Of course if you closed them entirely to humans, how would we ever know what was in them? Remote-controlled probes?

By the end of the show, we must all declare we know the difference between a stalagmite and a stalactite!

What's our guess?

Avatar 7:32pm

@Brian: haha I wish I could!! I would have being doing it the whole time if I could do even a passable Werner Herzog.
@Kate: oh, definitely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Stalactites hang from the ceiling (they need to hang on tight) and stalagmites are the other ones.
Avatar 7:34pm

I always think stalagMITES. like mites that crawl on the ground!

Ken From Hyde Park:

I hung up a bat house on a tree in my yard about a dozen years ago. I don't think any bats ever nested in it. It fell down last fall. I should find another place for it.
Avatar 7:38pm
kimzilla & emily:

@ Ken from HP: she talks about bat houses later on in here! I didn't even know about them before.
Avatar 7:38pm
βrian:

I can tell you, bats really like Arvo Pärt. A small group used to live in the wall behind my speakers.

They would sing along.
Avatar 7:39pm
kimzilla & emily:

@Brian: haha! that's wonderful. they like Egyptian Shumba, too ;)
  7:39pm

If you listen really carefully you can hear Dave the Spazz in the background.
Avatar 7:40pm

Daughter and I spied a bat the other day at dusk. So many have succumbed to the white nose fungus that it was reassuring to see one ... what a trooper!
When mom bats go out flying, the pup clings to her and goes out on the ride.

Avatar 7:46pm

The last time we had a bat in the house, my cat set point. The bat was sleepy, so I could gently scoop it in a pair of gloves and take it outside.

See you next time. Same bat-time; same bat-channel!
  8:34pm
Listener Robert:

This was great radio. I do tell Steve here (a WFMU listener but not, yet, to your program) your show is frequently very interesting, and even when it's not a "grabber", it's not totally boring. But this one was a real grabber.

And such a surprise! Who would think that descriptions about a place and an activity would be so great in just audio? But when you think about it, this would've been boring video. Moving pictures would not convey well the impressions of people entering a dark space with just a narrow bit of lighting -- and then going even without that for a bit. The edited audio realities were great, and you also included plenty of interview (or dialog) with experts.
