Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

The Navatman Music Collective (NMC) is a vocal group that - rather unusually - performs choral arrangements of South Indian classical music. They have a wonderful debut album out called An Untimely Joy.

Their parent cultural organization, Navatman, puts on the acclaimed Drive East Festival of South Asian music and dance at La Mama every August, as well as other events and programs throughout the year. Such as: a free family-friendly music-theatre performance, The Tales of Akbar and Birbal, featuring the NMC and their sister Dance Collective, in Queens on Sunday afternoon March 19th.

More info:

We have two pairs of tickets available to see Noura Mint Seymali in a concert presented by the World Music Institute at Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street in the West Village, Friday February 24th, 7 pm doors, 8 pm show.

From the presenter’s site: Noura Mint Seymali is one of Mauritania’s foremost musical emissaries and national star of the West African country. Born into a lineage of significant moorish griots, a class of traveling poets, musicians, and storytellers who maintain a tradition of oral history in parts of West Africa, Noura’s career began at age 13 as a supporting vocalist to her legendary step-mother Dimi Mint Abba. Her grandmother trained her in musical technique and Noura mastered the ardine, a traditional 9-string harp reserved for women. Having performed on stages across the world, and by collaborating with African music greats, Noura Mint Seymali has established herself as one of the next generation’s most promising artists and an unforgettable voice of Africa. “…creating a mesmerizing tension between ancient and futuristic.” – The Chicago Reader

Event info here.

We also have two pairs of tickets available to see Gisela João presented by Live Sounds in association with Fado Festival NYC at Pace University Schimmel Center, 3 Spruce Street (near the Brooklyn Bridge), Saturday February 25th at 7:30 pm.

From the venue site: Gisela João’s passionate voice is infused with the deepest essence of fado, the universally adored Portuguese blues, traditionally associated with Lisbon’s pubs and cafés, and renowned for its expressive and profoundly melancholic character. Considered one of today’s most important interpreters of fado, Gisela’s first album was universally praised and instantly reached the number one spot on the Portuguese charts. Soon after she was awarded the nation’s highest musical honor, the “Prémio Amália” awards, for Best New Artist. Her second album will be released this year. Gisela will be joined by her ensemble Bernardo Couto, Portuguese guitar; Aleixo Fado, viola, and Francisco Gaspar, acoustic bass. “Since Amalia Rodrigues – and I am weighing my words carefully – no fado singer has had the emotional range displayed by Gisela João on her impressive debut album.” - João Miguel Tavares in Time Out

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm хтinа:

Listening from the archives.. Interesting to note that there was quite a bit of crossover appeal between bollywood/Roma music from that time period, too. Wish I understood half the lyrics in these songs but I know "A Bre Babi" was a personal one for Esma about her emancipation from child marriage, one of songs that propelled her career. Nice homage to an amazing figure in music.
