Hello D:O
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @duke! How you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:10am Andrew Waterloo:

good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:11am Andrew Waterloo:

@duke, last night I saw a man putting on a costume that looks like your avatar, was that you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:11am Jeff Golick:

'morning, @Andrew Waterloo!
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 9:15am duke:

@andrew Did he say "meep", was he working with Dr. Bunsen HoneyDew? If, so, it was me.
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 9:17am Richard from Venezuela:

Good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:19am Jeff Golick:

Hello and welcome, @Richard from Venezuela!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:19am Andrew Waterloo:

no, this may have been an imposter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:21am Andrew Waterloo:

I saw a couple great drones last night. One in an art gallery, and another in the remains of a victorian era prison yard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Whoa. Love that kind of site-specific thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:25am Jeff Golick:

re this Bajakian: "Bajakian's composition is based on Synthetic Formations that were given to Dr. Yusef Lateef in 1961 by saxophonist Eric Dolphy, and included in his book, the Repository of Scales and Melodic Patterns."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:25am Andrew Waterloo:

yah, same here
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 9:26am Richard from Venezuela:

Bandcamp is my spotify. Thanks for the links, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:27am Jeff Golick:

Yes! Me, too, @Richard. It's also the closest I've come in the digital sphere to replicating the "rummaging in a record store" experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:28am Jeff Golick:

I have found some tremendous stuff by "following" others and seeing what they've picked up.
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 9:29am Richard from Venezuela:

Agreed. It's like last.fm should be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:30am Jeff Golick:

Y'know, I was never able to grok last.fm - I still don't understand what it is to "scrobble."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:30am Andrew Waterloo:

It can be a bit overwhelming.. I follow people who buy a lot of stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:31am Jeff Golick:

Agreed. I think Ned Raggett might have a serious problem.
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 9:32am Richard from Venezuela:

And i love the record labels who share all their releases for streaming. Season of Mist and Relapse are good examples.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:32am Andrew Waterloo:

I like being able to look back at my last.fm and get a ense of what I listen to more. But, it doesn't do much else
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 9:34am Richard from Venezuela:

By the way, if you like latin jazz rock, this is a good release by a defunt venezuelan band. FREE DOWNLOAD; kre-music.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 9:35am duke:

I like this Joe McPhee cut a lot
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:36am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Richard. I actually have that record - perhaps due to your recommending it another time?
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 9:36am Richard from Venezuela:

hahahaha, sure. I forgot it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:37am Jeff Golick:

@duke: yup. You'd dig the whole thing, no doubt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:39am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 9:47am Polyus:

Heya Jeff, sounding good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:49am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that and welcome, @Revolution Rabbit Nov63! It's bad form to be as pedantic as I was and miss the central point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:50am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @doctorjazz, and welcome aboard, @Polyus! (And a head scratch to Ozzie.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:50am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:52am doctorjazz:

Beautiful day outside here in Jersey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 9:58am Jeff Golick:

Yeah it's lovely here in Brooklyn, too. I'm playing tennis later this afternoon, but it's under a bubble, unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:02am doctorjazz:

Still Bandcamp, Huh? Rise Chomsky is very cool. Check out some of these links later. How do you find them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:05am Jeff Golick:

How I find? Follow as many interesting labels/people as possible, mostly. Check release notices and see what other folks have bought. I think I have over a thousand items in my bandcamp wishlist.
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 10:07am coelacanth:

good morning Jeff and OUTies
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:07am Jeff Golick:

Wassup, @coelacanth?
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 10:18am coelacanth:

i was listening to "odradek 1" by Daniel Menche when i realised DO was on and started bringing up that Om Chomsky track while fading odradek. odradek got to 0 yet seemed to not want to fade out completely... quite baffling, until i relised that odradek and "unknown home alone i don't know" were perfectly in sinc, rhythm-wise.
-pretty good sound-wise too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:22am Jeff Golick:

That's very cool, @coel. Love when that happens. (Don't know Menche's work.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:24am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff and beatniks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:25am Jeff Golick:

Howdy, @Brian in UK! ::finger snaps::
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:28am Jeff Golick:

Just realizing that Flash Strap played this Pharaoh on his show last month...an autumn-themed program...and it looks like one for the ages.

Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 10:31am coelacanth:

Jeff, i thought i was a bit out of control with 104 items in my bandcamp wishlist. (& maybe another 50 bookmarked, but not in the wishlist)
...i guess not!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:33am doctorjazz:

Great track, the Sanders.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:33am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, it's an issue. Not sure if one needs to be logged in to bandcamp to see this, or if it's a public link, but here's the D:O wishlist: bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:35am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah really beautiful. I'm learning that Sanders has that tone & humanity in his expression that I love so much & respond instantaneously to in Coltrane. The sparse instrumentation & modal elements are striking...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:39am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& as I noted on Flash Strap's - there's a strong echo of Trane's 'Alabama' in here...
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 10:39am duke:

Gotta run. Thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:39am Jeff Golick:

Ta, @duke, and take care! Great to see you as always.
  Sun. 11/6/16 10:41am Dean:

In the '90s I read Fanfare magazine both for my job and for personal pleasure. It's a bimonthly classical music recording review magazine, from which I maintained a personal want-list in a notebook of v-e-r-y t-i-n-y graph paper. Probably approached ~1000 items, some of which would get crossed off, but mostly, no. Finally gave it up, because the logistics of seeking and finding became unsupportable, never mind actually affording the records. I have toyed with subscribing to Fanfare in recent months, perhaps to start the whole business over again. But now, come to think of it, I'll just use your Bandcamp list as my own.
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 10:42am coelacanth:

i've looked at your collection before! we have at least one mutual purchase. (though i don't remember what) i also share some items with Flashstrap, Gary Sullivan, Kurt Gottchalk, Clay Pidgeon... i'm sure others that are not recognizable. i'll have to peruse your wishlist one day when i have several days!
  Sun. 11/6/16 10:43am Dean:

Although I do have on an immediate want-list as of yesterday the new Acid Arab record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:43am Jeff Golick:

Hello, and welcome, @Dean. I'm almost completely unaware of what the bandcamp classical ecosystem is like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:46am Brian in UK:

I used to want a copy of Hair Pieces by Galt MacDermot. Even had a small copy of the LP sleeve in my wallet. No idea why. Never did get it. Sometimes wanting something is more important than getting it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:46am Andrew Waterloo:

drowning out the emotional torment of the election is ambitious
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:48am Brian in UK:

Good luck on Tuesday folks we have already had our election madness and how it drags on...and on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:48am Jeff Golick:

"Sometimes wanting something is more important than getting it." <<---- I like this a lot, @Brian.
  Sun. 11/6/16 10:49am Dean:

Fanfare reviewers were true authorities. One could rely on their enthusiasms to guide one's own. But still, acquiring a classical collection is complicated by reiteration. How many performances of Ockhegem's Missa Caput does one need? Turns out the answer could be, "A lot."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:49am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, what is going on now, @Brian? I haven't had time to properly take it in, but has the vote been overturned legislatively or something? Or being fought on prodcedural grounds?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:51am Andrew Waterloo:

the chase is better the catch
  Sun. 11/6/16 10:53am Dean:

Took me forever to find that Motorhead record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:58am Brian in UK:

No, senior judges state that it must be voted through the Houses of Parliament before Article 50 is actioned. It will go to the Supreme Court for appeal. None of the bluddy thing appeals to me. It is such a unique episode that anything is possible except a U-turn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 10:58am Brian in UK:

Andrew Travelling is better than arriving.
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 11:00am coelacanth:

in the 80s, when i had become disgusted with punk, pop, rock, etc. and was consuming masses of "world music" and reggae, the shanachie records catalogue was generally pretty honest and informative. every few months i'd take a drive to their warehouse in bonnton nj to pick up several dozen albums directly.
- kind of the opposite of rolling stone and nme, as far as respectable reviewers go.
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 11:02am coelacanth:

("boonton", not "bonnton")
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:02am Brian in UK:

'Give our country back to us' was the mantra of the Leave party. As if we had not invaded enough places around the world already. Remember the Commonwealth.
The 'Make America Great Again' campaign has the same hollow ring to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:03am Brian in UK:

Jeff this is one to play if you want to end the party early.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:05am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's unrelenting, dissonant - but not shrill. 1969 was fun & stress-free for all, apparently...It's natural we should resonate a bit now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:05am Jeff Golick:

Indeed, @Brian. Glad you're sticking around.
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 11:06am coelacanth:

this is the one to play if you want to do some weeding.
  Sun. 11/6/16 11:11am Dean:

You said, "Germany in 1968," and I thought, "Wouldn't it have been great if Brotzmann had played with Guru Guru." Now I'm thinking that could have happened.
  Sun. 11/6/16 11:12am Dean:

Mani Neumeier might have played with PB.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:13am doctorjazz:

Took a peak at the Bandcamp list, it will take a few days to get through. Don't know most of the performers there (so much for being up on my music, bit humbling...)
Brotzman-music for headphones in the house (very poor WAF-Wife Accepatance Factor).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:16am Jeff Golick:

re "Make American Great Again" etc.: one of the slippier parts of all this is the coded language - "great" for who, exactly, and in what way? It's assumed.

The underlying distrust of "facts"; "truth"; or even a common narrative is really horrifying to behold. It's the triumph of some kind of post-modernist thought, I guess, taken to its most disturbing and extreme end-point.

