"Old", how appropriate: I was at a sparsely attended show this week and wondered why the audience skewed way older for jazz and improvised music

Morning all! Can't move...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am
Jeff Golick:

Hi, @doctorjazz! Glued to your chair again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am
Jeff Golick:

@fred: Yeah. Though these guys were young when recording "Old." I saw Steve Coleman & Five Elements at the Vanguard on Friday night - crowd was mixed but probably skewed old.

When I worked @ a CD store in SantaBarbara - I was impressed how well younger HipHop leaning coworkers knew their Jazz - but that's already a long time ago...I don;t know enuff about young people now to venture a guess into their relation to Jazz, but my conjecture is that short attention spans & dumbing down won the culture wars - for now...unless ever-better access to everything has done anything in the positive...

Bowie always had this fabulous tone and energy /humor in his playing and music. Was fun to see in the lab coat.

OK, looks really nice out there, time for Ozzie walk. Listening On The phone app.
There's a real house sound to this Nessa stuff, from listening for a short while...

I haven't seen to any live music since I left NYC, but most jazz/improv shows had a healthy mix of people of all ages (if 20-somethings count as being young-uns), but as opposed to other genres, more people w/ a preponderance of gray are more visible.... (I'm 41, and I have a dozen gray hairs, they first came in last year).

@doctorjazz: I'm indebted to Jeff again for introducing me to the good Air. Otherwise your statement would have been very puzzling
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am

There are a surprising number of bands named Air. (Or maybe not so surprising.)

To be fair, I'm being bigoted about the French Air: I so dislike where they're from that I never really listened attentively to their music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am
Jeff Golick:

Where are they from??
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:18am
doctorjazz:

This particular Air had great albums, mixed free music with traditional Jazz, and was fabulous live (I'd still go hear Threadgill any time, though he's obviously not a young fellow now. Was at an ASCAP tribute to him, others played his music, but he didn't play. He does still gig, though, I think

@melinda: very conservative and christian city. The small-mindedness teared up the mind of my best friend decades ago, because stuffing her with drugs was better than facing social embarrassment.
Avatar 10:37am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Trane-ish w/ some Ornette lines - kind of a Milesish band & arrangement? Today I learn the name 'Fred Anderson' & take another little pleasant step down the path of my leafy verdant ignorance in Jazz...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am
Jeff Golick:

Ooof that sounds rough, @fred.

Marsh was also on what some consider the 1st free jazz improvisation in the 40's, with Lennie Tristano
(from Wikipedia...

The quintet that recorded "Intuition" was formed of leader Tristano, tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh, alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, guitarist Billy Bauer, and bassist Arnold Fishkin. Most of the members of this band had played free improvisations together previously.[3] May 16, 1949 was their third day as a band recording for Capitol Records, and Tristano decided to record some freely improvised playing.[4])
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:51am

Was there a brief switch to the drummer bot or was a weird part of the track?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am
Jeff Golick:

@coelacanth∅! Hi there. Only Ericka knows for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am

(Bernice apparently had a much more calming effect.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am
Jeff Golick:

(Also, a Fred Anderson tune.)
  11:08am

I heard it as Roscoe's attempt to practice while enumerating to Ericka the various chores for the day: get the oil changed, buy cigarettes, pay bills, wash the windows, and so forth.

Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:12am
Brian in UK:

But Erica did not have a telephone. Oh the dilemma.

Jeff, just bought a replacement bread making machine and it is not even my birthday. Life in the fast lane!
  11:13am
Dean:

What's the difference between bread and replacement bread? A David Gates spinoff band?
  11:18am
Dean:

The word "saga" always reminds me of "Portnoy's Complaint."
Avatar 11:20am

Replacement bread is what Tommy Stinson has to afford such a large tourbus...but now we are far afield...
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:24am

This is in fact the second replacement bread making machine; possibly making the first one irreplaceable. Enough doughy talk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am

i need a replacement bread making machine...or a time machine -either one.
  11:26am

Is "replacement" a euphemism for "counterfeit"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am

I just need to make more bread.
  11:28am
