"Heinz Koch, writing for Musica, said that the symphony 'drags through three old folk melodies (and nothing else) for an endless 55 minutes.' Górecki himself recalled that, at the premiere, he sat next to a "prominent French musician" (Górecki did not name names, though it was probably Pierre Boulez), who, after hearing the twenty-one repetitions of an A-major chord at the end of the symphony, loudly exclaimed 'Merde!'"

I remember when Nonesuch released the CD in '92 that brought the piece to our attention. Yes. there was a lot of nose upturning at the time. I myself have been slow to appreciate it, but then when the Stetson piece started I thought, "Aaron Copland"? That opening phrase feels right out of Copland's score for "Our Town." I suspect some die-hard classical listeners poo-poo Copland, too, for his sometimes schmaltzy, programmatic, Hollywood-ized work. But I love it.

Some people, I suspect, like classical music for it's *lack* of emotion (as they experience it), and the faintest whiff of sentiment gives them the vapors.

Well, the avant-garde crowd (Boulez being the icon) eschew emotion. (Just last night I was able to use "eschew" on a comment board, and now again. It has been a good weekend.) But I suspect it's the wrong kind of emotion, not manly enough. See Beethoven.

interesting you say that jeff, i find so much sentiment in most music. each piece is created from some deep thing. discovering that "source" through someone else's experience is deep and a compliment to the creator. i work hard to appreciate all music, some is easier than others.

Apologies for an excursus on Copland, but I just checked Jan Swafford's marvelous Vintage Guide to Classical Music on him. Lots of interesting points/coincidences. Copland was born in 1900 in...Brooklyn! Early in his career he incorporated jazz elements into his music. But, per Swafford, "By the 1930s Copland had established a solid reputation among the relatively few people who followed avant-garde music. But he began to be unhappy with his isolation from the mainstream. Stimulated by left-wing ideas that proliferated in America during the Deptression, he began to look for a style that would be closer to the people." And "Copland's most ambitious work for orchestra" was his...Third Symphony.
