Mark R:

Welcome to my final Saturday night/Sunday morning show. Moving to Sunday night/Monday morning next week. I trust you're all waltzing out there.

Testing...tap tap...is my mojo working?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09am
pacific standard simon:

Tap dancing.
  3:10am
Mark R:

1-2-3, 1-2-3.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12am
pacific standard simon:

This music is so familiar, but there's something missing... can't quite put my finger on it... ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15am
pacific standard simon:

If you got it right then you'd have to quit while you were ahead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Dave the Spazz also queued up a few Prince Buster tunes the other night. www.wfmu.org...

Mark R:

I'm glad I only overlapped by one song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24am
pacific standard simon:

People talking behind the music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26am
pacific standard simon:

Not sure if it's you or my bluetooth speakers.
  3:26am
Mark R:

I'll have to remember that "Earthquake" song next Christmas. I don't think it's me, Simon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29am
pacific standard simon:

I must be picking up a neighbor's signal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51am
pacific standard simon:

OK, fixed that problem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52am
pacific standard simon:

Hey, it's Mickey Hart's birthday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54am
pacific standard simon:

...and Harry Connick Jr.

Rodriguez was HUGE in South Africa! Still is!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04am
pacific standard simon:

That's a big reason why I gravitated to your show and Jeff's. DEADly.
  4:06am
Mark R:

I think this is only the second time I've ever played the Dead, though. I believe it was last October or November, if memory serves. But it obviously made a big impression.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13am
pacific standard simon:

There's something in the assortment of musics you play that suggests a Dead-like eclecticism. I also feel sure that there are other FMU DJs who might throw on the occasional GD number.
  4:17am
Mark R:

Possibly, I just haven't heard 'em. And BTW if you haven't gotten Jeff's Marathon premium, "Songs to Fill the Air," do yourself a favor...Jeff commissioned brand new recordings of Dead classics by an eclectic bunch of contemporary artists, whose names all escape me at the moment...but good stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18am
pacific standard simon:

With so many garage-loving DJs at the station, SOMEone must have spun "The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)" at least once.
  4:20am
Mark R:

Oh you just reminded me, I played "Cream Puff War" a couple weeks ago. So I think this makes #3 with the Dead. It will never rival my Miles Davis spins, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am
pacific standard simon:

I got my big box of Marathon swag last weekend but, alas, Jeff's premium was not one of the chosen. So many good things...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29am
pacific standard simon:

I'm not even a huge Deadhead -- it's just that I was a teenager in the San Francisco area in the early 70s, and they were inescapable on the FM stations at the time. Frequent live broadcasts, and the odd PBS TV simulcast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44am
pacific standard simon:

Someone at the station -- might have been McGasko -- recently played a track from The Relatives' 2013 WFMU benefit. Wonderful stuff. I booked on over to the Free Music Archive and downloaded the whole show. So there you go.

Thank you, DJ Guy!

"Mercy Mercy Mercy" lyric by Gail & Vincent Levy, according to one web site. Added afterwards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52am

Real Numbers sound kinda Dickies-ish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56am

Here's another album that got played to death on San Francisco hippie radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59am

No more tuba player in Taj Mahal's band, I bet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05am

Always liked Tosh better than Marley. Blasphemy, I suppose.

BIG TUNE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10am

Tosh has the midnight sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12am
pacific standard simon:

Patti Smith?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12am
pacific standard simon:

Yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17am
pacific standard simon:

I'd pay to see a cutting contest between Nick Cave and Patti Smith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23am
pacific standard simon:

Like Coleman Hawkins vs Lester Young, or Sonny Stitt vs Dexter Gordon.
  5:25am
Mark R:

I'd never bet against Patti...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28am
pacific standard simon:

She's got it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36am
pacific standard simon:

But Cave's got it, too. My ex kept making me spend huge amounts of moolah on live tickets, and he always destroyed the house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40am
pacific standard simon:

There's that missing thing from Weather Report! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52am
pacific standard simon:

It's funny, because you might think Zawinul is playing electric piano, given the writing credits, but he's not. Organ.

Thx !

I like that you play Coldplay!
