Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from March 21, 2017 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

hey, is there a guide somewhere to all the celebrities on the home page? I can guess all but two.
  3:05pm

is that a "Final Day" sample?!
  3:05pm

It's listed on the playlist archive, Cecile:

Cecile: Mary listed them in the comments of the Hoof & Mouth playlist... OR i know them all. which two?
Avatar 3:06pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

now then: Who has Marathon Victory Carrot-Cake?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
Guido from Cologne:

Hello evrybody!
would you believe the Roland Etzin's track translates to "water"?
Lyrics are about cooking an egg.
the egg is bursting, which is spooky.
Avatar 3:07pm
Cecile:

thanks, Mary! One was who I thought it was, the other two escaped me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm

hey brian and everybody :)

Wow this is so close to a firehose vibe
Avatar 3:09pm

Guten tag!
I am now 3% fluent in German now, according to Duolingo. Which means I can say yes, no and "they are not cats"
  3:09pm
tomasz.:

honestly i only would have known half of them if it weren't for other people guessing them around me. especially the bottom row
  3:10pm
tomasz.:

oh my god please ignore the mangled grammar of that sentence
Avatar 3:10pm
Cecile:

The Alan Vega completely eluded me because he was so fresh-faced!
Avatar 3:10pm
Cecile:

Tomasz, looks fine to me. I couldn't write anything that coherent in German.
Avatar 3:12pm
Cecile:

Sie sind keine Katzen!

Mary Wing:

I had to google "Bienhoa," heh. Alan was the first picture.
Avatar 3:12pm
Cecile:

he looked kind of like Ralph Macchio or someone from Menudo.
Avatar 3:14pm
Cecile:

Ok, you lovely German speakers. How do you remember what "the" goes with what word? Is it completely random?
Avatar 3:14pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Funny, Cecile: I just downloaded Duolingo & was going to start on the German. ...After all these years, it's about time I figured out what Grobschnitt were laughing about between songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm
Fuzzy:

Yes, Cecile -- I thought it was the Karate Kid at first too. I also didn't get Debbie Reynolds, Alan Wakeman or Phife Dog. Just noticed Mr. Berry in the pyramid -- nice. Where's Mary Tyler Moore?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm
Asheville Jon:

always nice to hear Wild Man on FMU
Avatar 3:16pm
Lopez:

Wild Man is great!
Avatar 3:17pm
Cecile:

Rev, you will laugh at me, but I want to translate Conchita Wurst's between-song patter. I know my fellow nuts, I mean admirers do some translating, but I'd just like to get some of the nuances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
Guido from Cologne:

was Wild Man exploited by Zappa?
Avatar 3:18pm
Cecile:

It's usually Russian people translating German into Engligh, and it lacks a little...something.

I dunno. I think Zappa treated him OK, but Fischer was kind of beyond the pale. He probably should have never had any public career, which pains me because I love his music.
Avatar 3:20pm
Cecile:

Rev, we can be our own little bad-German practice group on Duolingo. I can talk to you about it offline.
Avatar 3:20pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

I get the feeling Zappa left behind a high body-count of exploitation subjects.
Avatar 3:21pm
Cecile:

I think it was more "hey, this music should get out regardless, cause it's great." And he didn't consider the human cost that much.
Avatar 3:22pm
Cecile:

I'm not the hugest fan of the guy's music, but I have to thank him for getting Beefheart out there.
Avatar 3:23pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Finally got around to hearing Edgard Varèse last year, & ears couldn't get FZ's sonic ghosts out of it. Impossible to filter out the Zappa. But yes, the Beefheart thing = infinite yay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
Ike:

Best Marley cover ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm

I love to feed phonetical gibberish to the Google translator and having it read in German, English, french, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, etc. accent.
Avatar 3:23pm

They should cover every marley song ever.
Avatar 3:24pm
Cecile:

ooh, great idea Guido!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Oscar:

Delurking because I always forget how great that first Wild Man record is. It's interesting to contrast his relationships with Zappa and Barnes & Barnes-- IIRC, Bill Mumy was his legal guardian for the final few years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Guido from Cologne:

@cecile
If you don't have access to umlauts, add an 'e' after the vocal.
"Sie sind keine Voegel." ... would be correct spelling.
Avatar 3:37pm

Awesome, Guido!!!!

what do you do when you don't have that special squiggly "s"?

  4:15pm

I guess the playlist doesn't recognize a lone question mark as a title; perhaps Brian can rename it as "untitled" or "mystery track" so the star will appear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
Threemoons:

Linda, thanks! About to head out to a late dinch. LOVE that Totensonnen! I gotta say, I have bought about $100 worth of indie music last week just from stuff I discovered during the telethon! Oh, and BOWIE. YEAH.

Hey Cecile, I speak pretty good German. The articles (der, die and das) have no apparent rhyme or reason, at least to me. Die is always used with the plural.

I know, it's not like Spanish. That's pretty easy to figure out. Very few exceptions to the rule, and they either make sonic or linguistic sense. Just about every word that has "ma" at the end is masculine because I guess they're derived from Greek. So I would remember "your ma's a man" to remember to use the masculine article.
