Jeff Conklin:

Hey, Fox.

@hola: I've been pretty obsessed with their music for about 20 years (never saw them). I play them more than I did in the EVR days because I now have an extra hour to stretch out. For about a year I did a Dead show on EVR called 'Bring out Yr Dead' where I would mix their jams with modern and more obscure old psych to bridge the (in my mind, silly) divide between those two camps.
Avatar 3:29am
Jeff Conklin:

And I don't consider myself a "deadhead", there's too much baggage with that term ;)
  3:32am
hola:

Gotcha! Yeah, I like how you use the Dead as a sort of bridge between old and new psych, folk, and improvised music.
Avatar 3:34am
Jeff Conklin:

@hola: Yeah, I mean, the Dead were all of those things!

I think Eiderdown had an aversion to them for a while that I've been slowly chipping away at the last couple years. Isn't that right, Adam?
  3:43am
Eiderdown:

Ha ha. Yes, it's a deep wound left by too many nights forced to listen to the Dead by high school buddies. But Jeffs turning me around. I still can't hang with later era stuff but Anthem Of The Sun is awesome as is Workingman and American Beauty
  3:45am
Eiderdown:

Oddly, I have a fondness for Terrapin Station although maybe that's not one that the Heads usually like? Jeff, youve definitely hipped me to many great live jams as well! Im still in the learning process :)
Avatar 3:45am
Jeff Conklin:

Everybody loving this Mighty Baby jam or what??
  3:46am
hola:

Yeah, love Mighty Baby! They used to be The Action, right? I've never heard this track.
Avatar 3:47am
Jeff Conklin:

Yes, they were. Also learned recently some of them backed up Richard Thompson early on in his solo career. Great interview with RT by my friend Keith here: bombmagazine.org...
  3:48am
hola:

Yeah, just checked on Wikipedia: "Mighty Baby were formed in 1968 from the ashes of The Action." I only have their 1st record.
  3:48am
Eiderdown:

I am definitely in the Mighty Baby zone...was wondering who the hell they were. Action related? Wow!
  3:49am
hola:

Cool RT interview...thanks.
Avatar 3:51am
Jeff Conklin:

That 'Rolled Gold' CD from The Action got so so so so so so so many spins in my car at the turn of the century.

Good morning Jeff!
  3:53am
hola:

Oh my God, The Action are one of my favorite bands ever. Perfect car driving music. ;-)
Avatar 3:53am
Jeff Conklin:

Hey, Guido, how's it going
  3:58am
hola:

This Action release, which came out in the 1980s, has their 1968 songs when they were actually Mighty Baby. Amazing songs. I'd forgotten about that until just now. https://www.discogs.com/The-Action-Action-Speak-Louder-Than/release/1248892
  4:14am
hola:

Every time I hear Ryley Walker's vocals, I think of David Crosby circa Byrds (also one of my favorite bands ever).

Yeah, I listened to Daniel Bachman's River constantly last year...I think I might have heard him first on your show. He's in that Fahey zone but definitely something unique. Looking forward to his new release.
