I watched The Devil and Daniel Johnston last night. That guy completely flew under my radar. What an interesting and sad fella.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am
Bronwyn Bishop:

pantz, daniel johnston led me to discover wfmu. that's a great movie. but agreed, very sad. I considered one of his songs (Worried Shoes) sort of a personal anthem as a teenager, but I only knew the cover by Karen O. When I heard Daniel's version a couple of years later it blew my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am
pantz:

I had the opposite experience. WFMU helped me discover Daniel. Just another reason to love and support this station. His music certainly is earnest and honest, if not troubled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am
pantz:

I'll have to check out the Karen O cover. Thx @Bronwyn!

Yes...I am not ashamed to say I cried at the end of the Daniel Johnston Movie...Very sad...but his songs can be amazing...I recommend The Recid "Dead Dog's Eyeball"

I saw the Devil and Daniel Johnston some years ago but wasn't aware of WFMU then so I don't remember any reference to it, would be good to watch again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am
Bronwyn Bishop:

I don't think FMU is mentioned in the movie, at least not that I remember. The way it happened for me was that Daniel led me to become a fan of outsider music, which led me to Irwin's book on the topic, which was where I learned about FMU for the first time.

Remember when Tim Dog beat up DJ Quik on his record?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am

I believe the documentary was produced by someone at WFMU. That's the connection I was aware of.

Hiya, Marty and McSorleys: such a cover!

Mark R:

The cover of "Music from 'Lil Brown'" looks like it was designed by the same guy who did "Music from Big Pink." That was a cool, weird, version of "Paint It Black," though. I dug it.

Everything you're playing is right in my wheelhouse this a.m. sir. Hey I just remembered one time about 6 months ago you played this heavy drum tune by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, an album that I had let slip out of my collection for some reason, and about a week later I saw it at Amoeba records in L.A. and bought a used CD of it for like $3! You were my inspiration for that bargain purchase.

Love the new Sabbath releases and live versions, but I always love the original version of Paranoid. Flawless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am
Marcel M:

And to think Paranoid was written on the spot cuz the record needed a single... amazing. Just an incredible group!
Avatar 🥊 Swag For Life Member 11:48am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Black Sabbath, yes!
  11:49am
JakeGould:

That new 4CD box of "Paranoid"
Is great mainly for the live stuff. The Quad downmix sounds like crap.

This Uniform record gets spun a bunch 'round my home.

Uniform is definitely on my to-see list. Another great comparison across the decades.
