Hello Doug, Somehow this gif is still endearing. Reminds me of the Canadian German Shepherd being teased with bacon and other meats.

hi drummers!

Present company excluded, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

The grab-you-by-the-throat clarity of this field recording is what gets me. The background sounds of human and animal activity only enhance the proceedings.

It is a GOOD DAY now that you're here, FLASH STRAP.

Karl Blau was a great 2016 turn on..modest in ambition, but direct to the heart. Evokes Glen Campbell/Jimmy Webb to me.

I bought a few of these Kelp records at a Laura Veirs show
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:12am Brian in UK:

Hello Gary, I was looking at Flash Straps avatar earlier and it got me thinking of Ankor Wat, not a million miles from you. Our daughter went there a few years ago. You need a bicycle to get around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am melinda:

That would explain why Laura Veirs videos appeared on my youtube page after viewing/listening to Karl Blau. Which was nice, as I wasn't familiar with her music before. There are some charming animations in a couple of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am melinda:

hi Gary, how is Luang Prabang?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Doesn't the beginning of this Najat Aâtabou cut sound like the opening of the "Mission Impossible" theme?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

I am enjoying your vacation vicariously! Keep the photos coming!
  10:15am Gary:

@Brian, we saw a model of Angkor Wat in Bangkok
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

Bix composed "In a Mist" and released it as a record in 1927. And he performed it ON PIANO!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:59am Brian in UK:

Love Bix's Barnacle Bill. Put that on the end of mixtapes (CDs)
  11:04am Dean:

Don't tell me: it's a class in Slave Capitalism. Law school texts are generally worthless outside of the classroom. It's not as if they are an investment to which you'd turn during your career.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

No, Dean, it is a class on human behavior in the field of gerontology.
Avatar 11:11am quinn:

"Let's listen to some gamelan" -- my five favorite words
Avatar 🥁 11:11am bobdc:

I recently found a local gamelan and joined. Not as fancy as what we're hearing, but a lot of fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Glad I said them in that order, quinn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
The Univ. of Pittsburgh has a fine student gamelan crew. It's led by Andrew Weintraub, who is a faithful educator of Indonesian musics. I learned a while back that he was pals with Henk den Toom, proprietor of the wonderful blog Madrotter.

And Henk den Toom is the source for the next selection on today's show!
  11:18am Dean:

If I could rewind to, say, my twenties or even thirties, I would strongly consider studying gerontology and related fields (e.g., elder law). Also, architectural acoustics, and of course poetry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Seeing as already qualify for the "senior" discount for Pittsburgh Pirates tickets, I figure gerontology is the field for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am coelacanth∅greetings:

the javanese gamelan (presumably that was javanese?) is so relaxing to me. i think other people here were wondering what that clanging was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

Relaxing and clanging are not mutually exclusive here!
  11:23am Dean:

@Doug: Tell the truth: you wrote in your personal statement for your grad school apps that you were primarily interested in gerontology for the senior discounts, didn't you? I proudly display my (yet unaccepted) AARP invitations on my office door, adjacent to a news clipping about Lemmy's failing health.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:25am Brian in UK:

The Gamelan I referred to at 10:19 all have players from locals around Angkor Wat. Non professionals. The music is part of their lives.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:26am Brian in UK:

Is this Turkey's Eurovision entry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

No soul set today. Instead, next week's show will comprise all of the closing songs of the soul sets from all of 2016. It will be a soultacular.
