But I can't listen most times. It's not the same on the archives. I miss those three-hour Friday extravaganzas.
  12:46pm
Dean:

One of the serious drawbacks with publicly supported radio, in my experience, is this situation. An individual can only pony up so much. I've given to Diane's show, of course, but I also have to prioritize, as do others, who will have different priorities. But we're not voting up or down when we give or don't give! We're supporting the entire station. This means management needs to make judgments based on...let's say, aesthetic...factors, independent of precise levels of support to each show.

I'm still bitter about KPFK, LA's Pacifica station, cancelling Fred Hyatt's Opera Show back in '97. It was actually a slow death. They cut it back from four hours to three to two to one...then poof! No more.

Goddammit.

the fact is more donations come in to certain types of music and programming than to others - which partly explains why some shows that would be quite at home on major commercial stations have come to & remain on wfmu.

Bugger. Any other recommendations for good radio shows, similar to Diane's? Not just on fmu, but other stations I can stream. It's like losing a close friend, or my furry pet. I don't like change. I know, look at the bright side, blah-blargh-blah. But, I really do thrive best when I have a good radio show to go off of to hear bands I've never heard before. Thankfully, I have friends who help out, but still. It's not the same. Thank you Diane. I've heard lots of music on this show that I wouldn't have heard otherwise. My best to you! @coelacanth: Been off the board for a bit. I understand the rationale for treating giving as voting. For one thing, it's easy and objectively measurable. But I much prefer the idea of curation of an entire series of programs, some more popular than others, to the vagaries of bean-counting. Here's a counterfactual that works against my disposition: Suppose DKFM were reslotted to a time when I can't listen. I'd be bummed, but I'd be happy that it's still there for others to enjoy. The result for me is the same as the show being cancelled--setting aside the opportunity to revisit missed programs on the archives--but my experience of the result is different.

Hi Luna, WMBR has a weekday program from 10-noon that plays loud stuff (laterisersclub.org). Not to toot my own horn, but I do Thurs. There are other random rock shows on MBR. WCSB in Cleveland has good stuff but their web site is so f'ed up you're not sure if what's listed is what you're listening to (and their archive didn't work for months). There's a station in Minneapolis that's okay but more indie rock. WCBN in Ann Arbor is good. As usual, the programming can be very scattered. Oh and this station in Australia has cool stuff: www.pbsfm.org.au
Avatar 2:04pm

But that's surprising if FMU determines programming by donations. You can make $10 per fundraising show and they still let you on MBR. Very surprising, and sad.

While I like a whole lot of the radio programs on WFMU, Diane's is one of the few I always listen to, if not in real time, then on the archives. It's particularly frustrating to see Diane's show not on the schedule, because her show is of the rare FMU DJs that knows her field so thoroughly that the show has a specific tone and genre range, so I have a vague notion to what I'm in for when I listen. As opposed to the "just found this wierd thing in the library isn't it cool" sort of shows.

Well listener, now you have the link for real time or archive listening.

I really enjoyed Paul Bruno's fill in for Evan FD a couple weeks ago. Is there a place to find out when random FMU dj's will be making special appearances or do you just have to hear the regular DJ announce their fill-ins?

jljl a lot of them use their fundraiser mailing lists. There's also social media.

For shows to help fill the Kamikaze shaped hole in our ears and hearts, maybe "Wm Berger's My Castle of Quiet" (he plays a lot of noise) or "What Was Music?" with Marcel, who did some fill ins and just got a show on Tuesday night.

see, that's a whole "life happens". Remember how Diane had to leave her show in the middle that one year to go have (paying) adventures, and Tony Coulter and others filled in?

My boyfriend is saddened at the lack of Diane on the fall schedule. Not only for the music played, but the music NOT played. One of the many criteria that preferred shows have to reach in my household is that they must not play skreechy saxophone sounds. It drives my boyfriend up the wall (He spent a chunk of his childhood in a jazz club). There's a bunch of great DJs who play great stuff, but Diane's is one of the only shows we can listen to fully skreech-free. Most other days, whenever we turn on the radio, we see how long it takes before a song with sax sounds will start. It's usually around 15 minutes.

I don't know what I am going to do. For reasons to complicated to explain, I don't habitually listen to much Metal in and of itself, but have this crazy craving for it. The accidental discovery of Diane's show has made me hooked though, so I would rely on her show to get my Metal fix. It's gonna be hard.

but I also don't think the is the last we will be hearing of Kamikaze Fun Machine.
