Morning, @fred!

Hi all.

Jeff Golick:

Hullo, @doctorjazz! Welcome.

Ps. Changed something this week that might allow for stereo -- lemme know if you hear weirdness...?
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:16am
doctorjazz:

I'm off on the dog walk, so I'm using my phone and the fmu app. I do hear stereo, though, cymbals to my right, horns more centered but not overlapping. No weirdness I've noted.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:17am
doctorjazz:

Sounds good so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am
Jeff Golick:

Sweet. Thanks for the report! Nice morning for a walk, I'd guess.

Beautiful out here.

"lemme know if you hear weirdness" Isn't that the point?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am
Jeff Golick:

Ha. Yes, of course. I considered adding "...of a technological sort" but...seem to prefer...ellipses.

is there an echo in here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am

I can recommend the whole album. The cover is not of a piece with this tune, tho: img.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am

I hope so, @hyde. Hello to you! you! you!

I'm often asked to participate in listening tests at work, which come with instruction to "ignore synthesis artifacts", as if what these are was obvious. I also remember a WMFU DJ playing a track and only realizing halfway through that the ripping had gone horribly wrong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am
Jeff Golick:

@fred: I would love to participate in listening tests at work. I think.

All we can do is keep our ears open. (Can't help BUT keep them open, of course.)

Erg. Seems we can have either flute or piano but not both. My apologies; my set-up sux.

An example of how there was (almost) no mixing in Jazz yet? Just two mikes & people actually playing?

'Fully Shallow'.
...are FMU comments rife w/ raw gems or is it me...
Avatar 10:26am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Synthesis Artefacts' sounds like Atticus Finch or something...he must have a place somewhere...plays in a Klezmer band...

Great album, the Garchik (with one of the best album titles), got it after hearing it here.

Ah, the rabbis would tell you God doesn't need prayers at all, they are for us to acknowledge we are as dust. As are all the rules. But, yeah, it gets to be a bit much...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah I'm already down with the we are as dust part, I think...
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:48am

You could do one of these things only using Tzadik records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am

Yeah, Zorn has really cornered the market. ("Market.")

Thanks for being here, @doctorjazz, and have a great ride!
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:06am
fred:

There's another Zorn-fest coming here in April. A solo on organ looks good, but the rest is overpriced. I like Tyshawn Sorey a lot, but I'm not shelling out €30 let alone €60 to hear him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am
Jeff Golick:

...especially considering Zorn's own club here in NYC, The Stone, is so reasonably priced, generally $10-20.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am
Jeff Golick:

(Though I suppose there are travel costs to consider...)

My health is so bad that flying isn't an option these days. I'd rather send the money to the station anyway
  11:17am
?:

Just read Roy Edroso's post from Thursday, a reflection on Dylan having won the NP. It reads at points like a eulogy, and I got to thinking two related notions. First, I don't hear much--any?--Dylan on WFMU. Second, wouldn't the NP award be a perfect opportunity to recognize an artist on air before s/he dies?
  11:18am
Dean:

^That there is me.
  11:18am
Doug Schulkind:

Good day, Outfolk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am
Jeff Golick:

Sorry to hear that, @fred, re your health.

@Dean: Hiya. Funny you should mention that; I almost played "Blind Willie McTell" from this Ehrlich album for related reasons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am
Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
Jeff Golick:

I think Dylan gets some play on FMU. Do you listen to Jeff Conklin's shows at all?
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:21am
fred:

@Dean: Dylan doesn't need the station, and he does get some airplay anyway. Maybe I notice it more than you do because I don't like his music much
  11:24am
Dean:

I like to hear relatively unplayed tracks of Dylan's oeuvre (twenty dollar word, you know) even though I'm not a HUGE fan. I love his stuff with The Band, gotta box set of a bunch of the Columbia (one time, Asylum) records that's fun to spin. But I would appreciate a curated traversal for an hour or two of odds and ends.

Ehrlich's Sojourn is one of the CDs I purchased at DMG's previous location more than 15 years ago. It remains sealed! I have never actually played it!
  11:25am
Dean:

Don't know Conklin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am
Jeff Golick:

You should crack that Ehrlich open, @Dean. You'd like it, I'd wager.

Conklin's shows are here: wfmu.org... -- midnight to 3am EST, so evening entertainment for you?
  11:30am
Dean:

Heh, Kate Wolf and Agitation Free together on one program. There you have the poles of the spectrum of my high school mates' musical tastes.

aw, i missed the kcr all day monk tribute. did catch a big Monk tribute on Charlie Kohlhase's Monday Research and Development on WMBR. He did an hour of Monk and and hour of Ed Blackwell since it would have been Blackwell's 87th birthday too that day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am
Jeff Golick:

Ed Blackwell! That's a pretty big bday day.
  11:43am
Dean:

Was eying this Dresser among the new clean feed records. Good to hear.

Another virtually unplayed object in the collection: the 22LP complete Riverside recordings of Monk. It's open, but I almost never have the wherewithal (time, attention) to haul it out and listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am
Jeff Golick:

Was thinking same re Miles Complete Plugged Nickel, @Dean. This Dresser is really good; I hope to play other tunes from it in time. Out officially next month, I think.
  11:48am
Dean:

I should *never* visit the clean feed site! Looks like Dresser has something upcoming with Simon Nabatov, and he did another with Bobby Bradford and Glenn Ferris. I kick myself for not picking up that Plugged Nickel set used a few years ago.
  11:50am
Dean:

The Elliott Sharp with Barry Altschul, btw, is good. My neighbor across the street recently mentioned she went to school with Sharp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am

Played some Dresser w Bradford last week, iirc, a NoBusiness release.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am

^^ uh, make that two weeks ago.

Do you know "The Clarinets" with Chris Speed, Oscar Noriega, and Anthony Burr? Funky packaging, too, but not Hays Code material.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @Dean, that's that Skirl packaging -- DVD sized cases is their thing, for some reason. And outre design. Tough legibility, but cool looking.
