"You're welcome". To what? You are welcome to my consideration, to my help, my personal regard. "You're welcome" lifts one from servile gratitude to a peer relation with the other. Consider these alternatives: "No problem". If it were, would you have let the door slam in my face or given me incorrect change? "Sure". Was the truth value of my Thank you ever in question? "You got it". Do I?

"No problem" implies that there could be a problem, that he/she will graciously choose to overlook.
  11:34am
Little Fyodor:

Something to consider about "no problem". In Spanish "de nada" is the response. Literally it means "it's nothing", pretty much the same thing. Is everyone speaking Spanish being impolite? (My point is "no" in case there's any question!)
  11:34am
Dean:

The problem now with "You're welcome" is that it happens to be the refrain from the latest Disney smash movie soundtrack, akin to "Let it go" a couple years ago.
  11:35am
Dean:

Too bad the Disney writers didn't appropriate "No problem."
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 11:35am

I dunno.. Berlin is famous for impolite service, or rather disinterested service, which can be annoying. But then when I visited the States recently, getting "HIHOWAREYOU!!!" shouted at me any place I entered got on my nerves more quickly. I also wasn't too charmed with being asked whether I'm okay every five minutes, especially since everyone knows it's just policy (stimulating consumption/tips)
, nothing to do with genuine politeness. It's a personal preference I guess.

Hi all. Michael's premium hits CDs are siempre fun. As for "no problem", that sorta bothers me (tho tone and body gesture are important too). I can get strict on "number of" vs "amount of", or if "meddling" or "subtlety" has 2or3 syllables, or the overuse of "through the lens of", but I try not to think about it too much. Esp when I enjoy playing w wurdz and da rules of grandma. Fin.

...tho' I would rather be asked too much than not enuff - yerknow - it' just possible someone might want more coffee, if it never quite occurred to you @ such a place...& so on...
A great song is catnip to Artists - a Cover should show me something / make me feel something new or different about the song...&/or just plain dazzle by comparison - tho' a faithful cover can possibly impress that way (like if it's hard to do).
  11:52am
Clarke:

i think my recent aversion to covers (hey, i love playing them - they are FUN to do!) has to do with WHY someone is choosing to release a cover instead of writing something new.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am

  11:55am

i think that doing a covers 'album' for a cause is a fine idea, btw -- i mean, a specific project with those parameters i can get behind. also, there is a lot of taste going into the mix with MS's comps

Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Wow, great Slade cover! As much as it pains me to do so, this will in all likelihood necessitate my pledging to this show.

@davefromtoronto: Too many criteria, but original songs that evoke some direct aspect of the Beatles' canon — chord changes, production, vocal harmonies (the more, the fab-er).

bettie serveert toured extensively in the states for years. no more. haven't been here in at least 6 years and say they won't be back citing expenses and hassles with visas etc. truly great band that gigs all the time in the netherlands.

@Clarke: I've been watching Laugh-In on the Decades channel lately, so I'll be going full Pigmeat when it comes to judging.
  12:28pm
Clarke:

howsa bout a MS box set???
  12:30pm
Clarke:

@Pigmeat - if you wanna share how to watch FULL laugh-in episodes here - i won't judge

really excited to here from dirty looks drummer peter parker. stiff records first american band and staten islanders at that!

are there any bands that had big careers exploiting the "fake beatles" formula?

besides the rutles.

The third original covered on "Seconds Of Pleasure"...slick move trying to see if anyone is paying attention.

i guess the Decades channel would involve owning a television??

Gaylord, your going full pigmeat is a rare event. You still indulge in your annual hot dog?

Hmmm… Motown beat Rockpile "Heart"? or Nick The Knife reggae Nick Lowe "Heart"?

@JJJ: I've slacked off on my one hot dog a year since Gray's Papaya closed. But in November I ate a White Castle burger in honor of Billy Miller.

love that you played rockpile! i was digging all the other songs from seconds of pleasure already.

@davefromtoronto: There have been hits here and there, but not really a sustained hitmaking career for anyone I can recall.
Avatar 12:38pm
Todd-o-phonic Todd:

To be fair...I think "Seconds Of Pleasure" sounds better today than it did upon release. The big problem for me was that I felt both Edmunds and Lowe were doing solo albums at that time with better material.

One thing about Covers : sooo many Originals I wouldn't have known about w/out them. Hopefully not then the 'Pat Boone Effect' of stealing their marketshare...

And I only got my typcial post-White Castle wooziness from back when I was carnivorous instead of especially sick.

Clarke:

to me, todd, it was ALL Rockpile - they just figured out a way to get a ton of releases sneakily.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Uncle Michael:

Exactly, Todd. The Rockpile album came too late. If they could have done it at the time of the Labour of Lust/Repeat When Necessary sessions, it could have been something great.
  12:42pm
Clarke:

i mean, the same guys play on all those records

i don't know - i think that "one" Rockpile record got a ton of acclaim and sales....
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
Uncle Michael:

Clarke, they couldn't record as Rockpile before then because Nick and Dave had separate contracts with different labels. They were each hording the best material for their own albums. They weren't being sneaky.

yeah - i know - but it is the same band on all those records. that's pretty unsneakily sneaky

what's Roxy & Duke's all about todd?? sounds like an interesting venue...
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Uncle Michael:

For example, Dave recorded "Endless Gray Ribbon" for Repeat, Nick decided he liked it too much and took it back. They weren't finding a way to make extra, secret Rockpile records...they were bandmates, but competitive. Nothing sneaky about this at all. They had separate obligations.
