Appreciate this - as Larry Coryell's has always been held in high deference amongst guitarists - but I confess my ignorance of the facts & details of his accomplishments, & I think I'm not quite alone in that. The common tag is he's a Father of Fusion...So, Thanks.

	9:11pm Mark R: He started out as a fairly straight-ahead jazz guitarist, Rev, but then he heard Hendrix in 1966 (I think before he was famous, when he was playing in the Village), and it opened his mind to all kinds of possibilities. Irene's starting with a couple of seminal examples--early recordings that kind of sum up his greatness--a true fusion of jazz, rock, blues, even country styles. And yes, he played LOUD.

Seems a fair guess that he hasn't been played & heard like say McLaughlin (even tho' a close collaborator) because he didn't appeal as easily to a specific Genre Market - the very reason he may interest - some of 'us'...

Although, interestingly enough, I was just talking about him to Jeff Conklin a few weeks ago, and he said, "Not overlooked by ME." Although I haven't heard Jeff play him on his show.

	♥ 9:21pm Irene Trudel: Hi All! I felt it appropriate to pay tribute to Larry Coryell, whose music I discovered through my HS radio station .He was a big influence on me. Saw him play live a number of times over the years. Yes, Mark, Larry did play with McLaughlin on Spaces. The album collaboration predates the Mahavishnu Orchestra by two years. So I'm going to dive into Coryell's music for a while tonight.
	9:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63: ...I read 'true fusion of jazz, rock, blues, even country' - & I think Danny Gatton - but this is nothing of that kind!...I think a lot of Guitarists would like to believe they have such a range! Gatton started @ Rockabilly, & sounds like Coryell starts solidly from Jazz & moves from there...I'll see where we go here!
	9:23pm Mark R: Love it, and I can't think of a better person to do it. I was in high school too, and had an older brother who was into Hendrix, Cream et. al and then one day Mahavishnu and Coryell appeared on the scene, the logical next step. I still think they're all great.

Rawk went thru Punk & still is suspicious of 'Musos' - & Jazz had a rebirth w/ the fairly Straight-Ahead 'young lions' (there were undergrounds that liked crime or aggro Jazz relating actually to Punk &tc.) Among players & real music junkies - there's appreciation of Artists w/ both dynamics & king-sized chops...Fusion gets blamed for SmoothJazz & the neutering of what Jazz really is - but this here clearly has nothing to do w/ that!

	9:39pm Mark R: I saw him one time where he also played PIANO believe it or not--also not his strong suit. But he was brave, I'll give him that.

	9:47pm Mark R: You're really playing all my favorite Coryell tunes, Irene! Also used to really enjoy "At the Village Gate" and another live album recorded at Montreux with Pretty Purdie on drums called "Fairyland." Pretty sure that one's out of print now, though.

	9:53pm Snake: I've seen Frisell twice and Coryell once. Frisell was always good but Larry was legendary. I'm shocked he's gone.

	10:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63: Starting to think comparing Coryell to McLaughlin is (in a different area) like comparing Page to Beck: They're close - but like siblings, they took paths to distinguish themselves from each other - relating to their natural inclinations too: One went w/ developing content via varied inspirations, while the other focused more specifically on pure technical playing. I say DiMeola may have a slight speed advantage on McLaughlin - even tho' McLaughlin is more disciplined then nearly anyone there's ever been - but McLaughlin didn't let it make him 'cold'. Now in a way - I'm surprised Coryell wasn't as well-known generally as McLaughlin - because altho' he's technically stunning also - he seems even closer to broad inspirations & feeling - relating to the anecdote that it was Hendrix directly who set him on another path...I think - in a way, Jazz was Horn music, banjos early on were loud enuff to keep a Rhythm - & the Electric Guitar has been eyed w/ suspicion: stick to your archtops & WesMontgomery tone or be fined - tho' BillFrissell ferinstance (a master of tones) illustrates how old hat that is by now - it has had to evolve in people's heads for decades...
