Here's the scalpel, doctorjazz. Let's do this!
  9:04am Listener Robert:

Is it just my setup or the way I'm handling it, or does the GTD stream off the context-dependent main WFMU page continue to play automated GTDS programming after the programs start? It's possible I just caused what I was getting to be buffered.
  9:07am melinda:

Hi Doug and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, melinda! Greetings, Listener Robert!

@Listener Robert
The Drummer Stream plays a continuous flow of sem-automated sounds. When a live show comes on the stream, that sound source hooks in "downstream" from the continuous flow, which is still running behind it. If the connection of the live programming buffers, it could kick you back to the always running flow behind it. Does that answer your question?

In a story about the many rock figures offering statements/tributes/tweets on Berry's death. I found it extremely weird when after including an Alice Cooper tweet, the reporter says parenthetically, "Cooper being well-known to some of us for this legendary cameo." Then had a link to a Wayne's World movie clip with Alice. I say WTF...Do they give prizes for tangents that are 99.9% irrelevant and 110% unsuited?

The death of journalism, still b/p.

Hallo, Uncle Paradiddle!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:52am Uncle Michael:

still b/p, we've had this conversation. CLEARLY, that's the author's only frame of reference for Alice, and the assumption i that's so for the readership. It's rather insulting and thoroughly shitty journalism. If there's an appropriate shorthand description, it's probably along the lines of "'70s shock-rocker". If a reader is curious about they, they can google.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:58am doctorjazz:

The Muldaurs, really like this track (never knew they released an album together before they split).
  9:59am Gary:

Omg, I remember having this on record. Is this a conscious riffing off the Louie Louie lyrics?
Avatar 9:59am annie:

i was watching "The Ballad of Jack and Rose" last night, such a great movie, i'd forgotten the soundtrack is most excellent, it includes some Dylan that fits very well in the mood of the film.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:59am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

When is your Louie Louie special happening, Gary?
Avatar 10:01am still b/p:

Here's another recent frame-of-reference doozy. I say it's WILDLY incorrect and I was vexed and put out about it for a few days, bitching about it to bemused others:
"While cellphones have made photography commonplace today, few people owned cameras in the 1940s."
The writer...how could she...what is she...where would that....????

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:15am Uncle Michael:

The court rules that the statute of limitations has run out on that being Johnny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

Yes, WFMU once gave away as a premium a videocassette with footage of CB doing number 1 on some willing participants. I said they were underage, but actually I don't remember how young they were. I'm sure Google could clear this up in about 3.2 seconds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

Wikipedia says Johnny Johnson was in piano on Wee Wee Hours: en.wikipedia.org...
  10:17am Listener Gregory:

Yes, "Wee Wee" seems piano-based and the vocal sounds more like Johnson to me (or even Charles Brown, though I don't think he ever backed Chuck). The record publisher may have "promoted" Berry from backup guitarist to leader.

Radio has always been a source of discovery (and inspiration). What you own you already know, so the the sense of discovery is obviously much weaker. One might think that one has heard a lot over the yerars. but the average WFMU playlist is at least 80 per cent completely unknown.

Well, I wouldn't mind hearing "Viola Lee Blues" again. Possibly, my fave Dead tune, though not much of a tune, really. Just an excuse to jump into 20 minutes of improv. Which is fine with me. I just got a 50th anniversary edition of the debut album which has an extra cd of a Vancouver concert from mid-66. With "Viola Lee Blues" of course. The Dead was bluesy in those days!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Webhamster Henry:

@Doug - I see! Well, the more the Nina-ier!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

Lincoln has been very gentle on me. I am blessed.

1985 is the centerpoint of the universal timeline.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:16am doctorjazz:

Closet Dead fan here, just saw Phil Lesh and Friends last week, Stanley Jordan on guitar (was interesting having Jordan there-half the time he was amazing, the other half he seemed a bit lost. Not so different from Jerry Garcia in the day, come to think of it...)

2002 seems like a lifetime ago for me, but strangely, 2000 seems like yesterday.

For sure, UM.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:20am Alex In Illinois:

I read that singing over piano was also the case with Nat King Cole too. I read that he made some recordings of excellent instrumental jazz piano, but the record company was like: "As long as your singing brings in so much more revenue, we're not going to bother releasing any of this other stuff."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome welcome, northguineahills!
Avatar 11:21am Lewis:

@UM - based on my limited knowledge of both, I imagine Simone to be more thoughtful and risk-taking wrt choices?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:21am Uncle Michael:

Perhaps so.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:22am doctorjazz:

Nat Cole Trio made some great jazz records, (he did both instrumental and vocal recordings), but the popularity of the vocals caused it to become the main event.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz and Alex in Illinois
Yes absolutely. Nat Cole actually had to sign contracts that forbid him from being credited on piano (if I am remembering correctly).
  11:24am Gary:

What's this crazy guitar-action?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:25am Uncle Michael:

Interestingly, Ray Charles' earliest records were imitations of the Cole Trio sound, well after Nat found commercial glory elsewhere.

OT: A sentence I just read in a book: "In one of his most famous poems, Philip Larkin talks about sexual intercourse being invented in 1963." I am ignorant, and intrigued.

Douggie!!!!!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:29am Uncle Michael:

Jeff, that's eminently scrutable.
  11:30am Dean:

Larkin's poetry is really all that. "High Windows" has a notorious opening quatrain, but "Annus Mirabilis" is the one you want. Mentions The Beatles, too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

Jaki Liebezeit, very nearly a perfect drummer. (There is no such thing as a perfect drummer.) Conveyed so much more than just drums, or percussion or rhythm. He created environments.

You remember the old W.C. Fields joke: "Second prize is two weeks in Philadelphia. First prize is one week in Philadelphia"?

Well tracks like this make me think: "Second prize, 10 minutes of Waiting for the Streetcar. First prize, 20 minutes of Waiting for the Streetcar."

A lot of streetcars in the US were made by the St. Louis car company.

I remember when Pittsburgh still had streetcars in the 1970's. Some of them were painted in Peter Max designs.