I thought this was a good take on it: theawl.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:19am Jeff Golick:

@RRN63: yes, re Paris 69 resonances

@drjazz: to be honest, I don't know most of the performers, either

@Dean: Germany 68-73?74? seems to have been a special place/time in spacetime
  Sun. 11/6/16 11:19am Dean:

Nothing postmodernist at all about it. It's just good old-fashioned American snake oil sales in the PT Barnum mode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:20am Jeff Golick:

Adam Curtis's latest film also addresses the demise of commonly held "truths." In the digital age, everyone can have their own narrative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:21am Brian in UK:

Jeff what I found most despicable were the lies told by the Leave campaign who then deny any knowledge after the vote. Appealing to the LCD of bar room wiseacres.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:21am Jeff Golick:

@drjazz: this Machine Gun is pretty much what my wife thinks of when I say "jazz" now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:22am Jeff Golick:

@Brian: one runs out of synonyms for "spineless weasels."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:24am Brian in UK:

You must remember that Germany at this time was a rather forlorn place with the Red Army Faction soon to be formed in 1970. The new post WW11 generation trying to finds its place in the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:25am Jeff Golick:

That riff at the end of MG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:26am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- that's funny how they riff on 'Mercy Mercy'...Hard Bop / Soul Jazz it ain't...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:28am Brian in UK:

So, Dire Straits next. Just kidding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:28am Jeff Golick:

re this Sharrock/Machine Gun album: "This album is composed of live recordings from: the GAS STATION, CBGB'S, the COURT TAVERN and WMFU, WKCR, WRTC radio stations. All tracks improvised live."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:31am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Here we go. Best Electric Guitar Ever?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:32am doctorjazz:

Machine Gun is really intense-someone should hooked Brozmann and Hendrix up.
(I wrote that before the track played...)

I agree there is nothing post modern
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:33am Jeff Golick:

@RRN63: no argument here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:35am Brian in UK:

S'funny how you can admire someone even though they play an instrument that you do not care much for. Except when played by East Africans.
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 11:35am coelacanth:

if Hendrix & Brotzmann had collaborated they would've exploded and then we'd have neither one of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:36am doctorjazz:

...nothing new about repeating lies over and over and getting them accepted as gospel, unfortunately. What's a bit new is the ability to create an echo chamber on media and the internet so that only your lies get through (even that is not completely new, it just took dictatorial power to control the media up to now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:38am Brian in UK:

I might go as far as to write that James Marshall Hendrix was the worse thing that happened to the electric guitar. Because he left such a big hole after his demise no one has had the boots to fill it. (Mix those metaphors boy)
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 11:38am coelacanth:

(Jimi's "born under a bad sign" & "hear my train [electric]" [both on the "blues" compilation] may be my favorite electric git solos of all time.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:38am Jeff Golick:

Oh, @Brian, you're not going to like the next (short) one either.... But there's something to what you say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:39am Brian in UK:

Alright well he did leave everyone a short but intoxicating legacy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:40am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

True - a lot like 'Trane passing in '67 for Jazz & sax: So - now whut?!
@coel: That 'Hear My Train' - it's Gospel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:41am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz/@Dean: I guess it's not new, or "post-modern," however one understands that word. But it feels like there is something new happening, a rejection of reality, or a disconnect from it -- or if not new, then worsening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:42am Andrew Waterloo:

finally, a proper album by these guys triggertrigger.bandcamp.com... protoges of John Zorn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:43am Brian in UK:

@Rev the difference for me is that the first jazz record I bought, 'Coltrane Jazz' after I absorbed it knew that it was going to be a friend for life. Not many times does that happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:43am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:45am Brian in UK:

@Dean when our daughter went to Vietnam she came back with a bottle of Snake Wine, complete with a snake. Tasted awful. Post modern beverages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:46am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yes - I explain my love of Jazz by saying Trane & Monk are 'Home' - as surely as The Beatles & Hendrix. Point is I think Trane dying was for Jazz a lot like Hendrix saying for Rawk...It had reached its' Spiritual & Masterful peak - & what then?...
Avatar Sun. 11/6/16 11:47am coelacanth:

(that *sounded* like it was in the red!)
  Sun. 11/6/16 11:48am Dean:

Truly, I think it a species of presentism to claim too novel or special a cynicism for our time. It affords us an excuse to relinquish our past. Read the notes from the constitutional convention or even the Federalist papers. Our founding dads were often loony-tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:51am Brian in UK:

Agreed, @Dean, despite comments to the contrary, re present-ism. But one's experience as felt in the now -- well, it's hard to take the long view sometimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:56am Jeff Golick:

Brilliant as always, Jeff. Thanks!

Cheers, comrades, and Good Luck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/6/16 11:57am doctorjazz:

Didn't get to jazz until the mid 70's, Trane was already gone, and I had taken a "Jazz Appreciation"course in college, so Bird, and Satch were as much signposts as Trane. I actually wondered a bit why everyone was sounding like Trane at that point, went for the World Sax Quartet and Lester Bowie/Art Ensemble. Took a while for Trane's influence to meld with others, as it had with Bird.
Great Show, have a great week
Best of Luck to Fred as well!
